Bee shortages

This has been published before but the problem seems to be in Europe and Brazil as well.

I have noticed the shortage as well. My wife is a MAJOR gardener. Our yard is one of the best in the neighborhood. I mean to the point where cars stop and strangers compliment and or ask for advice.

We have many many flowers and in the past a great deal of bee activity. I ccounted 4 species and a couple wasps species.

This year I have finally seen all of them and the numbers are really low.

In the next couple of months will be the real show. If the numbers are still low......

So far the latest excuse is cell relays.

My conspiracy tin foil friends argue the chemical companies have screwed up and there is a cover up! :)

Yah, this is old news. (Colony Collapse Disease/Disorder/Whatever).

I've heard numerous theories about it: it might be a nicotine based pesticide from germany, it might be a certain type of mite &c.

The real question is whether or not it is going to hurt food crops in the US, which could be a very bad thing.

(For the record I favor yes to hurting food crops, and yes to the pesticide theory. I am aware that this has happened before however. Also, bees - at least as we know them as pollinators are not native to the US, so this could be normal).

I'm Brazilian and see no shortage of bees. They keep making it into my room (11th floor) at night and buzzing around the light bulb. And I'm in an urban area.

Hmmm. How much bee hive business do you guys have?

Much of the reported missing are profession bee keepers. I don't think they have looked into wild colonies.....

Well, as I said, urban area. The hive is likely in one of the (suburban) houses around. As for bee keeping, I think there are some farms around here, but not in the city, which has 2.5 million inhabitants.

Yah, see this is why I am for the german pesticide theory. Places like brazil that don't use it don't have CCD yet.

Apparently the nicotene doesn't kill the bees, it just fucks up their sense of direction or something.

Anyway, nothing will happen in the US about it. We'll have to use our logical skillz and shit and argue about it for years, then never come up with a definitive answer anyway.
