Segregation dies hard in the South...

A rural Georgia High School just held it's first integrated prom... ever. Linky (http://abcnews.go.com/US/story?id=3065077&page=1)
Seems they got around that whole pesky civil rights thing all these years by the students raising funds and holding an 'unofficial' prom for whites only (to be fair, the blacks did the same thing, but really, what choice did they have). This year they finally held an official school prom that all could attend.
And before you start trashing me for blaming it all on the whites, please note that a seperate, 'unofficial' whites only prom was still held a couple of weeks before the official school prom.
Funny thing, the blacks didn't feel that they needed to anymore...

How about you come on down to where I64 and 57 meet. Where drug dealers from chicago and st louis come to live. I'll show you the poverty of the area I lived, and how it was 90% black. For an town that has 12% blacks, to be in an area 90% black in the city, it constitutes as being a hood. I remember walking home from middle school, hearing gun shots now and again, having cops patrol the area nonstop. I remember seeing a black man on the side walk, with his pants down, doped out of his mind. It was because of my experience in living in that type of environment that I wanted to be in politics to change things so that people wouldn't have to live in such hell. It was because of living down there, that I also became a Christian. I saw the suffering and need for something more in people's lives, and I saw the hope for them and myself through the Message of Christ.
Segregation will live as long as there are black only colleges.
What Black only colleges? There are historically Black colleges and predominately Black colleges, but I haven't heard of black only.
Of course there might be some small private liberal arts colleges out there that receive no federal funding and can be segregated like that, but I get the feeling that's not what you're talking about.

Even if such colleges exist (and I don't believe they do) it is rather asinine to blame them for segregation.
Did you study history prior to 1970?
Are you aware that the country was legal segregated? That it remains de facto segregated in many areas? That in some parts of the country elementary and high schools are become increasing segregated again?
How is the is fault of black colleges?
Grow up. Read a little. Get some perspective.

And unHoly Smite, I hardly think that the many issues and problems of urban poverty and racial separation have any bearing on the fact that in the 21st century a small town was able to practice segregation reminiscent of half a century ago.

Because you don't live in one? Claiming you live in one doesn't mean you do.I lived in Oak Park, a predominently black neighborhood southeast of Sacramento, home of the 'forty acres project', a few blocks from the intersection of Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd and Broadway. Four people were shot to death in the immediate block where I lived in the year I lived there, mostly in the low income apartments that sat across the alley behind the converted house I rented a studio in. Despite all that I kind of liked it there. I didn't have any interaction with the drug dealers in the apartments, I wasn't stepping on anybodys toes and I stayed off the basketball courts near the Police Athletic League building. I smiled at my neighbors, made small talk and gave change to the frequenters of the food bank down the street. I planeted flowers in the front yard and flirted with the black girls who worked in the coffee shop on Broadway. I made myself part of the neighborhood and was accepted for it. I didn't act better or different or like I feared my neighbors. If you accept others they will accept you.

Well, as we have only a few hispanic families where I am from, its hard to see if they segregate themselves or not. But my point stand, if we want to integrate society, we should do so. In this case, pour tons of resources into the poor areas and you will see a sharp decrease in all the negative that we see and talk about. You know why they have gangs and cliques in the poor area? Its a battlefield in there. If you want to make a living, you have to off the competition, and surround yourself with like minded people. Watch the movie Ghost Writers.
Oh one last thing, Christ might not save us from being poor, but He will save us from despair. :)

Exactly! I was making this point in a thread a few months ago when someone mentioned East St. Louis. That place is known for one thing, and that is crime. White people always try to avoid it, cuz they fear getting mugged or shot or smething like that. However, anytime I goto St. Louis, I usually stop in E. Stl to get fuel or whatever. I go in, act normal, nod my head in a friendly way, and just be polite. Its like when you come across a snake(this isn't the best explanation, but oh well). Normally, if you act normal and walk away, it will be okay. But if you sit there and poke ate it, or act in a way that it deems dangerous, it will attack you. I am not saying that people from poor areas are reptiles, just saying its a similar nature. You don't do anything stupid, and you show respect, you will be ok. But when you act stupid and all that crap, you will see hostility.

Exactly. I live in a suburb that is seen as the arse end of south east Queensland. We apparently have a problem with our Islander population evolving into violent gangs and bashing people "for no reason". But when you mouth off to someone and accuse them of copulating with various family members, bad things are bound to happen. Especially when they are a 6"5', 90 kg Samoan with his large extended family behind him. Show some basic respect, and things will be fine.

Thats what I meant slick. You really need to learn to actaully post what you mean then, because what you posted was...Segregation will live as long as there are black only colleges
And then you posted Johnson C. Smith University as an example of one.
The term 'black only' means that it is just that, for blacks only.
Johnson C. Smith University is a traditionally black school but does not exclude other races from applying or from admission.
I don't think you will find any such college in the United States.

