So what's your favorite breed of dog?

What with all the politics and current events and crap I figured people might like to discuss something that's simple and not too controversial.
Anyway, my favorite is the American Pit Bull Terrier. They're friendly to people. They're not too big or too small, and they're energetic and playful. Also not too tough to keep groomed.

Bloodhound. If I'm going to have a dog I want one that can find shit for me. I'll just have rags that smell like things I lose, like my keys or the remote or whatever.
Or a greyhound and a really long driveway that he could race down and beat my car home. I don't really know what my fascination is with animals that can run really fast...

It's something the breeders had done before we bought her. As a purebred, if she were to ever be a show dog, I guess the ears have to point. I don't know much about it as I've never had a purebred dog before and don't intend to put her in any shows.
Anyway, my favorite is the American Pit Bull Terrier. They're friendly to people. They're not too big or too small, and they're energetic and playful. Also not too tough to keep groomed.
I don't like friendly energetic dogs.

Mastiff
Both quiet, inobtrusive dogs.
I'm also going to mention the Icelandic Shepherd here, because most people have never heard of them and I think they're really cool dogs.

He was a great, friendly dog. The only thing was, my grandmother hated him. The reason was, he would always wait until she wasn't looking, then he would sniff her butt (in the process, he would goose her). My grandmother was the only person he did that to. Of course, it didn't help that my sisters and I would laugh every time he did that. :D

Yeah, I guess it's quite common here for many breeds. Her tail is bobbed as well. With Rex being a german shepard/rottweiler I was told we could have had his tail bobbed and his ears "fixed", but I like him the way he is. I don't see the point in such procedures.

Yeah. The tail cropping at least once made sense for some breeds that were used for hunting, but today it's just freaking cosmetic surgery. On your pet. That can have pretty side bad effects, too. Just because some twits think it looks better. How would they like it of one cut off their arms and ears? Grrr.

when I was about 13 I saved up to buy a Cocker Spaniel, I came and looked at them and picked mine out when they were first born (about a week old) the breeders called me about 3 days later saying that they were going to get his tail docked, and wanted to know if I wanted to come comfort him, now being 13 I had no clue what that meant, so I asked and she said just like it was nothing "oh, it means we are going to cut the end of his tail off"
I yelled at her "DO NOT CUT OFF ANYTHING ON MY DOG!" I think she thought I was insane.....and so did everyone else, but I got to educate a lot of people when they would see my dog, they would say "I never saw that breed with a tail" and I got to explain that they were born with tails and that evil people cut them off. ;)

My googling tonight told me that not only the procedure is banned here but also the showing of dogs with cropped ears and tails in dog shows, which is really the only way to actually stop it for good. Otherwise, breeders would just have it done in other countries to keep up with those ridiculous "aesthetic" standards.

Wiggle butts fits. Mina's tooshie gets shaking all over the place when she's happy. I feel bad watching her because I imagine a tail wagging where there is none.
Rex's tail when it's all fluffy isn't so bad, but when I shave him for the warm season's his tail is like a whip. He can seriously injure people when he gets excited.

After owning a Springer Spaniel(Think of a Cocker only a tad larger), the tail-bobbing is a Godsend if you use them for hunting. If you don't hock the tail, it will become horribly matted, full of burs, and just an all-out mess. If it's a family dog, however, it's not necessary.
That said, Springer Spaniel. Loyal, protective, playful, extremely family friendly(Altough not so much with other dogs-my old dog took over a year to get used to my Lab pup), and smart as a whip. Not to mention great hunting dogs.
If you've never owned a Springer, you honestly don't know the joy of owning a dog.
Labs are morons, Shepherds a hastle, ankle-biters(Anything you can easily hold in one hand) are annoying. Springers are the perfect dog for just about anyone. :D

Mutts. They're generally more intelligent and healthier than purebreds and a lot less expensive. Of course, if you're going for an ego trip you'll get a pedigreed dog - the most intelligent and healthiest of the purebreds would be Border Collies, Australian Shepherds, Queensland Heelers and Standard Poodles. Oh, and terriers, any breed of terrier - smart, courageous, loyal - I love terriers.

Other than that, maybe a rhodesian ridgeback - bull mastiff x (cause that's what my dog back in NZ is).
I really like Huskys, but would never own one - especially not here in HK.
I see people with them here, and it's so cruel. Poor things were not designed for 30+ Celsius and 90+% Humidity.
The local paper seller had one. Poor thing would just lie on the floor on the shop looking miserable. He never took it for walks either: A dog used to subzero temperatures and running 100km a day being forced to lie in a small shack with no ventilation and no air con all day.
Sadly, this isn't uncommon treatment of dogs here.
Having a Husky in HK should be considered animal cruelty.

