What's your favorite webcomic?

Ginnoria

I know there are really too many to make a fair poll, so I won't post one. Just say what your favorite is, or post the ones you read.

I'm a fan of the nerdy ones, like Penny Arcade, Ctrl-Alt-Del, and xkcd. Our school newspaper printed an xkcd comic in each edition; the author allows nonprofit groups to reprint it for free.

Well, the odds were definitely against them.

But I was holding out hope. Why so sure?

Because there are other gates. And it's more dramatic if they lose this particular battle. It will give a chance for the author to put some funky 'snarl' effects into the campaign world.

My guess, is that the city is destroyed, The Linear Order escapes, and the heroes retreat to lick their wounds.

The snarl thing is the story's major arc. I think the author will propel that arc, rather than end it here.

Yeah, but Xykon was defeated last time - the arc didn't end.

It's just as plausible, plot-wise, that he loses again and goes after the next gate.

Yeah, I suppose. It would also give the author a chance to relax the main story for a bit while he explores some of the other loose ends he left dangling.

I guess I'm just thinking the way that I would write it.

There's also the fact that if the city falls, Belkar won't have to spend a year in jail.

EDIT: However, even though Xykon was defeated last time, one of the gates was still destroyed, thus weakening the fabric of the universe. Isn't that the goal for them anyway? At least RedCloak's goal?

No, my understanding is that they want to control the gates, not destroy them.

Otherwise, why wait around in Xykon's first lair? They could have just pressed the self-destruct button, and avoided any worries about meddlesome adventurers.

See, this is where I'm thinking the author has been a little vague. My guess is that Xykon wants to control the gates, but Redcloak would rather see them destroyed (for religious reasons.) Or not. I was always under the impression that Redcloak had his own agenda.

*shrugs*

At any rate, the comic is awesome. It helps to be a gamer, but it's a well-written and plotted comic regardless.

well, it could be that they do suceed in saving the city and the gate. however, since the Paladins have that oath, Roy and party head out to check the other gates.

and Miko is not out yet. because now, she's technically NOT a paladin thus not oathbound in not checking on the other gates. it may be that her redemption trial would be to learn humility from Roy and co.

See, I can't see Hinjo letting Miko out for any sort of redemption, after she killed his uncle and Lord of the City. Plus, the party isn't going to want Belkar to spend a year in jail either.

I'm still waiting for Miko to play the blackgaurd role, so I can't really see her toting around with the other adventurers (who particularly hate her.)

A theory: Miko plays a big role, by helping to unleash the snarl, and become the Snarl's blackgaurd champion. Having been 'abandoned' by her gods, she will try to correct what she sees as a corrupt and immoral universe, by re-starting it. She will be propelled by Sabine, and Nale will try to use it to his advantage somehow.

I'm thinking we'll see the creature that's hiding under the umbrella during this battle too. Just a hunch. The joke's getting kinda old, so now would be a good time to throw that in there.

I don't see Miko as a blackguard. not unless she does a complete 180 in her values department. Miko as the key for the Snarl's release (or near release) is a possibility.

the thing about Paly's tho, is that they HAVE to put personal feelings aside for the greater good. So Hino may realise that the only one he can truly trust is Miko. after years of following the Paladin's code, she won't be able to shake that off quite so easily. A mark of Justice on her may be used to 'keep her in line' perhaps something like "she cannot directly cause any member of the Order's death"

and Miko may take Belkar's place as he has to spend a year in jail. ;)

Then again, Hino may remove/modify the mark due to Belkar's actions during the seige.

watch, eveyone's gonna find out that the monster under the Umbrella is a Halfling mage... much to everyone (including the monster's) surprise. :p

Well, if you take a look at the way the party started, it wasn't really about some great altruistic quest. It was about revenge on Roy's part, greed on Haley's part, etc. It's evolved into something bigger, but Belkar, homicidal as he is, is still part of the group. And he's funny as hell.

In RPG's, table-top at any rate, I almost always play good characters. But I love playing out evil NPCs when I DM. Too much fun.

Well, Roy wasn't really vengeful. He was being honorable - honoring his obligation to his father to kill an evil lich. And Haley wants the money to save her father.

It's evolved into something bigger, but Belkar, homicidal as he is, is still part of the group. And he's funny as hell.

He's funny, yes... but it's like eating too much sweets at once. I laugh, but I get a sick feeling inside. (Not really, I don't take it that seriously. But that's the principle.)

In RPG's, table-top at any rate, I almost always play good characters.

So do I.

But I love playing out evil NPCs when I DM. Too much fun.

But that's different... it's like writing evil characters when writing a novel. You make evil characters for the good guys to defeat, and you make them really evil to make the victory sweeter.

'Greed on Haley's part'? Haven't you been paying attention? Why does she want the gold?

My prediction, for what its worth - Miko intervenes in the current battle somehow through a selfless act of sacrifice and regains her Paladinhood as she dies. No point just making her a total prick for all her existence, is there?
Mikesburg

'Greed on Haley's part'? Haven't you been paying attention? Why does she want the gold?

That's not how the 'story' starts out though. We know now that this isn't Haley's motivation, but when the party gets together, they're a typical 'fight-the-bad-guys-for-xp-and-gold' party. Further development shows that the party is in for bigger things.

My prediction, for what its worth - Miko intervenes in the current battle somehow through a selfless act of sacrifice and regains her Paladinhood as she dies. No point just making her a total prick for all her existence, is there?

You're probably right, that she will gain redemption before the strip ends. I'm guessing she dons black before then though.