I once had my mother in law refuse to take the most direct route from their place (Apple and Maple Island, for anyone interested) to mine (in beautiful Downtown Bluffton) because it went through the 'drug area.' (Muskegon Heights, evidently, which is not the greatest neighborhood in the world.) She threw a tantrum, screaming and yelling, because she evidently thought that the black folk made a sport of harassing white folk in a minivan. What should have been a twenty minute drive took almost forty five, thanks to her. I loved my mother in law.

My mom now a days acts all strange. Its funny how making more money and being able to live in a bettere neighborhood changes someone. Ah, 'tis a lovely place. We drove through there the first time we went down to Cape Girardeau. Before we figured out that the Uni added about an hour to the drive so we wouldn't drive through 'the bad areas' around Cape. And that the old Cape bridge was the scariest drive I've ever had on a man-made structure. Crossing at St Louis makes a lot more sense when you're coming from MI.

L.A. is the least segregated of the top ten most populous cities in the U.S... if you want to see segregation, visit Chicago or New York first.
Our rapid population growth out here (L.A. went from 50,000 people to 3 million in 50 years) had people rushing in in a disorganized way, settling where they could rather than in ethnic neighborhoods. We have more gang violence per capita than other major cities, but we're more intermixed, ethnically.

Ahh! Facts! Alert the mods!
But seriously, I've had similar experiences. I can remember once in college, a friend and I stopped at a grocery store on the southeast side of Raleigh, NC (not the nice side of town, for those of you who don't know Raleigh.) I noticed that my friend was looking around nervously, but I couldn't figure out why. Finally I asked, "What's wrong?" And he answered: "Do you realize we're the only white people in this store?"
No, I hadn't noticed. Nor did I care. Nor did anyone else in the store; everyone else had been friendly to us, and I didn't feel the least bit threatened.
I now live in Durham, one of the most racially diverse cities in North Carolina. My nice middle-class neighborhood is fully integrated - about 50% white, 40% black, the rest Hispanic or Asian. I like it that way. But some of my friends - hell, some of my own family - say they would never live in a neighborhood like mine, because of all the crime. Crime? There's less crime in my neighborhood than in my dad's 90%-white neighborhood in Charlotte. But they assume that a neighborhood with so many blacks and hispanics must be crime-ridden. It isn't. Sure, we lock our doors at night - it's a city, after all. But if it was as bad as some of my friends think it is, I certainly wouldn't allow my son to grow up here.
Actually, the one place I've really felt uncomfortable was in an all-white trailer park east of Knightdale, NC. There were some guys with some serious anger management issues in that hell-hole. And they felt it was all the fault of blacks and of long-haired "libruls" like me. Go figure.
(BTW, the thread is now un-hijacked.) :D

Yeah, the trailer parks and white trash neighborhoods scare me as much as the back alley hoods.
Racists are all the same: stupid and violent.

And before you start trashing me for blaming it all on the whites, please note that a seperate, 'unofficial' whites only prom was still held a couple of weeks before the official school prom.
SO they worked towards a goal they wanted, worked for what they wanted, worked.
Funny thing, the blacks didn't feel that they needed to anymore...
So they finally got it for free so they didnt want to work anymore.
These are the jokes people, just kidding, just kidding.

I do not think that a high school prom should be segregated. I do not mind if there is a white's only or blacks only unofficial prom, but the school itself should have a prom for all the students that want to attend regardless of race. Our public institutions should be color blind.

I do not see anything harmful about black couples and white couples dancing in the same room. Call me a lefty bleeding heart if you will, but I just do not see the problem.

Uppity niggers.
Of course they didn't need to anymore...what they clearly wanted all along was to put their filthy hands on pure, white flesh.

Is there even such a thing as a pure white ?

I'm the wrong person to ask, being a mud person.
Aren't you part Cree? Wouldn't that make you...a clay person? Going on likely skin colors?
:D
Note: I'm brown, take it easy.
Hahaha, well, if you go with red clay and not grey clay...
But you know that the the kind of folk who call others 'mud people' don't have the ability to really distinguish between the non-white colours.

I think that would be me: Mostly Dutch, with English, Irish, and Norwegian mixed in for good measure. I am so white, I glow in the dark. I burn if I evenlook at the sun. My nieces and nephews, however, will be half white and half african. Nothing cuter than biracial babies.

It is interesting to note that it was the students who provided the initial impetus for a desegregated prom, not any adults.

Try going into those hoods and see what happens white boy.
I go into black neighborhoods often. Got friends there. I don't get hassled by the folks that live there. Also black universities do accept white people.

What is that supposed to mean? A pathetic attempt to justify segregation because teh blackz mess wit da whites in the hood?
Oh an my white friend goes to Morgan down south. You know, the black only school.
