The one that's been popping up in my student essays a lot lately is "loose" for "lose." Honestly, how difficult is it to tell the difference between the two? And then there's their seeming inability to know when to use "then" instead of "than." I'm a college instructor, and I have to spend class time on this shit. Aaaaargh!

I confess.

I have spelled it "rediculous", the "Ri" never really looks right to me so I second guess myself.
I realize I could use spell check...but that always feels like cheating. I would simply rather be called on my mistake.

I will now never misspell(did I spell that wrong?) ridiculous again(for the record I typed "re" three times before I could make my hand spell it "ri").

For the record I would hope out of plain courtesy that one would correct another's spelling so that they might not continue with a mistake. I myself would appreciate it, were it to be done to me.

I can't even remember having seen that. Can't be that common, can it?

The one that's been popping up in my student essays a lot lately is "loose" for "lose." Honestly, how difficult is it to tell the difference between the two?The loose/lose thing is sorta difficult for many who speak English as a second language. Mainly because it's confusing compared to "choose". As in there not being any discernible rhyme or reason to why it's "to choose" but "to lose", made more difficult by the fact that the word "loose" actually does exist so it doesn't even look wrong to you. In fact, "to lose" and "losing" look much more wrong to my eye, because by rights they should be pronounced like the o in "nose".

See? It really is difficult.

It's all irrelevant anyway.... I read this and was all "Whaa? Don't tell me it's really "irrelevent"?!". So I looked it up and it wasn't. Thank God.

Why does spelling matter anyway? No matter which of the two ways its spelled it still gets the point across.
Up until tudor times or so there were no set spellings anyway, people jsut spelled things how they wanted to and the most common one steadily became the accepted spelling.
