SF Bay Area NS Meet (planning)

Erastide

So... Actual planning for a NS meet in June or July. I'll post dates, people can select which ones they'd like. I'm only putting up Saturday/Sunday options, I assume most people would prefer such a thing for travel.

I took the liberty of tailoring the dates to fit my schedule, although I could start earlier, after the last July date I'll be going to Britain, and I have no plans to organize something I can't come to. :p

For location... I think general Bay Area is fair game. If you have a city you really want it to be in, try to suggest something close to some kind of transit line (train/BART).

:ninja:

I think Berkeley would be great....it's not as overwhelming as San Francisco can be, but has great parks and restaurants....not to mention UC Berkeley.

I live in the NW (near Seattle) Ginnoria. I asked if people wanted to meet up here before. We have a pub to do it at and everything. Not much interest came of it.

I believe Morgantana and Kinda sensible people live near Seattle too. Sorry if the names were a bit misspelled.

Holy crap, I was kinda kidding. Kick ass, though.

Of course I didn't read before posting, so I'll have to post something meaningful in the edit...

EDIT: Okay...dates don't matter to me since I'm free lance and never know when I'm going to work. I live in the middle of the water so everything works with me. I'd say meet on the island because of the parking, but there ain't shit to do out here unless you're a zombie.

Sorry bout the hijak, but to all the seattle people, I'm in vancouver, so that would be great. Any weekend after I'm done exams and i'd make a couple days of it and visit.

I'd think Vancouver would work better. That would put it close enough for Ladame and TC to come, and I would not have to try to get pot in America (assuming a post August timeframe).

Not so sorry about the hijack (does it often).

While I had a spot guaranteed at UBC, but the cost of housing is a deal breaker. So I have applied at SFU, in hopes to beat the odds and get in as I can easily drive their from where I am now.

I dont know when, but I will be in san francisco (well, oakland heights, witha million-dollar view of SF, the golden gate in profile, both sides of the bay bridge, and the san mateo...) at some point this summer, visiting relatives on my way to the People's Republic of China...

Hopefully this will coincide with whenever the get-together happens, there are certain forumites who I would buy a drink, or dinner, as it were...

Not so sure the Seattle to Vancouver is the easiest thing in the world. By car you can still get across the border with your birth certificate I think, but if people flew in they need a passport. And the car ride is lonnng.

I believe we are. You know what my van looks like, if you ride the bus you pass it probably coming on the island.

I think we might have to poke some NorCalers to know this is here. I can only think of three, four if one came back and I don't know what he's called now. I know that Callisdrun is from SF but goes to UC Santa Cruz. THE LOST PLANET lives in Sacramento, and as someone who grew up in Sacramento any chance to get the fuck out is welcome. Grainne ni somethin' or other lives in Reno, I think...I know that's like 4 hours but the Brits cover that distance to meet, don't they?

That's the NorCallers that I can think of. Gymoor lived in San Jose but I don't know if he has a nation anymore.

I grew up in Oakland. Given a proper vehicle and ideal road conditions, I can make it to my Mom's house in the Bay in approximately 3 hours (I likez to drive fastly:D ).

If all else fails, Greyhound could get me there in six.

Ah, driving fastly...I'm a big fan...unfortunately I drive VW vans...or fortunately...whichever.

If it was the other direction you could get one of those discount buses that give you chips at the end of the ride and everything...

Reno to SF is about 200 miles. You reckon that takes about 4 hours? From Leeds to London is similar distance and that only takes 2 hours by train... and remember, the UK is considered to have a pretty crappy train network within Europe.

Donner Pass isn't that bad, except when it's snowing. If it's truly bad they'll turn people back. Otherwise, it's just a nice, steep, windy road to help you get moving faster. Unless your coming up.

Also, besides the mountains, don't forget the USian speed limits. :p

Speed limits? Bah! Donate a little cash to the Sheriff's Association, get one of those little stickers and they leave you well alone. Just make sure it's not so faded that they figure out you haven't donated in a while.

