The Greatest Driving Song of all Time
Philosopy

The Chain, by Fleetwood Mac (the old BBC F1 theme tune), came on the radio earlier this evening. It was a beautiful, clear night and the road was empty; a great song for the car.
I suddenly realised that I was doing speeds that, had I been caught, would have meant waving goodbye to my licence. Some songs just do that to you; turn the radio up, listen to the beat...and unconsciously whack the peddle to the metal.
I would put forward this song as one of the greatest driving songs of all time. I would also submit Bruce Springsteen's Born to Run. Any other nominations?

This has come up about a million times at work. (I work for a trucking company.)
My top three 'road songs' (only for the road mind you) are;
1st - Boston - More Than a Feeling.
2nd - Whitesnake - Here I Go Again
3rd - Trooper - Here For a Good Time, Not a Long Time
Something about those tunes makes me want to crank them up when I'm driving.
*waits for the inevitable 'boos' and 'hisses'*

You're missing out. A good song can make a great drive.
I suspect Jello does more city driving than I do.
Driving is one of the best times to listen to music. If I'm doing the 14 hour run from Vancouver to Edmonton, I need something else going on to keep me sane. I prefer louder, more energetic music. Some of my favourites:
Radar Love by Golden Earring
In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida by Iron Butterfly
Holy Wars by Megadeth
Larks' Tongues in Aspic by King Crimson
Plus anything by Judas Priest or Iron Maiden, or anything recorded by the Scorpions before 1979. If it's raining I'll switch to the slightly mellower Uriah Heep, Rush, or even Fleetwood Mac.

Actually, Whitesnake makes for excellent driving music, though I'm more partial to their earlier work (which does include Here I Go Again, just not the version most people know).

I didn't picture you as a metal fan. But, we're about the same age, so I suppose that fits. *shrugs* (meaning, I think most of us were into metal at one time or another.)
I based my list off of songs you're more likely to hear on the radio, wherever you may be driving. (Most areas will have some sort of classic rock station, or mix of classic rock and modern rock.) I tend to keep 90's alt rock music in the car.

Radar Love is quintessential road music. You almost have to take it as a given for the discussion, like, "What, aside from Radar Love makes good road music.
Arlo Guthrie's "Alice's Restaurant Massacre Revisited" is exactly long enough to get me door to door from home to my job. :D
In the what felt like a minute and a half I had a stereo in my unlockable red and white microbus complete with shovels rakes and implements of de-struction I loved playing that song in it.
Some great recommendations.
I'll add:
Runnin' Down a Dream - Tom Petty
Burnin' For You - Blue Oyster Cult
Long Train Runnin' - The Doobie Brothers
Life In The Fast Lane - The Eagles
Free Ride - The Edgar Winter Group
Fool For The City - Foghat
Truckin' - The Grateful Dead
No Time - The Guess Who

Born To Be Wild - Steppenwolf
Runnin' Down a Dream - Tom Petty
Jump - Van Halen
Eminence Front - The Who
Owner of a Lonely Heart - Yes
You mentioned Running Down a Dream twice.
I find that to be appropriate.
I'll add Brujo by Screamin' Jay Hawkins. Screamin' Jay makes for good road music no matter what, but I dig that one lots.
There are some Medeski, Martin, and Wood pieces that are pretty good.
Soul Caddilac and Irish Whiskey by the Cherry Poppin' Daddies...Oh, and Hazel, South Dakota, Stay, Don't Just Stay, and End of the Night
The Theme to Peter Gunn for all those Spy Hunter fans...
Gemini Rising, Voodoo, Remember When, When I'm Walking, Who Took the Happiness Out?, Lickity Split, and Santa Cruz by The Dirty Dozen Brass Band. Again, anything by them really.
Season of the Witch by Donovan
Voodoo Chile by the Gil Evans Orchestra. And by Hendrix, too.
I Won't Back Down Johnny Cash and Tom Petty
I should stop now.
I spend a lot of time on the road...
I know most of the song listed here in this thread; all excellent choices. I can't believe that nobody has suggested "Autobahn" by Kraftwerk. This is a song about driving and has some syntho sound fx that emulate highway sounds. It is quite long and you can enjoy it quite nicely on the drive.

