See, years ago, I had this fun game on my computer, but unfortunately the computer just died (due to another game) and had to be wiped clean. And I can't remember the name of the game.

You play as a more or less typical hero out to rescue a princess from some trolls (I believe) in a dungeon/cavern system. Magic consists of runes that are combined to create various spells. The thing that really sticks in my mind is that there are a number of holy items, one of which is a taper (candle thingy.) Anybody have any idea what I'm talking about?

Umm...

Every computer RPG made before about 1990?

Unfortunately. If it helps, it has a sequel which involves portals to random other places, including one with a drunk guy under the influence of some far ranging evil.

It's been a while. I can't really be anymore specific.

Ultima Underworld. That was easy.

Yes! I knew there was an U in it somewheres, but I didn't say so, because that would be like...

Yeah, there's an U in it. That really narrows it down.

Thank you, and have a massive magical cookie.

(It's unicorn flavor. Hence the magic.)

Awesome! *devours cookie*

It's one of my favourite early RPGs. :) Actually, most of the Ultima series is good, particularly Ultima 7 (both parts).

Yeah. I remembered that I liked it, along with Masters of Orion. And a game called Dungeon Masters or something along those lines, except that that's the one that caused the computer to die completely.

I didn't like Dungeon Master much (I had the SNES version). MOO is one of my favourite games, though. :)

It didn't exactly sieze up. It refused to exit. Entirely. Including the old Windows Standby (turning off and on again, of course!)

Incidentally, now that I have the game, how do I get it to play?

You have a tendency to pluralize. The games in question are 'Master of Orion' and 'Dungeon Master', respectively. And let it be said, you must not have had a terribly good computer if Dungeon Master caused it to seize up...

True. Mac is great in many ways (please don't nuke me for saying that :p) but game-wise it just blows. Even emulating is a problem with most systems. Very frustrating. But someone said something about an snes version of this game? That's do-able on mac, I think.

Of course any other advice concerning good ps2-rpg's is MUCH MUCH welcome. I'm just reeaaaallly really, really disappointed in ffx. It burns me up. Flamin'!
