Porno!!!

So I've been in a rather involved discussion of pornography recently, and thought I'd hash out my opinions on NSG.

1: The idea that pornography is exploitive to women stems from the idea that women are being taken advantage of, which implies that they are somehow not mature enough to make their own decisions about sex. Children are exploited. The poor are exploited. Women who choose, for whatever reason, to work in pornography are not exploited (except, of course, in third world countries, organized crime, or whatever where they don't really have a choice, but most porn is not made from those roots.)

2: I have been told that porn is undeniably demeaning toward women. I simply do not see how this is the case in regards to the whole of pornography. Is pornography also demeaning to men that appear in it? How is just an image of two people fucking demeaning?

Women in porn make more than men.

Who does gay porn exploit?

Probably not, in that most Nobel Prize winners are earning money a different way, but I don't see why, as a whole, they're stupid.

There's often not much talking going on in porn, but when women in porn do talk, they usually strike me as fairly articulate.

Perhaps you find stupid women attractive. I don't.

Do you really believe that actors in porn are not stupid, or is this just the usual ultra PC nonsense about not being allowed to call anyone that?

If it makes you feel better, I could call them intellectually challenged.

Some of them are stupid, sure. But being in pornography doesn't automatically mean that you're stupid. It's like saying models are stupid. Both professions are capable of making large sums of money based off of advertising their 'look'. Some of these people are making good money. Who's stupid here?

seems to me that a woman can choose to be in porn and still be exploited. few porn stars have great career opportunities that they threw over for the joys of fucking for the camera. most women in porn are drug addicts, the victims of sexual abuse or desperate for money.

however i am not in favor of denying women the choice to be in porn. as long as they are adults and free to walk away, it should be legal

some porn is more demeaning than others. if you count nude playboy photos as porn, i wouldnt find that particularly demeaning. a woman paid to have sex with animals on film is demeaned. on the continuum between those 2 things is the grey area of "somewhat demeaning".

yes it demeans men too. the notion that men can never be on the losing end of a heterosexual sex act is wrong.

Having something that you can sell to make money doesn't require intelligence. Wayne Rooney has something that makes him millions, but he's not exactly the sharpest kid on the block.

Admittedly, a general statement is always going to have exceptions. I'm sure there are one or two porn stars that have an IQ above 34.

My point being, is that IQ isn't a factor in producing porn. Willing participants and an eager market are. Sure, you're less likely to find stem cell researchers amongst the porn crowd, but then you are basically saying that anyone who isn't in an intellectual field is 'stupid', which isn't true at all. You might find a genius working in Wal-Mart. You're basically insinuating that the act of being in pornography, translates into instant stupidity.

I believe this stems from the vast amount of porn created where the men are shown as being passivly dominant. Count the number of porn flicks which end with the man ejaculating on the woman's face and you get where this idea comes from.

Not that I don't love porn :D

I do not believe porn is exploitive. We are all big girls and boys and we can make decisions ourselves and are responsible for them. I have friends in the adult industry and they do not feel exploited, rather the other way around. The attitude is "If someone is willing to pay to see me naked, then why not take advantage of that?".

I love the human body, especially women's bodies. We in the US have really got our priorites out of wack when we don't bat an eye if a character on a tv show shoots another with a gun, but heaven forbid you show part of a breast during the Superbowl! We should celebrate the human body, not hide it. I also don't think there is anything sexier than a loving couple having sex for the joy of others. I do find some porn demeaning however. Sites that call thier models 'hos, sluts or bitches are doing a disservice to all women. There is really too much porn that is all about humiliating and disrespecting women, where a women is just an object to be used. But I've also seen many sites where they celebate women and sex, where a woman can smart, sexy, aggressive and in control of her body.

Now I'm totally a believer in the First Admendment and do not believe censorship, but I do believe in the free market and our ability to make changes by choosing where to spend our money (or viewing power).

I don't know. I hear a lot about Cosmo giving women an unrealistic image of the ideal feminine form, but what would happen if more girls saw Playboy's images of women with spread butt cheeks and no asshole? Buns of Steel can't help you on that one.

Dina, didn't House teach you anything?

Foreman: I think your argument is specious.
House: I think your tie is ugly.

Dr. Eric Foreman: You assaulted that man!
