Major sewage spill in Edinburgh

Raw sewage is being pumped into the Firth of Forth at a rate of 1000 litres per second. Since Friday afternoon over 100 million litres of sewage have been pumped into the Firth of Forth. It's infrastructure described as "basically Third World technology".

This is another prime example of inadequacies of the Thames Water company and their cost cutting measures. In loses over 900 million litres of water a day through faulty pipes which, until July 2006, it had refused to repair - instead of reparing pipes, during droughts the company has requested hosepipe bans and a drought order. Though as of July 2006 the company was mandated by the government to spend £150 million on pipe repairs (less than half its annual profits).

Well, it being Thames Water, it was always going to happen. I remember them writing to my local paper to justify not fixing most of the pipes, but increasing prices anyway. It went along the lines of "we have to make a profit so our investors will give us more money. Then we'll fix your pipes and lower prices. Promise." I can just see his crossed fingers as he typed that out.

Unfortunately, they won't be taken to task over it, it'll be a piddly little fine that won't dent their coffers by much. Like poking a car with a ballpoint. That sort of dent.

Shame on them, methinks.

It's not like these sort of things have never happened with a nationalised water service.

I'm sure they did. I remember, my local paper (Swindon Advertiser) had a field day. And most of the letter-writers too.
