And no, that's not a sci-fi geek's wet dream of a movie idea either. Hawking took a ride (http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/18334489/) on a zero-g jet and had a great time and may be in line to take a ride on Virgin Galactic's craft, which could potentially happen in 2009.

Good for him!

Considering his life; he deserves it.

If life was a comic book, Hawking would be an arch-villain, driven to terrible deeds because of his anger over his crippling disability. Instead of some gesture-controlled communications device, he'd shoot rockets and pilot some huge mecha of destruction.

You're forgetting, he could be Iron Man. then again, if we're talking about the Civil War series, that might be the same thing.

That must be an amazing experience. Someday, hopefully, we'll all be able to do the same thing, but it's cool that one of our greatest heroes of science is going to become part of the elite group that has pushed beyond the limits of Earth.

It's a shame that Carl Sagan isn't around...I could see him doing the same thing.

They could always dig him up and do it.

Hey, Gene Roddenberry was launched in to space post-mortem...of course, he was cremated and not a corpse, but that's besides the point.

Wonderful news. Stephen Hawking deserves to go into space, if anyone does.

Well, Hawking DID guest-star as himself on an episode of "Star Trek: The Next Generation."

As for Sagan...I agree.

Instead of some gesture-controlled communications device, he'd shoot rockets and pilot some huge mecha of destruction.Or he'd be the same, only a madder scientist trying to take over the world. Just imagine it; Hawking "laughing" maniacally as his evil plans are set in motion. Ha-ha-ha-ha-ha!