Red Barchetta by Rush, no contest.
Well, I'm not about to claim that these are the BEST songs for driving, but they're what I pop in when I want some good driving tunes...
"Majesty" - Blind Guardian
"Self Bias Resistor" - Fear Factory
"Immune" - Godsmack
"Behind Space '99" - In Flames
"Davidian" - Machine Head
"Not Falling" - Mudvayne
"Wish" - Nine Inch Nails
"They Know Who You Are" - Powerman 5000
"Their Law" - Prodigy
"Zwitter" - Rammstein
"Shine" - Sevendust
"Falls Apart" - Stabbing Westward
"P.L.U.C.K." - System of a Down
"46 & 2" - Tool

Heh. Runnin' Down A Dream was the first song that came to mind. Then, I went down my list of favourite songs for which ones I like to drive to. At they point, they were all in alphabetical order (at least iTunes version of alphabetical), so I wanted to cut and paste it into the right spot. Apparently I hit copy instead...

You must concede that there are more moods than just the pedal-to-the-floor driving rage. That said, however, here are some road ragers:
"Mars, the Bringer of War" from The Planets -- Gustav Holst
"Fortuna Imperatrix Mundi" from Carmina Burana -- Carl Orff
"Out of the Business" from Outside Inside -- The Tubes
"Movie Star" from Kerosene Hat -- Cracker
"Tank!" from Cowboy Bebop Original Soundtrack -- Yoko Kanno and Seatbelts
"Thunderpig" and "Burn" from Albino -- Super Sonic Soul Pimps
"Hyperactive" from The Flat Earth -- Thomas Dolby
"Come Out and Play" from Smash -- The Offspring (actually got a ticket while listening to them...)
"I Wanna Be Sedated" -- The Ramones
"'Til the Money Runs Out" -- Men at Work
"Vibrator" from Vibrator -- Terence Trent d'Arby
"Can't Turn You Loose" -- Otis Redding
"Armageddon" from The Gate of the Mind's Eye -- Thomas Dolby
"What is Hip?" -- Tower of Power
"Johnny Q" from Law and Order -- Crazy 8s
But sometimes you'd rather cruise than careen. Perhaps a separate thread for different auto moods?
Deftones Feat. Maynard James Keenan - Passenger.
End of thread, as far as I'm concerned.

"Tank!" from Cowboy Bebop Original Soundtrack -- Yoko Kanno and Seatbelts
Since some one brought up Yoko Kanno and the Seatbelts I also suggest from them "Rush," "Piano Black," "Yo Pumpkin Head," "Bad Dog No Biscuit."
And add "I Wanna Be Sedated" to my list, forgot it.
"Spokey Dorkey" and "The Egg and You" for just plain good music.

I just put in songs that were for different driving moods. I didn't label them though because no one ever knows who I'm talking about in these threads. I guess I just don't listen to enough (or any) metal for this crowd.
Kudos on being the first one to mention classical pieces. I thought about including Different Trains by Reich, but that's more of a song for riding trains...obviously.
Gorillaz - 19-2000 (Soulchild)
You know, as generic and "obviously the only song by them I know" and "Blah blah blah overplayed" it is, I'd say that Clint Eastwood is a good cruising song.

There is one and only one great driving song, and that is Born to be Wild by Steppenwolf. I can only assume that since it's barely been mentioned in this thread, most of you decided that it was so obviously king of driving songs that it didn't even need mentioning, and thus turned this into a "best driving song other than Born to be Wild thread". I must say that many of the runners up mentioned so far are quite good. I wouldn't have thought of I Want to Break Free as a driving song, but I guess it works.
Oh, and for my own runner up, I would like to nominate Clap for the Wolfman by the Guess Who. Not a really famous song, but it has great energy. The Beach Boys also had some good driving tunes.
My personal favorites on the road are:
AC DC-Highway to Hell
The Who- Going Mobile

Just about all the songs I've seen posted are great songs for driving, depending on what type of driving your doing. Lets face it, the same song that lends itself to flying down the highway doesn't always work for cruising down the Bulevard or a leisurely drive in the country.
But if jamming down the highway at speeds that probably won't be looked upon favorably by your local highway patrol is what you want to do, Bob Seger's 'Get Out of Denver' can't be beat as a soundtrack for that activity.

For summer driving in the city: Anything from Cake's Fashion Nugget, played loud (this goes without saying, of course, seeing how all good driving songs have to be played loud.
All year round: The Ground beneath Her Feet by U2 with requisite turning-up-the-volume at that one point in the song, you know which one. Same with El Tango de Roxanne from the Moulin Rouge soundtrack.
Other albums I listen to a lot in the car are Live's Throwing Copper and the Stereophonics' Word Gets Around.
The litmus test for any good driving song: it has to have a turning-up-the-volume moment or I have to at least be able to sing out loud to it. :p
