India!
Apparently Richard Gere kissed some Bollywood actress, Shilpa Shetty, during an AIDS awareness event and in doing so "transgressed all limits of vulgarity." That must have been on hell of a kiss. Even from the American standpoint it sounds like they violated each other on stage, with their tongues. And you thought America was bad.

I'm actually quite glad and grateful for this.

I was beginning to feel left out of the "All religions have fundies" camp, especially with that story about the Jewish fundies and mass transit in Israel a few days back.

Also: what a bunch of morons.

Did I mention he's a dick?

She's a Bollywood actress who went on celebrity big brother in England. For some reason that makes the western entertainment biz give a shit about her.

Don't we produce something like 95% of the world's pornography? :p There's limits to what you can air on the Big Three broadcast networks, but cable's pretty trashy here too.

You could be whipped or stoned for that in Saudi Arabia.

Fortunately, I have had some experience with the world outside of America, so I don't think America is so prudish compared to some places.

Truly? America is not a prudish nation but there are plenty of prudish conservative sleep in different beds and only have playtime on saturday evenings with the lights out and the kids at the neighbors types still out there, and in the US today you can basically make a huge outcry about anything as offensive or innoffensive as you like... especially when it involves celebreties. Look at the guy sewing for $65 million over a pair of pants.

Following local custom can be pretty difficult sometimes...especially when it means that, as a woman, you aren't supposed to drink or curse. And you are expected to hang out with the 'women' while the men do all these things.

It's why I won't move to Chile. I'll never give up drinking and cursing :D

Try moving to a country where women aren't supposed to work, and even if they do, they are supposed to ALWAYS be subservient to men in all things.

I think most of the world is prudish really. There are some exceptions such as many of the Middle and Northern European nations. But they are actually not the norm. I know they may think they are the norm but most of the world is actually fairly conservative.

Refer to "how many of those countries arn't Islamic governments" bonus for those not using Sharia law.

I don't have to go to an Islamic or Sharia country to see prudish, idiotic treatment of sex and women.

If you think that the majority of countries are less prudish about sex than America, or that somehow, most countries treat women better than they do in America, you're sadly misinformed.

He just kissed her on the cheek..well hugged her tight and kinda swept her off the feet..

I am not surprised by a few reactionaries picking this up and making this a big deal...in such a big population, there are always idiots of every kind and there are some who get into this...

Like I mentioned earlier, I am really surprised that a judge saw it fit to issue warrant against both of them. I hope this circus ends soon.

I find the term "prudish" a bit offensive actually and I think to classify cultures or women who choose to wear the Niqab and so on as such to be unfair and represent a misunderstanding of the society.

It's not offensive. It means that your culture's view of women and sexuality is backwards.

It's not unfair, and it's not a misunderstanding of the society.

I've been to a LOT of countries where women are forced to wear them, and have heard first hand from the men themselves what it means to them.

I don't believe for a single second that I am misunderstanding anything at all.

Every society is like that.

It is this pig-headed "Oh us Indians are not sexually wayward like westerners and so AIDS will not spread here" nonsense that had the authorities sleeping until it is now a very significant problem.

Porn industry, Bollywood "item songs", "red-light" brothel districts in all major urban centers, its all there....really....Indians getting all moral and prudish about sexual affairs pisses me off. For fucks sake, where did all the billion people come from ?

Even the Brits moved from Victorian era, while India is still stuck in it.

The irony here is that among the protesters, there were muslim groups too...hey there's a "common ground" there..

Cultures that coerce women to wear the veil most certainly are prudish. In fact, "prudish" is really putting it very lightly. From what I'm told, the Koran simply says "modest," not "the face must never be shown in public, and especially not the hair."

If you think it is okay to force women to hide their face and hair then I am glad if I offend you, because you deserve to be offended.
