If at first you don't deceive...

In an attempt to be truthful with the American People the White House is thinking of claiming executive privilege over private emails sent by their staffers regarding the firing of 8 US attorneys. The problem is that these emails were originally sent over the RNC server to avoid transparency in the first place. The White House cannot legally claim executive privilege for emails sent (technically) by the RNC. It would be like Microsoft claiming rights to all emails sent by the execs as Google. I think it's kind of funny when you attempt to avoid being caught doing something and in doing so you sew the seeds for your own implication in an illegal act. See story below and add your thoughts.

22 current White House officials, including Karl Rove, deputy chief of staff and President Bush's top political advisor, have private e-mail accounts on RNC servers that are supposed to be used for political work. Democrats, in investigating the U.S. Attorney purge, as well as contacts between Bush administration officials and imprisoned former lobbyist Jack Abramoff and other incidents, found that some White House officials may be using the RNC accounts to avoid the Presidential Records Act, which requires the president and his top aides to retain records of all official actions.

The probe of the RNC accounts led to the further revelation that the White House may have lost as many as 5 million official e-mails thanks to a software malfunction, although the White House says is may be able to recover these messages and has told Democrats that it will consult them in appointing a forensic expert to handle the effort.

OOPSIE, we accidentally lost all of the emails related to information which might incriminate us. Our bad.

I'm shocked. SHOCKED that Karl Rove and the White House would engage in underhanded dealings and concealing their communications.

Seriously, did you know that Dubya transferred all of his gubernatorial papers to his daddy's presidential library? In direct violation of the Texas open records law. The State Historian, who seems a hell of a lady, filed suit. I haven't heard if there have been any results, but it does seem to set a precedent for this administration.

EDIT: w00t! 200 posts!

Jon Stewart had a good show the other day based almost entirely around this.

The most interesting part is that the passive American public allow stuff like this to go on and we say nary a word. If Nixon was the most secretive president up to this point, what does this say for Bush?

A multi-trillion dollar government can't afford to maintain their email servers without accidentally trashing it .. yeah right.

A roving Tyrannosaurus ate the server!

Was the use of the word 'rove' intentional?

I had a fantastic and slightly scary mental image of a T-Rex with Karl Roves' head rampaging through a server room, munching away on e-mails.

It would be great if Bush were finally impeached over this. Seriously, I don't care if he is officially impeached the hour before his term ends, I want to see that.

EXACTLY! I thought the Patriot Act would make us all stand up... nothing. Suspension of habeas corpus? Nothing. Detention and torture with no charges? Nothing. What the hell is it going to take?!
