He's a perfect example of single-mindedness in action. He's the kind of guy for whom the saying "when all you have is a hammer, all problems look like nails" was coined. Fortunately, the video game industry is big enough and strong enough to be able to fight back, and enough people have now grown up with video games as an everyday pat of life that there's little chance of anything happening to the industry, no matter what these types of assholes try to do.

He thinks computers did it?! Computers are helping humanity more and more in innovating and building for the future. I second your claim that he is a dumbfuck. What gets me about this whole thing is that it is actually a case where the system really failed. The kid was adjudicated a danger to himself and others yet was tossed back into the community, then the Chair of the English department raised a great deal of concern over his mental health and was promptly ignored.

All this talk about video games, or the availability of firearms is just a silly sideshow, and comes in part, I think, from people who are trying to use this to push their own agenda.

Frankly, I am more worried by the fact that someone like this can be flagged by the 'system' twice and still nothing is done about it, more than any of these side issues.

I didn't say the game itself sucked, I just said that the controls suck dick, and they totally do. They're horribly unresponsive, even with sensitivity tweaking. The designers concentrated far too much on the graphics, so much so that the framerate is abysmal at best. MAYBE the third iteration won't have those problems, but how can we tell until it's finally released?

Metroid Prime, now that game had good targeting.

Metroid Prime had a crappy targeting though... it was a lock-on button and Goldeneye controls.... but Metroid is an adventure game so it's not about the combat.

The point was, the targeting worked almost flawlessly, and when you wanted to target manually, it was quite sensitive enough so that it wasn't frustrating. The lock-on function worked, because the Retro team coded a lot of variables into it.

Plus, the jumping mechanic was done perfectly. The camera panning/shaking really added depth to it.

Anyway, Thompson's type is rather typical of American celebrity, to be honest. He picks an idea, takes it to its irrational extremes then passionately and irrevocably devotes himself to it. And people lap it up.

Maybe that's something that needs to be looked at too.

I hate Jack Thompson just as much as everyone else, but I just read something that gave him a tiny, tiny bit of his credibility back; he rejected Hilary's bill to ban the sale of M rated games to minors as "completely unconstitutional". Well, at least that means he just a pest who's all talk. Hilary's the real problem here. Her and Lieberman.

My beef with Thompson is his complete refuse to engage in any real dialogue about the issue. His argument is basically him covering his ears and closing his eyes and yelling "Nyah nyah nyah games are evil and cause people to become murderous psychopaths nyah nyah nyah!"

Obviously in this case there's no reason to believe he was a gamer. But interestingly, I have talked to people that play stuff like GTA: several of them have told me (seperately) is that after they play they try not to drive because they've noticed that they become agressive, impatient, and a bit reckless on the road. Don't you think that if the rare person that had a violent disposition, major hatred issues, and had access to guns, the same type of thing might happen with one of these FPS games?

I'm not saying that the games would make people that aren't already seriously messed up do anything...jsut that they might provide immediate "inspiration" or impetus for those that are.

I TOTALLY agree. The media is sending us completely backwards- it's promoting racism and sexism at every turn, and I am totally sick of it.
