Millions killed in the Congo civil war.... not worth 30 seconds in the news.

Millions killed in Sudan... not worth 1 minute in the news...

Hundreds of thousands killed in Iraq.... "We don't keep a civilian body count."

33 dead at an American university.... OH MY GOD! SOUND THE FUCKING ALARM! MAKE SURE YOU TELL EVERYBODY THAT YOUR PRAYERS GO OUT TO THE FAMILIES! IT'S THE GREATEST DISASTER IN THE HISTORY OF THE GODDAMN WORLD!!!!!! IF YOU'RE NOT MORE INTERESTED IN THIS THAN ANYTHING ELSE IN THE WORLD, YOU'RE WITH THE TERRORISTS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Human nature. It's easier to relate to the Va Tech shooting. However, this is partly a media construct. So I halfway-agree with you.

A tragedy shouldn't depend on the death toll before we care about it.

Well I half agree with you in that the media is on it like a shark feeding frenzy, but I don't think it's inherent in human nature. It's certainly a trait that can be developed and promoted, though.

A tragedy shouldn't depend on the death toll before we care about it.
You're absolutely right. So why don't you see what you can do to help the Congo?

Why? Because it's politically insensitive? Because I feel the same way about 33 people at VT as George Bush feels about 2 million people in Sudan?

More accurately...

Millions killed in the Congo civil war...it's ongoing and not a shock.

Millions killed in Sudan...again, ongoing and no shock value. It's hard for people to get worked up about it.

Hundreds of thousands killed in Iraq...outrage, sure, but again, it more triggers debate than outrage.

33 dead at an American university...completely out of nowhere, targeting our own civilians who should, in theory, be safe. Even in Europe, China, or Japan, people don't look at the cases of the Congo or Sudan and say, "That could have been me or someone close to me." Few would say that about Iraq. However, what's to say that this was to happen at Virginia Tech? Why there? Why not, say, Purdue University, an engineering college with a Korean population? This Cho fellow could just as easily have gone there, and if he had, what's to say that my brother, a senior engineering major at Purdue, isn't caught in the crossfire? Or what's to say that some other school isn't caught up in that? It hits close to home. It could have happened at Purdue, or Texas A&M...or at a school in Britain. Well, maybe not in a place with little access to guns, but still...

If it were in the news it would be a shock, but then there'd be no room for the latest in Anna Nicole's eggs.

Because Americans don't care about Africans, more or less.

Hundreds of thousands killed in Iraq...outrage, sure, but again, it more triggers debate than outrage.
And it's much more deserved.

blah blah blah blah blah....It could have happened at Purdue, or Texas A&M...or at a school in Britain. Well, maybe not in a place with little access to guns, but still...

so its the "could have been me/mine" syndrome at work?

Yeah but 11 million people were killed in the Holocaust which is more than in the Congo so we shouldn't care about them at all. Numbers should determine compassion.

The holocaust was like... like.... 30 years ago or something. Don't you watch television?

Pffff are you freakin' serious? this is not trolling. The man has a legitimate point, and I happen to agree with it. Same with Sept. 11. 24,000 people dying every day of hunger, and 3,000 gets all the news? it's just math, people! the only way you could be more upset about september 11th is if you are claiming a white life is worth 8 poor black children. You wouldn't be saying that, would you?

I don't remember the exact exchange rate but I think it's something like 7.2 Blacks for 1 white. I could be wrong.

Why should I spend my time caring about people dying from hunger when thousands more were killed in X-TRAGEDY-HERE.

In fact, the only tragedy people should spend anyy time whatsoever talking about is the one with the most deaths. All others can FUCK OFF. It's math, people!

The holocaust was like... like.... 30 years ago or something. Don't you watch television?

You're a smart cookie. 1977 was when the Holocaust ended. But now that it's over we should suddenly forget about them? YOU'RE UNCOMPASSIONATE!!!!

Are you stupid enough to think only white people died on 9/11? Seems so. Shoo troll.

Yes, I am sure that's what he was saying.

And I am half black.

And thus, you know everything about Manhattan's racial demographics. Being half-black makes you an expert on anything that could potentially involve both Black AND white people. You sure got the luck of the draw. Bastard.

I had a similar reaction to 9/11 when it happened. (And to this day.)

It's amazing what kinds of names I got called as a result.

Is "eww troll" the new "there is no...", or what? I remember when we used to call people trolls when they were. Be careful - you'll make it lose a lot of its potency if you misuse it. Now, of course I don't believe it was only whites who died... however, whatever their skin colour was, they certainly weren't the one thing that matters; poor. The only class difference that matters is that of money - it's not so much that the rich people of the world hate black people. It's that the poor people have nothing to offer. So, in summary: A.) I would say it was predominantly white people, yes. B.)As stated above, they certainly weren't poor (at least in the way the rest of the world is), so feel free to restate my original post like so: "The only way you could be more upset about september 11th is if you are claiming a rich life is worth 8 poor children."
.And, C.)I have no idea you felt it necessary to inform me of your ethnicity; I do not care either way.I probably missed something I intended to say, but, meh.

I'd like to commend the OP for opening my eyes.

You see, compassion is a numbers-based game. As soon as one tragedy shifts to the most deadly, I throw my complete devotion and sympathy to that one. Sure, it may seem like I'm not really a sympathetic character that I purport to be, but it's all mathematics, people. By showing complete viciousness towards those who died in a lesser massacre, I've shown that I am in fact a very caring and compassionate human being. Now I know how I should react to a friend's death: I shouldn't care -- after all, it's only one person? Do you realize how many people die every day? I wish you sheeple would wake up and smell the coffee and take a lesson from compassionate guys like us.

Exactly. I'm not even being sarcastic. That's exactly what I was tring to say.

My thoughts on this thread: they're all tragedies. Get off your computer chair and do something rather than railing at those mourning their family/friends/countrymen.
