The Fairy of Awesome Occurences has arrived, and you have been granted a one week vacation to one of two destinations!!!

Do you spend the week in a major metropolitan area, seeing the sights, shopping, being touristy, etc?

Or do you spend the week in a national park, hiking, camping, being outdoorsy, etc?

**If you live in a major metropolitan area, assume that you must travel to a different major metropolitan area that you have NOT been to before.**

I'd spend the week in Rome.

it depends on where and with who and when, and if i'd have to pay for the stuff i do there.
when the weather is fine and i can go with some friends and we can bring shitloads of alcohol i think i'd go to the park. because camping is fun and rather inexpensive.
but going to a metropolitan area seems fun too, going to musea at day, going to clubs at night. but it's quite expensive.

damn, i doubt way to much, i should become more impulsive.

Where is the tropical/mediterranean beach option?

Out of those two, I'd say the park, depending on the accommodation conditions. I'm not a fan of big cities.

There are national parks that consist of tropical beaches...

There are national parks that consist of glaciers...

...it's wide open.

I'd spend the week in Rome.

Florence is better. ;)

Nothing...

...I'm sure you can find a beach a little closer to home. ;)

Well seeing as there's two state parks that are only a very short drive away from where I live, I'll take the week in a city. Center City Philadelphia, of course.

I'd spend the week in Rome.

Rome's my favourite place that I've been to.

I'm not one for sitting on a beach as I get bored and I'm not into sunbathing. I like th history/culture etc that places like Rome has to offer. I have to see and do stuff. I'd like to check out Athens next.

A national park might be cool. I'd like to go snake hunting! (Not literally hunting but you know what I mean....or not.)

City FTW though.

Depends on a lot of things. Probably the city though. Trouble is, I love both cities and parks. Really a difficult decision. Can't I go to the city for like...four days, and then chill in a national park for a weekend or so?

I voted for the city, for the simple reason that I currently live out in the countryside. I've got a perfectly good forest to hike in right behind my house. :)

It's cliche, but I'd have to choose metropolitan. I have to go to Rome at least once. Been intrigued by it for too long.

I went to Rome for three days, and then Florence for two...Florence is better.

Cheaper, less polluted, less touristy, fewer pickpockets and sidewalk scam artists.

Plus there's plenty to see there in terms of history and culture...The Duomo, the Ponte Vecchio, the Basilica di San Lorenzo. Great museums like the Uffizi, the Bargello, and the Accademia

...plus they have some of the best gelatto in all of Italy. :)

National Park all the way! Why on Earth would anyone want to travel to a city when if they could help it?! Cities are absolutely discusting! Their loud, smelly, and completely over crowded! I'd rather be outdoors in the middle of nowhere with a few close friends, hell, or even by myself, than in an overcrowed city.

Come to HK, you get both worlds in one and you're only 20 minutes away from the beach to boot!

The weather is awesome today - I'll try post a photo on photobucket

I voted city, but I am having second thoughts. Does the National Park vacation include a source of alcohol?

Wouldn't that be enough for a week hiking? ;)
If not, bring some friends along and pool your money for more booze!

I don't know... I like cities, but I've already been in all major metro areas of western EU, so I'd have to plan a trip to somewhere else. I think that Sankt Petersburg could be a good idea - the Hermitage, Carskoe Zelo, the Winter Palace, Krejzer Avrora etc - and it's only 2 hours of airplane away. (I wouldn't waste 2 days out of a week to fly to another continent - if I were to go to another continent, I would allow myself at least one month).

I could also use a week in the mountains, maybe in Südtirol or Vallee d'Aoste.

The park, but only IF I get to stay in a proper motel. "Roughing it" (camping, or staying in some no-amenities cabin) is not my idea of a vacation. On a vacation, I want room service and maid service. If I'm not going to get that, I might as well stay home.

As for what I'd do? I'll be in the pool. Either that, or driving around to see the area. Big cities suck to drive in, which is one of the reasons I'd take the park. And not a busy park, either, but one where I can actually drive for a while without either someone in my way, or someone else trying to drive through my trunk.

Is there any spending money in the Fairy's offer? If so, I'll go where there's shops and shows to blow the dough on. If not ... sleeping in a dumpster in a major metro area sounds less than attractive, and I'll take my chances with the snakes and spiders.

No, bugger it. I take vacations whenever I choose, and history shows that I choose neither a national park nor the bright lights. I potter around the house. You gotta sweeten that Occurence with a bit more Awesomeness, you cheapskate fairy!

You still haven't told me what you meant. Now I have to assume, which, you know, often makes...

In case you meant that people would be hostile or at least unfriendly to you because of your American accent: uh....no. Individual Americans are still very much liked here (plus they talk funny :p). People you just ask for the way on the street, or waitresses in cafés, or whatever will be just as likely to ask you where you're from and then be all excited and interested when you name some American city or state as they were before. Unless you're a grandstanding asshole that manages to alienate everybody in the first two seconds, of course, but that's independent of being American or not.

It gets more problematic when the conversations get deeper. If you ever end up at a night out with Germans as an American you'll very likely be asked about politics. As long as you're not pro-Bush, pro-guns, pro-war, or a fundamentalist Christian you should be fine. :p

I could go for either. I enjoy both types. It would entirely depend on where i'm given the option to go to, though.
