What do you mean, "Irish elections"?

Like if Ireland is a democracy... Pfft! The real irish / celtic way it to choose the one that passes out last after drinking a barrel of whiskey to be the leader, isn't it? :p

They're voting for Parliament, not the president, I think.

Could you give us information on the parties? Maybe links to websites, or to information about them?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Political_parties_in_Ireland ;)

All I know off hand is:

Sinn Fein: Socialist/Irish Nationalist
Fine Gael (? sp): Liberal
Flannal Flail (? sp): Conservative, ruling party, almost continually in government.
Progressive Democrats: Economic Liberalism
Labour: Social Democratic, allied to the unions
Socialist: Socialist (duh)
Green: Green (duh)

I can't remember much detail off hand, but I do know that there hasn't been an election for 5 years, so the results should be quite interesting to see what Ireland has thought since then. The world's changed a lot.

Fine Gael = socially a bit more liberal than FF, economically more right wing than FF.

Haven't a clue to be honest. I'll probably vote on a local basis as opposed to national - but I won't be voting for the current government that's for sure.

Voting for Sinn Féin.. My goodness.. What next? I know Fianna Fáil should definitely not be in government but why would anyone want to put terrorists in government?

I think people both sides of the border have to move beyond that, otherwise, quite simply, there will never be peace in Northern Ireland, whether it be a part of the UK or the Republic. That should all be a part of the past now.

Fine Gaels lineage goes back to "terrorists". Fianna Fails lineage goes back to "terrorists". PDS legacy goes back to "terrorists". Nelson Mandela, were he to turn up running for some seat in Meath, would be tracable back to "terrorists".......

One man’s terrorist is another man’s strangely bearded, slightly intimidating, legally-restricted-from-having-his-voice-broadcast-until-relatively-recently freedom fighter.

On another note, what do you guys make of the latest developments in the NI parliament? Any real progress, you think?

The sight of Paisley near "the bearded one" is actually indicative of a massive shift towards "normalisation". Not that its going to be all cuddles and love, but every country has its tensions and divisions, and theres certainly still nay sayers on both sides. The days of organised widespread killing may well be gone forever though, or the forseeable future anyway.

Wow... I'm on the winning side right now. If the NSG chose the Irish Parliament, then Sinn Fein would win by a landslide.

Probably, but I imagine they're pretty small.

Sinn Fein, and depending on the amount of TDs and parties standing in that constituency, Green or Labour. It's quite an interesting election to watch.

Which constituency? Unless it's near the border, the don't have much support for national level.

I was assuming that the small parties can't stand in every constituency (including the one I would hypothetically be voting in), like in the UK.

Quite the opposite - anyone can stand (small or large parties, or even independents) where ever they wish to. They just decide would it be worth their while funding a candidate in an area with no traditional support. The Green Party have 44 candidates, Sinn Fein have about 47ish candidates standing nationwide. And they're deemed to be 'small'.

Actually, Independents are often seen as a good option as they break from the party hackery of mainstream politics and have become more and more important as a political force when a government is trying to be formed.

Unfortunately I have no idea who any of the candidates are :(

The panel election specials were fantastic, I was pretty amused that all the parties are promising the same stuff, more gardai, more hospital beds and so on. Though they need to stop having token women on it, they're rarely funny.
