Well, it's Anzac day tomorrow, a pretty important public holiday in Australia, and we all take it pretty seriously. Just created this thread for discussion and the like, I was actually going to go up to Turkey this year with my friends to attend the dawn service, but I put it off. Anyways just looking for discussion on this day and the history behind it.

I get paid double tomorrow! Yay! ;)

No, seriously, Anzac Day is something I have never understood and probably never will. It's part of growing up German, I suppose, that the idea of celebrating what soldiers do is pretty foreign to me.

Important in NZ too.

It's interesting that its importance and popularity as an observance has grown significantly here over the last decade... Dawn Parades get larger every year.

That's because Germany's never won a war.

How about the Thirty Years' War? Germans fought on both sides.. meaning some of them won. So at least some former German kingdoms won wars..

And, of course, there was the Franco-Prussian War, if that counts. It was a German victory, but only over the French.. so that might be a gray area.

The Seven Weeks' War is probably a better example.

That's because Germany's never won a war.Yeah, Germans only win wars once they've emigrated. *nods at France, the UK and probably the USA as well in some capacity*

But really, it's not the winning that matters, it's the talking part that counts. And Germany's really is a good team player, always willing to help get everyone involved, even if it means they're less likely to win. Good on Germany I say.

I will be going to Suton's Beach at Redcliffe and playing touch and having a barbie. I was thinking of heading down the coast to the Dawn service to watch Powderfinger play afterwards, but meh.

And the point of ANZAC Day is that it was the first war that Australia fought in as a nation after Federation. It's considered our baptism of fire, so as to speak. There are other reasons as well but.

ANZAC Day is a combination of many things. It is recognition of courage, a recognition of camaraderie, and an acknowledgement and celebration of all good things in the human spirit which war, though itself a barbaric anti-thesis of all that is good, brings to the fore.

It is our nation(as a nation, rather than a collection of states)'s baptism of fire. Our collective introduction to the world, in a theatre of conflict that all powers measured themselves by.

It may have been a loss, but, as much as any military action can be, it was a memorable one.

I will be having a gunfire breakfast tomorrow, an Australian Army tradition, at 0530. Two ANZAC biscuits, and a coffee with rum...

Anyone else going to join me?

We take all public holidays seriously in Australia. They are a very serious opportunity to maximise our drunkenness.

It's mandatory. In fact, NOT drinking on ANZAC Day is a crime punishable by forcible intoxication at the local RSL, followed by listening to veterans' war stories and bad cover bands.

Well, down here in New Zealand, we cannot have a drink until 1pm when everything opens.

Personally I love the fact that I have no lectures tomorrow and of course it is one of those patriotic days.

In saying that, it is a day to remember the New Zealand, Australian, British and French troops that were sacrificed at Gallipoli; the victims of complete incompetence.

I suppose it will also be thinking of a world that might have been - had we won Gallipoli, the Ottomans would have almost certainly been knocked out of the war; the Russians would have gotten supplies and Germany would have been crushed. France would not have been so badly damaged so the Treaty of Versailles would not have been as harsh. Since the Russians would not have starved, there would have been no October Revolution and maybe, just maybe, Communism would still be a tinpot theory. Also, since the Ottoman campaign would have been so short, there would have been no need for T. E. Lawrence to get involved and of course a reduced Palestinian problem as certain promises would have never been made. The British Empire would not have been so badly wounded, so there could very well have been two great powers today, the British Empire and the United States.

The world that might have been.

Well, actually, we won against Serbia not too long ago. And again against Afghanistan a little while later. :p

Germany's been getting pretty good at winning wars without having to do a whole lot recently. Though it might look like that's over for the time being.

Flag set alight at dawn parade, two arrested

Two protesters were arrested at the Anzac Day dawn parade in Wellington today after a New Zealand flag was set alight.

A man and woman are to appear in Wellington District Court today charged with obstructing a police officer and offensive behaviour respectively after the incident which marred the speech by former Secretary of State Graham Fortune.

A small group calling themselves Peace Action Wellington sounded a horn and a flag was set alight in the grounds of the Old Government Buildings.

Police quickly extinguished the flag and apprehended two people, including the man, who continued to shout: "Stop assaulting me. You're assaulting me."

The incident happened between two protest banners: "Conscientious objectors. The Real War Heroes", and "Lest we forget... Already Forgotten. Afghanistan, Solomon Islands, East Timor."

Wellington Senior Sergeant Hamish Milne told NZPA the obstruction related to the protester's refusal to give police the horn which the man was blowing to interrupt the service.

Peace Action Wellington Valerie Morse later issued a statement saying they were protesting about the message being given at Anzac Day.

"Anzac Day has ceased to be a day where we commit to `never again', and has instead become nothing less than a celebration of the New Zealand military and the glorification of war."

She said New Zealand troops were now serving around the world.

"Lest we forget that the military has, and always will, exist for the sole purpose of waging war."

Well it's simple, people fight and die to protect peopes freedom and the freedom of speech, that freedom of speech in turn is used to abuse those who gave that right.
Gosh it's beautiful.