Siberian Husky, hands down. Beautiful, playful, strong, and utterly, freakishly smart. Mine is, at least. She was housebroken, trained to sit/stay/lie down/catch/fetch/etc, all within a week. The housebreaking took a few days (really just one day), every other trick took about...ten minutes each, at most. One or two repetitions of commands to learn them, basically. Sometimes I think she's a person in a dog's skin, she learns so fast. As an added bonus, she never barks, even if I want her to, and is definitely the sweetest thing on four legs, period.
I've had dogs all my life, all of them good. Mutts are great, and most purebreeds are great too. I really have no preference, but for whatever reason, I one day decided I needed a husky, and it was easily the best decision I ever made about anything ever.
The second best purebreed, I would say, is the Shetland Sheepdog (sheltie). I had one for the first 15-16 years of my life, and she was just plain awesome, if a little barky at times.

Please don't judge all pit bulls by that incident. Originally pit bulls were bred to have no agression toward humans. They're fighting dogs, and you can't have a fighting dog that might attack it's handler or the guy in charge of breaking the fight up. Recently people who want a vicious dog have been breeding pit bulls to be agressive toward humans or just raising them with constant abuse so they'll become viscious. Real pit bulls raised by responsible owners still retain agression toward other animals, but have NO agression toward humans. For this reason they make shitty guard dogs, but great companions and therapy dogs.
What with all the politics and current events and crap I figured people might like to discuss something that's simple and not too controversial.

Oh, I know all of that. I'm an advocate for responsible pit ownership. But I can't bring myself to like the breed. Not now, not with the memory of grandma in the hospital with plates and screws in her leg so fresh. (She still has the hardware, btw. It probably won't ever come out.)
OK. I was worried that you were one of those people who believe all the hype about pit bulls. Sorry to hear about your grandmother.

I know what you mean. I know intellectually that there is nothing wrong with the breed, but I also know from experience that around here, they are breed and trained to attack. It's stupid not to be cautious around them here, there isn't a week that goes by that I don't hear about a child that has been attacked by one, and it's not the dog's fault, it's certainly the owners that abused it to that point.

Exactly. Tho I don't think the one that bit grandma was trained to fight, the owners just never bothered to socialize it properly - as in, teaching the dog that all humans are alpha - and I have the feeling that grandma tried to run away. Acting like prey is not the best idea, but she's terrified of big dogs. I love dogs, I'd love to have one, but grandma would never allow it, and I know how hard it is to raise them properly. I just wish... I just wish people would take the time do do so. Would have saved us the heartbreak of an injured family member (over Christmas, no less), would have saved the owner the agony of her dog being put down. Hell, it would have saved the owner from the Lawsuit from Hell we're sticking her with. :(

No, no, I've met and played with wonderful pits. I don't think I could now, maybe after awhile.
there's this really cool race called the Groenendael. It's a Belgian breed, they're big and black and shephard-like and smart (in dog terms at least).

I was bitten by a dog severly as a child - enough to develope a canophobia serious enogh that I once fled from a chiuaua... :(
I was able to overcome my fear in part to a mixed Black Labrador-Malamute.
Both breeds, and especially that particular mix, will have a special place in my heart forever.
Greyhounds have a special place as well. It was my uncle's Grehound that proved the final buster of my phobia - encountering a dog that was more afraid of me than I was of it was a revealing shock...

A larger, and more docile variant of the German Shepherd.
What with all the politics and current events and crap I figured people might like to discuss something that's simple and not too controversial.
Anyway, my favorite is the American Pit Bull Terrier. They're friendly to people. They're not too big or too small, and they're energetic and playful. Also not too tough to keep groomed.
Pomeranians and Beagles...so cute.
I've got a half-Pomeranian half-beagle. He's got the beagle ears, the Pomeranian mane-like fur around his neck, and adorable eyes, as well as this amazing bark that sounds exactly like a cross between the two.
We've also got an old Spitz/two others we've never been able to identify, and a Golden Retriever.
Golden Retriever
very smart, very affectionate.

Affectionate, yes, smart, no. Our Golden Retriever, while trained, is a complete and total dumbass(but a loveable one.) He's also afraid of the dark, thunder, and other loud noises.

