What types of metal do you listen to? What's your favorite band? Also, how many of you play instruments/are in a band? Have any recommendations?

For me, it's definitely thrash metal. Haven't gotten a chance to go to a concert yet, but I plan on going what's I'm in college. Favorite band = Slayer, but I listen to Pantera, Carcass, Meshuggah, Sodom, Metallica (Kill 'Em All-Black Album), and Kreator.

I also just heard some Amon Amarth, Nile, Exhorder, and Artillery (and obviously a lot more, I have dozens of bands in iTunes) recently and am looking into getting more. Good stuff. I bet alot of people can tell I'm probably still a metal newbie. Been listening to it for several years now, but I was never a serious music fan of any genre...just recently started listening to more shit. Well worth it.:D

As for instruments, I ain't got musical talent so I never bothered trying though I did consider it when rock became sort of a fad amongst the guys I went to grammar school with.

For the longest time I was really into Viking/Folk Metal like Finntroll or Equilibrium, but lately I've gotten into some of the more Avantgarde and Progressive stuff. The top two bands I've been listening to for the past month or so have been Winds and Arcturus. Hellhammer has got to be the best thing to ever happen to metal.

I like Arch Enemy, and SlipKnot as well.

Mostly I find metal really boring, but I have a warm spot in my heart for Norwegian Black Metal.

Mostly I listen to hardcore, leaning mostly towards emo(Orchid, Usurp Synapse) , grindcore(Agoraphobic Nosebleed, Pig Destroyer), powerviolence(Charles Bronson, Combat Wounded Veteran) and crust(Iskra, His Hero Is Gone).

I listen to all forms of metal, except for some nu metal.
Metallica is my favorite metal band, with the Black Album being my favorite metal album.
I'm not in a band, but I'd love to be, though it would probably be a punk band.

Notable bands that haven't been mentioned yet: Napalm Death, Motorhead, Iron Maiden, Cradle of Filth, Dark Tranquillity, Cathedral, My Dying Bride, Candlemass, Pentagram, Saint Vitus, Morbid Angel, Death, Venom, Bathory, Extreme Noise Terror, Opeth, and Blind Guardian, for starters.

i don't really know what i listen to these days with metal... used to be a 'metalhead' but nowadays i listen mostly to blues and jazz, and stuff...

i still listen to Testament (melodic thrash) and Bolt Thrower (grindcore) a lot, as well as sepultura and occasionally some old favouries like Machine Head and Exodus, but for the most part i stick to those first two bands :)

I am an old-school metalhead. I generally listen to Metallica, Motley Crue, Ratt, Wasp, Etc.

Iron Maiden, After Forever, Nightwish, Epica, The Gathering, Avril Lavigne, Delain (drools), Dragonforce, Bruce Dickinson, and some random songs from various bands.

I listen to Metallica (nothing from the black album or newer), Megadeth, Slayer, Black Sabbath, Ozzy, Black Label Society, and Motorhead mostly.

Favorite band = Slayer

I'm not sure if i'd consider myself a metalhead, but metal makes up the majority of new bands I get into nowadays and I do get labelled as one a lot. I generally prefer slow and heavy - drone, doom, sludge and stoner metal (as i mentioned in another thread there's a huge overlap between those genres anyway.) But then I enjoy a lot of thrash and some black metal too (although a lot of black metal is unfortunately shit, there are several exceptions, and I tend to like those exceptions a *lot*).

My favourites: Kyuss, Electric Wizard, Fu Manchu, Pelican, Sleep, Melvins, Neurosis, Tool, Isis, Godflesh, Jesu, Slayer, Testament, Bethlehem, Black Sabbath, the Sword, Candlemass, St. Vitus, Solitude Aeturnus, Pentagram, SunnO))), Khanate, Boris, Earth, Emperor, Bathory, Esoteric, Eyehategod, Down, Crowbar, Grief, Mastodon, Queensryche....could go on, but i'll spare everyone the pain.

I don't enjoy much Death or Power metal. Again, a couple of exceptions though.

I'm a guitarist, and have been working on a doom/black metal project of sorts for ages, but i've hit a wall since I don't know any drummers interested in something like that.

Hehe. I had to go...could be the last time they tour here. Worth every cent though, they put on an awesome show. And Mastodon were supporting, which was cool. :D

Power, thrash, doom, heavy, zombiecore, metalcore.

I'm sort of a Metal Initiate, so what I listen to so far is:

Avenged Sevenfold (Metalcore)
Electric Wizard (Epic Stoner Doom Sludge)
Iron Maiden (Power)
Send More Paramedics (Thrash)
Sonata Arctica (Power)
System of a Down (Ummm...Heavy?)

Of these, probably Avenged Sevenfold or Electric Wizard are my favorite.

I like allsorts of metal but I absolutely adore power metal.

Bands I like.... Sonata Arctica, Iced Earth, Children of Bodom, Dimmu Borgir, Iron Maiden, Manowar, Motorhead, Slayer, Kyuss, Black Sabbath, Alice Cooper.

I used to play bass in a metal band (well...sort of metal. Think Rage Against The Machine mixed with Iron Maiden mixed with Pulp mixed with Dream Theater. Yeah...).

I like a lot of music, metal is my main one. I like almost every kind of metal. I'm not too fond of nu metal or grindcore. Among my favorite bands are Iron Maiden, Iced Earth, Stratovarius, Black Sabbath, Dio, and Death. (there are too many to list, I'm glad I stopped myself)

I play the guitar and would probably kill to be given the chance in a metal band.

Fool, Iron is quite clearly the greatest metal. That stuff kills stars, you don't get more hardcore than that.

Mainly prog metal. Bands like Dream Theater, Coheed and Cambria, Liquid Tension Experiment, etc.

I like most types of metal, though I tend to stick with my own favorites...

...Blind Guardian, Fear Factory, Arch Enemy, In Flames, Machine Head, Mudvayne, Iced Earth, System of a Down, Rammstein, Tool and Nine Inch Nails would be my recommendations.

(Actual "metal-ness" of said bands being completely subjective)

I'm pretty into Fear Factory, Type O Negative, and Rammstein, but I occasionally dabble in other bands, too. Especially the earlier Metallica albums.
