Do you swim?

In 2001, there were 79 fatal accidents and 721 non-fatal accidents for the more than 13 million licensed hunters in the United States. In contrast, the National Safety Council reports that recreational boating and bicycling account for 800 to 900 fatalities per year each, and swimming fatalities normally exceed 1,000 per year (often as high as 1500 per year).

Source: National Safety Council/National Center for Health Statistics reports from 1999 to the latest.

In 2004, there were 649 accidental firearm deaths nationally, including 63 among children (some of these were hunting accidents).

It looks to me like recreational boating, bicycling, and swimming account for, together, more than four times the accidental fatalities than firearms do.

Why aren't we marching on the legislature, demanding that the private ownership of boats be banned, that bicyclists be subject to mandatory training, qualification, and licensing, and that swimming be banned outright?

And 16,000 deliberate ones, wasn't it?

And I agree with Smunkee.

I believe the issue is intentional deaths caused by guns, rather than accidental ones.

We'll build large pumps and send it to the US Southwest, to fill in the Colorado River (which I hear is in need of more water).

Surely the swimmers would be the victims of the accident rather than being responsible for harming others? Not really a good analogy...

We are talking about accidents. Often, the victim of the firearm accident is the person who was holding the gun.

And, sometimes drowning people latch on to someone else, and drown not only themselves.

And, people drown trying to save the drowning.

So you felt the need to make two bad analogies to gun control threads instead of posting in one of the atleast three gun control threads on the front page of NSG?

but you forget the big picture...

all those activities, boating, biking, swimming... they're all forms of Excercise. 100% of all Pedestrians killed were out WALKING! so EXCERCISE KILLS PEOPLE!

infact, if you really want to get to the meat of the problem... Being BORN kills you. you start dying the moment you are born!