USian traffic is the problem. Getting stuck behind truckers who have to crawl down the grade isn't the even worst of it. It's the toursists you have to watch for. They tend to forget how to drive coming down the mountain.

Yeah. I don't think I had my truck registered for about three years. We had the sticker right next to the tags, too. I've had cops behind me for several blocks that never pulled me over. Cops who got on my ass when I was racing along 580 and then just passed me up. Even one who pulled up behind us at a gas station, got out and said, "Like your bumper!"

Note: Never mix it with other stickers, like "Supergirl". I got pulled over three times that month.

Public transport? You expect such a thing to exist? The most we can hope here is within our cities to have good buses and mass transit. Amtrak is a joke.

Berkeley would probably be easier in terms of finding parking and mass transit at the same time. Getting out to Golden Gate is a bit long with BART then Muni.

It's four hours easily, and if you're not in an urban area, there is almost zero public transportation. Reno to SF involves driving over a sizable mountain range, and across the width of California.

I'd rather Berkeley or Oakland. I'll come down from Sacramento/Davis, and simply feel more comfortable in the East Bay, plus parking is the major issue and it is easier there than in SF.

Edit: I would also add that the South Bay might have some places to meet, and though the drive is longer I'd agree to that. Furthermore, I think if we all met out in the Marin Headlands we could take some cool photos.

I hate both the south and north bay for equally ridiculous reasons. Which is to say I'll go to both but I'll probably bitch a little.

Berkeley is cool because then I can take my vintage bus. Further and I have to take the boring van.

Not South or North bay for meeting locations. East bay and the City are more centrally located.

Though, I would dispute the statement that parking is easier in Berkeley than in San Francisco. Banana bread is good though.

The possibility of that will depend on when the meet is. If it's the 18th/19th, there's a distinct possibility I could find the time and an oven to make banana bread. :)

And parking isn't easier in Berkeley vs. the Sunset district, but transit to the Sunset... just a little bit longer for people quite likely to be traveling pretty far anyways.

That would be extremely ideal. I had been thinking of suggesting Jack London Square as a starting point at the very least in my overnight musings. UC Davis/Sacramento is under 2 hours drive (with good traffic) to the East Bay.

If you plan to fly, fly into Oakland. On Southwest or Alaska, Portland to Oakland $210 is the cheapest I could find. Portland to Sacramento, $138.

Well..

I have a wedding in June, so I'm not sure the earlier days would be possible (even though I voted for some of them.. damn my bad memory..). June 23-24 aren't going to happen.. Brother is going to a triathlon in Philly, so I thought I'd tag along for the few days. And I'm not sure my parents would want to go around July 4th..

Seeing as it would be a trip, with the intent of being a tourist, and not meeting up with you guys, I'd have to fit you in. So if it's held when I'm there, I'd try to sneek off for a while and meet up with you strangers that I don't know from anywhere but the internet.. I'm guessing the bay is where Fisherman's Warf is? Not guessing, hoping. Because that's the area I have my eye on (and there's a Hilton)(and because it's close to some things I want to see)..

I'm 80% positive we'll be going to SF this summer, just not sure when.

The Wharf would be pretty easy as a jumping off point to most of SF and the East Bay (Oakland). Take Muni down to BART, ride underneath the Bay and emerge near Jack London.

Not South or North bay for meeting locations. East bay and the City are more centrally located.

Though, I would dispute the statement that parking is easier in Berkeley than in San Francisco. Banana bread is good though.

If we are meeting in a seedy part of SF, parking will be fine. Though I'd argue that is because the chances are car will be waiting for us when we return is less than in the other places. ;)

Seriously, Berkeley has a nice campus and plenty of good places to eat that can please the pickiest amongst us all within modest walking distance of BART. It also has friendly locals who can point newbies to Telegraph or Shattuck (sp?) avenues.

The other thing San Franciscans need to consider is those of us coming from outside of the Bay Area will probably have a much shorter drive if we can avoid the Bay Bridge traffic. :( (And I'm not just saying this since the bridge caused me to donate $400 to the City of San Francisco -- when I would much rather have had that money go to Oakland.) ;)

End of the line for the capital corridor, train station is right there at JLS. There's a nice little restaraunt I know just around the corner too...

