In the show Leave it to Beaver (http://www.leaveittobeaver.org/) total square Wally Cleaver (http://www.leaveittobeaver.org/gang/gang_wally.htm) is best friends with complete rascal Eddie Haskell (http://www.leaveittobeaver.org/gang/gang_eddie.htm).

Why is this? What fuels this relationship? Does Wally live vicariously through Eddie? Secretly wish he could lead that life? Do the Cleavers represent the family that Eddie desires, and he holds Wally in contempt for that causing him to remain close to Wally for the contact with the family but also torture Wally for having the family that Eddie thinks he deserves? Does Wally hope to 'save' Eddie?

What goes on there? What do you think motivates thier friendship?

Or am I just stalling to do what needs doin'?

My guess is they grew up together, and have always been friends. Kids who befriend each other young don't really worry about what they have in common, they just play together because they live in the same neighbourhood. Growing up, sometimes those friends, even if they are complete assholes, remain your friends.

I have a friend that almost everyone has an instant dislike for. Hell, I think he's a complete ass at times too. But, we've been friends since I was 12. (That's 20 years now folks.) Some friendships don't die, even if they deserve to.

Wally is an all-day sucker, a perfect alibi and fresh set of prints, so to speak. He's that stamp of legitimacy that Eddie can't generate on his own despite his fawning to the adults.

now i havent watched leave it to beaver in more than 30 years but really...

wally hangs out with eddie because eddie is FUN. he is a bit of a rascal but never gets wally into too too much trouble. he has a slight edge and knows how to walk the line and avoid real punishment (jail)

hey! I used to have one of those. I met her in like 2nd grade and woke up about when I was 20 and was like "shit, I really hate her".....never could figure out why I didn't figure that out earlier.

All I can think of now is Eddy Wally.
