Hey, could someone recommend me some Heavy Metal and punk rock-type bands?

...I was looking, but everything I found wasn't that great. Arguably, no punk rock except for them sounds good to me after I listened to the Dead Kennedys (Curse you and your chocolately goodness!)

Then we get to heavy metal.

I tried Nine Inch Nails. I expect deep sympathy from everyone for having been exposed to that.

Black Sabbath and Dio are great. Try Dio's first album, Holy Diver, and Sabbath's Heaven and Hell album. As well as the Paranoid album by Sabbath (Can't forget that!) Motorhead is also good if you don't mind vocals that sound like ground gravel. I like them, but honestly, Lemmy can't sing.

Holy crap...

I just found out that I've listened to stuff like the Dead Kennedys for so long that actual good singing sounds whiny...

Try these guys (http://www.myspace.com/thegrumpy) out. They have a song called Asstastic, how bad can they be?

And no I'm not in or involved with that band.

Napalm Death. "Order of the leech", ""words from the exit wound" "smear campaign" should get you started. Slayer, nearly anything by them..."God hates us all" being a particular favourite. Carcass, now defunct but "heartwork" is a classy album by any standard.......

Heavy Metal? Modern, or classic?
I'd give Black Sabbath's "Paranoid", Iron Maiden's "Powerslave", and/or Judas Priest's "Screaming for Vengeance"...
more modern stuff... I still kind-of like a Greek band called Firewind. Their "Forged by Fire" album is the only one I own, so I'm afraid it's the only one I can reccommend however.

All that said, heavy metal's not really my bag any more, as can be seen from my sig. If you're up for something a bit different, try something out fo that lot (though I don't think you'd be much up for such a drastic move as onto Joni Mitchell, neccessarily, straight from NIN. :p)

Enjoy, in any case.

Rage (standart heavy metal with great vocals): http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rage_%28band%29

I recomend Soundchaser and Unity.

Soilwork (alternative heavy metal): http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Soilwork

Figure Number Five is more standart, while Chainheart Machine is more alternative, but considered one of their best. I liked Figure Number Five more.

Velvet Revolver (pop heavy metal): http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Velvet_revolver

They only have one album, which is called Contraband.

And if you´re really interested in diferent stuff, The Gathering (trance+instrumental), Nocturnal Rites (hard heavy metal), Dream Theater (progressive), Liquid Tension Experiment (instrumental), Blind Guardian (epic heavy metal).

I'm more of a metal guy, but here are my two punk recommendations:

For classic punk, The Anti-Nowhere League. I Hate People is probably their best song.

For newer punk, Anal ****. Seriously - that's their name. AxCx goes out of their way to be offensive, and as such they're often quite funny.

Lemmy can sing. He just doesn't most of the time. But he puts up a decent vocal in tracks like Nightmare/The Dreamtime and 1916.

Oh, and I saw Dio performing with Black Sabbath earlier this month (Megadeth and Down opened). That was an amazing show.

Black Sabbath (first 8 albums, I fucking hate Dio), Slayer, Megadeth, Electric Wizard (Doom/Sludge metal, so it might be a bit slow for you), Mastodon, Ministry (Particularly the album Psalm 69: The Way to Succeed and the Way to Suck Eggs), Asesino, Brujeria, and Vader are my suggestions for Heavy Metal.

I don't really listen to punk...

Most of the suggestions that I've heard are good, with the exception of the atrocious Anal ****.

Anyways, for punk: The Gits, The Plasmatics, Bikini Kill, The Damned, The Crucifucks, The Dicks, Cryptic Slaughter, The Lunachicks, Butthole Surfers (except for Weird Revolution), and The Wipers should get you started.

For metal: Cradle of Filth, Dark Tranquillity, Fear Factory, Celtic Frost, Testament, Amon Amarth, and Venom should get you started there.
I left off slower doomy bands like Cathedral and Candlemass and slow industrial metal like Godflesh or Jesu, because I doubt they're your thing.

tool- unique music (kinda slow and soft most of the time but its well done) and good lyrics
metallica- nuff said
soad (system of a down)- the music is fairly good and the lyrics have an outraged activist ring to them (but some of the songs suxxor) (and most of the time they make 'joke' songs like this cocaine makes me feel like I'm on this song and ddevil that only make sense in the way that they don't make sense)

Iron Maiden is always a classic choice. You can have so much fun tracing bands that were influenced by them. Sonta Arctica, for example.
Pantera

Try a band called Kasabian, the track is Clubfoot. Very groovy.

Or Kyuss - Demon Cleaner

OR, for a very fucked up and strange band, try 'The Undoing of David Wright'. These guys are loons.

Symphony X.

Hooray for you.

I would recommend collecting the complete works of Iron Maiden. once you've gotten all that under your belt, you'll be ready to walk the path of the enlightened to the glorious land that is Power Metal.
To start off in power metal, I'd suggest listening to DragonForce. They're failry mainstream as power metal goes, and people who aren't familiar with the genre tend to get into them fairly easy. However, they really aren't that great a band. After that you can move on to such bands as:
Helloween
Grave Digger
Rage
Hammerfall
Rhapsody (of Fire)
Symphony X
Sonata Arctica
Stratovarius
Kamelot
Falconer
Dragonland
Edguy
Elvenking
Steel Attack
Angra
Vision Divine
and many others