If it's the one I'm thinking of it's the place I found out that a brisket isn't a pastry. Yoshi's is at JLS as well, but the odds that the meet would end in all of us going to an albeit world class jazz club is wishful thinking on my part

If people are flying in and all that jazz (see what I did there?) and taking trains etc. I think JLS might be the best choice. Parking isn't free but it is abundant and there is a ton of stuff to do there. Well, if the stuff you want to do is eat...but anyway...Fisherman's Wharf on the weekend is t eh suck. And parking is even worse. But if you've never been to San Francisco it is pretty quintessential and you get to take a cable car there. And I know a dude who bartends at a place on Pier 39.

We can also car pool from Jack London Square to the USS Hornet in Alameda. But you bring up a very good point, for *non* Northern Californians San Francisco is a nice place to have been, and between Pier 39 and G.Square there are some general must see things.

As somebody making a fuss about having to go to San Francisco, if people really would rather sight-see San Francisco over Oakland, I'll still try and go. :) We could probably get a group shot in front of one of the cable cars that is waiting to be turned around and loaded up with people.

This is probably the part where I mention that I'm near phobic about being photographed.

Sight seeing is for Klydes...but I might be saying that because I've always lived near a tourist area in one way or another...

I'm easy. If it's SF I can take public transportation in and if it's in the East Bay I can take my baby...I mean my VW Bus...

Yeah! Alameda! Lol, it's so weird to have my relatively insignificant hometown mentioned.

We have some nice little parks, too. And the Hornet is pretty cool.

No mistake, I do love the Cal campus, it's quite beautiful, and I like Berkeley in general, just parking isn't a cinch there either. And it has T-shirt Orgy. And good record stores (note the things that I list as important, lol).

I might be able to make it out to the bay area this summer. My schedule is kind of up in the air at the moment, so I'm not sure when I will and won't be available.

Because I'm going to be in LA seeing Immortal in concert on the 15th and I'd prefer to do my driving the day before. Though I suppose I could drive down the day of.

What's wrong with Sacremento?

I would love to come if I could get the $$$ to go. SF/Oak is a pretty expensive place to stay. What about Atlanta? It's reasonable convention town.

I don't think we're planning to attract people outside the west coast for this one...

I can't reasonably see myself spending hundreds of dollars to fly somewhere to meet NS people anyways. Not unless I was already there on vacation. And sorry, but Atlanta is *not* high on my tourist list.

Well, we could do a lunchtime meeting, done before dinner, you go home and sleep, wake up early (1-2 am) drive through the night, get to LA early morningish...

Or just pull the full all nighter :p

Doubt it. I'll be the first person to admit that Atlanta sucks. Bad Traffic, so-so public transportation, & really nasty people. If someone decides to do a 2nd confrence, maybe Asheville NC? NYC would be ok execpt for the cost.

Last time I went to LA for a concert I think we left at 7:00 (AM).

I tend to go to bed at about 10pm and wake up 6-7ish, so I'd rather wake up early and drive than stay up late and drive. But if you want to leave and drive midday in July, that's your problem. :p

Huh.. what? Does someone need a ride? Or are you just soliciting my opinion on Sacramento?

Folsom does suck though, especially these days. Though it is a bit easier to access with the 'new' bridge and since they extended the light rail line out there.

Remind me, CToaN, someday I'll tell you the story of my stay in the 'old' Folsom jail.

Anyone want to carpool from Oregon/Washington? Oh please oh please. I hate driving by myself. I just can't justify spending that much on a plane ticket.

We can share gas $$. It's a great idea, especially since gas is set to hit $4/gal this summer.:(

I must warn you, there is a possibility that I'll be there..

Not actually there there, but I'll walk past you all, talk quite loud making subtle references to NSG, possibly hugging one of you at random, saying hello, then running off.

Or maybe I'll stay if one of you buys me booze.