Terriers are insane! Jack Russell's doubly so. If you haven't owned one, you should just hang out with one for a week or so.......if you have owned one and still like them?! you are probably too hyper for words.
I have a Yorkie who's too insane for words...she's afraid of almost nothing and is incredibly resilient over most things (she lost a tooth a year ago and simply licked her mouth and went about her business.) My wife and I have had her for almost two years, and she's not only hyper and fearless but beyond spoiled. She gets filet mignon-flavored treats practically on demand, and when she was a puppy, she ate an entire order of boneless chicken wings (my best friend from college once remarked that my dog ate better than he did.)
As a puppy, she once made a Rottweiler afraid of her. Yes, a 4-pound Yorkie puppy who couldn't even jump on the couch had a 120-pound Rottweiler shying away from her. And she just did the same thing to our new neighbors' Greyhound/Lab mix (oddly enough, both our dog and our neighbors' dog share a name - Lily. My wife named her. And I nicknamed her; thanks to me, she answers to Rugrat.)
Incidentally, we're cat people as well, and the Yorkie is a perfect angel compared to the demonically possessed Siamese cat.

Yorkies are the most sane of small terriers. I used to have a Carin Terrier, those dogs are mildly insane, he could jump straight up 4 feet in the air, no problem. He once tried to save the cat from a Doberman, and nearly won that fight...well, I mean I guess he did win, he sent the Doberman down the road yelping, but the cat still died :(
Jack Russel terriers are a whole breed apart from Yorkies though, they are like Yorkies on crack......I swear, I know a few, one of them ran around the yard top speed for 4 hours and then came in ready to play fetch....... too hyper. ;)

Because Golden Retrievers are the blonde bimbos of the dog world. That's not to say I don't like them -- the puppies are ridiculously cute, and they are tremendous gun dogs.
However, the herding group is where my favorites lie.
FAVORITE:
Briard (esp. black and uncropped ears...check out/Google the Friendly Briards UK site for pictures)
OTHER GREATS:
Bergamasco
Bearded Collie
Polish Lowland Sheepdog
Petite Basset Griffon Vendeen (PBGV)
Bouvier des Flandres
Picardy Shepherd (like in the move Because of Winn-Dixie)
Puli
Komondor

US breeders are really kinda fucktarded about ear and tail cropping. They crop Briard ears in the US, and it makes them look kinda silly. Ears-down Briards, however, are as adorable as dogs come, in my opinion.
People still crop pit bull ears. That's just stupid. Unless you're one of the assholes who fights his dogs there is no reason to. My dog still has it's full ears and it's cute. Crop the ears and pit bulls look more menacing which makes it more likely that the neighbors will have a problem with your dog.

Oh my God, and they already had it done before you even got her? :(
I was all stunned after your first post and googled it and turns out it's actually widely done in the US. It's been outlawed here since 1987! I thought it wasn't done anymore at all.

UK Briard site (http://www.briards.org.uk/portal/). Lots of cute pictures.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Briard -- includes a terrific description and correctly favors the natural ears to the increasingly illegal cropping.
Briards are sheep herders and sheep guards, and as such possess the characteristics of usually smaller herding dogs and usually larger guard dogs. I think they're the perfect size and temperament.

Buddy's tail is dangerous almost, he knocks things off the table with it, and once he got such a breeze going he blew paper off my couch.......I don't think he realizes how long his tail is.
Heh. It could be worse - my mother's family had an Irish setter when she was a kid, and they quickly learned the hard way that nothing even removely breakable could ever be kept anywhere near tail height.
On the bright side, their coffee tables were always well dusted. :p

Too much hair. I've already got furballs big enough to make about four cats running around the apt right now, because no matter how much we rake the cat out, there's more. More damn cat hair. More damn white cat hair... The Briards are awfully cute, tho.

If Yorkies are the most sane...I wonder what to make of other terriers. My mother-in-law raised Scottish terriers in high school (her HS mascot was the Scottie, so they were worth big money in her hometown.) She kept one as a pet; she notices how her Scottie behaves an awful lot like my Yorkie in a few ways - both animals are compulsive lickers, both bury treats, and both have a major case of big dog attitude. She noticed that her Scottie turned mean after her mother died, though...hopefully, nothing like that happens anytime soon and my Yorkie stays her pleasant, albeit somewhat insane, self.
I should mention that she and the Siamese cat are best friends, though he gave her an eye scratch that she didn't really seem to notice.

Indeed - dogs are wolves - Canis lupus familiaris is a subspecies of Canis lupus.
As for wolves being dogs, there are several species of wolves aside from Canis lupus.
And what wargs are is up for debate, seeing as they are being mythical and fictional. Put it seems unlikely they're Canis lupus familiaris. ;)
