It looks like CBS Evening News has never really recovered from the damage it took during the Rathergate scandal - it's still permanently in 3rd place and Couric hasn't made things any better (it would appear slightly worse over time).
Maybe not hiring a "real" journalist with "real" journalistic credentials didn't help after they lost their credibility as a news organization.
Maybe credibility is something when it comes to evening news.
