Tan or Burn?

I burn, blister, shed and sometimes endure excrutiating pain, but ultimately end up with a nice golden bronze that lasts for a disturbingly long time.

And if I am swift, I steal the OP.

I do both. I'm Italian so I tan well, but I normally burn because I don't put any protection on.

Do you tan or burn or both, when exposed to sun for a prolonged amount of time?

I personally tan. Like I have only had one burn in my life, and that was on my left arm, from this weekend...But, it has already turned into a nice tan

I have fair skin plus I'm on 4 different acne meds, hence I burn. Very easily, no matter how often I reapply the sunscreen.

I got sunburn over the weekend, and am now a burnt Pancake. :(

I don't usually burn. But if I do burn, it's more often than not a tan by the morning. I tend to pick up a pretty dark tan in the summers - but I still look a little washed-out and colourless at the moment.

I go from light to burnt (think lobster after it's been boiled) VERY quickly. Usually it's my neck and arms that get it, but I've been real close to sun poisoning on my lower legs/calves before.

About 5 years ago during the summer, I went to the city pool 4 hours a day for 2 days a week and built up a nice tan. It's fading away slowly, but my forearm is still just as tan.

My personal best was when I was in Spain. I went to Costa del Sol (Coast of the Sun), and since I am fair skinned, in my infinite wisdom I decided not to apply any sunscreen over the 6 hour period I was there. Then I had such bad sunburn that I could not move the next day. The local pharmacy gave me painkillers in a dose I thought was regularly reserved for farm animals, and continuing my streak of wisdom I decided to go out drinking that night and I washed down the pills with sangrea.

And thats how I discovered liver toxicity.

I don't tan. I just burn. If I try to tan I wind up with a mild sunburn. If I stay outside too long I feel like a flaming Pancake. But it's weird. Even if I don't stay exposed long enough to get sunburned, I don't even tan.

the only time I did get a nice tan was when I was called in to answer the phone.

then I went out to put away the gardening tools... and came back in burned.

same here, I still have a tan on my arms from when I got a really bad burn on a boat 10+ years ago. :(

I am unbelievably pale though, so I wear like SPF 10,000 when I go out all the time now, I don't ever want to burn again.

(it's actually SPF 55 but still.....it's a lot, I wear it year round)

I get an uneven burn that turns into a tan if I'm lucky. Except on my face...I get a perpetual peeling nose burn in the summer if I am not vigilant with the sunblock every damn day, which is pretty much impossible. *sigh*

Funny thing is that I was just diagnosed with seasonal affective disorder, and my doctor told me that come next fall I should put on SPF 50 sunscreen and then lie in a tanning bed for an hour or so a couple times a week.

I tan remarkably well. Which is weird, because my mom is Norwegian (like, Grandma and Grandpa came over from Norway Norwegian) and my dad is Irish (like, in the way Americans are Irish...we have an Irish name and at some point (I think 4-5 generations) can be tracked back to Ireland...so, you know...only sort of...)

But the top of my dome burns like crazy, so I always wear a hat.

I burn. Fast.
1 hour of Irish sun is enough to give me blisters, in fact. It turns into a tan eventually, but considering that I like my skin pale, the tan is even worse than the burn to me.

Don't do wot I did, go to tenerife and buy factor 30, slop it on all over and stay on the beach all day. I stayed white as a sheet except for oyster sized bits down my side where the sun block missed! They turned to large scabs! Mind you, there was a Scotsman there and he was the only blue guy on the beach!

I don't burn or tan easily. Nor does my hair bleach easily.

I like the sun, but if I'm out in the sun for a long period I start getting inexplicable urges to scurry off and find some shade. I pretty much do as my body suggests as I think it's my body's way of saying 'you're about to start burning, bitach'.

Also, ever since I've been to Uzbekistan I've had a habit of keeping well hydrated, which I think stops your burning easily as well.

Usually I go a golden tan, but it's very possible for me to burn as well due to the fact that my skin can go extremely pale.

Not too weird - Scandinavians tend to tan well, especially if they're of a leptomorphic strand. It's usually West Europeans who don't tan too well.
