The Voodoo Zombie Good Bands Thread

One of the more...umm...recurring threads on NSG, it's time to recommend your fellow NSers good bands. I will start, in the spirit of the name, by recommending the Voodoo Glow Skulls.

Now for the actual recommendations:

Apocalyptica: Heavy Metal with Cellos.
The Aquabats: Umm...weird and sometimes melodramatic. Listen to The "Baker". You'll get what I mean.
Avenged Sevenfold: Go on, flame me. They still rock.
Dead Kennedys: One of the first hardcore punk bands, as I understand it.
The Flaming Lips: Weird, mellow, and the lead singer sounds stoned. It's great.
Flogging Molly: Rock music. With banjos, bagpipes, and pretty much every other stereotypically annoying folk instrument. It's awesome.
Pink Floyd: Duh.
REM
The Ramones
Robert Plant: I don't really like Led Zeppelin, but his solo stuff's pretty good.
Royal Hunt: Weird combination of heavy metal and classical music. I'm pretty sure one of the instruments used is an electric violin. I did not even know these existed.
Rush
Sonata Arctica: Heavy metal. Really good.
They Might Be Giants

Yarr, the Sex Pistols and Husker Du be good additions to ye olde list, matey.

Beat me to reccomending the Sex Pistols, but I recmomend Sid Vicious' three studio-recorded solo songs. He can't sing for shit, but they're still pretty cool.

As for stuff actually classified by most people as music, The Doors, David bowie and Sham 69. The Doors are just awesome in every way, and the same goes for Bowie. Sham 69, just because it would feel weird only recommending two artists/bands.

I had a list which included Youtube links, but then IE hiccuped and I lost it. So, here's the bands, with the song titles you should search Youtube for:

Stiff Little Fingers (Alternative Ulster)
Isis (Celestial (The Tower))
Pure Reason Revolution (Arrival/The Intention Craft)
The Dresden Dolls (Sing, and Half Jack)
The Postal Service (Such Great Heights)
Hellset Orchestra (Come Into My Lab, He Said)
Oceansize (Ornament/The Last Wrongs)
Youthmovies (...Spooks the Horse (they're otherwise known as YMSS or Youthmovie Soundtrack Strategies)
Twentysixfeet (I don't really know which songs are which, so just search for the band)

And, of course, 65daysofstatic. Retreat! Retreat!, Await Rescue, Aren't We All Running?, Don't Go Down To Sorrow.

Oh man, do have have bands for you all! Great metal bands, from many genres of metal: Viking/folk metal (my personal favorite), black metal, death metal, power metal, erm...hmm...some thrash i suppose...anyways...on to the bands!

Tyr-Viking/Folk Metal (with lots of power metal influence, I would say)
Hammerfall- Powermetal
Blind Guardian- Powermetal
Darkthrone- Old School Black Metal
Amon Amarth- death metal (viking themed though)
Immortal- Black Metal
Bathory- Black metal (early stuff), Viking metal (later stuff)
Ensiferum- viking/folk metal
Finntroll- folk metal
Korpiklaani- folk metal
Forefather- black metal (lots of clean vocals though)
Nirvana- Grunge (everybody should know this)
...I'll add more later...

I've recently 'discovered' a band called Morning Runner. A bit like Coldplay, but more interesting and with more energy. And not fall asleep music. Check out "Have a Good Time", "Burning Benches", "Oceans", and "Be All You Want Me To Be" for an introduction.

Coil: Look for the tracks "Love's Secret Domain" and "Heartworms".

Sisterhood: Look for "Giving Ground" - but, since the only release is a five track EP ("Gift"), just look for that.

Aural Vampire: Look for the track "Darkwave Surfer".

Android Lust: Look for "Refuse" or "Cherished Agony".

VNV Nation: Look for "Soiltary", "Standing" or "Further".

Covenant: Look for "Luminal", "Dead Stars", or "Shelter"

Morning Runner are a great band, "Burning Benches" is a brilliant song.

I recommend Brian Eno, especially his Apollo: Atmospheres & Soundtracks album. Also, Radiohead, Nick Drake, A Tribe Called Quest, The Velvet Underground (you can't have a music thread without them being mentioned), Bob Dylan and The Doors.

I think that most of our punk bases are covered, so I'll sort toss things in at random...

Billy Bragg - Folk/Punk. His early stuff is wonderful, and his later stuff is still good.

ChumbaWamba - Anarcho-Punk/Pop: If you can ignore Tubthumper, the vast majority of their music is both catchy, and very political.

Epica - Power Metal/Epic Metal: Good stuff. Amazing female vocalist. Like Nightwish, only without the suck.

Choking Victim - Harcore Punk: Good, solid hardcore punk.

Phil Ochs - Folk: Wonderful music from the 60's and 70's. Local commies should appreciate him.

Stan Rogers - Folk: Apolitical, but still good.

There. That's a kinda random smattering. I'll throw a more specific list on later, if I get motivated.

Jello Biafra is on the new Revolting Cocks album? Cool.

He's on a couple of tracks, I think - he's the lead on one: "Viagra Culture", which is by far my highpoint for the album.

Gibby Haynes of the Butthole Surfers is quite a major player on this one, too.

Not a bad album, even if it doesn't feel quite like a conventional Revco album.

For shame NSG. I rmember when the Rush/Beatles flamewars used to rage from post 3 ;)

Morning Runner are damn good but I lost the CD from their album *weeps*

The Classic Crime are a new band (not released their album over here yet) but some pretty good emo right there.

Mute Math... I dunno how to describe it and neither do they but pretty lively stuff.

The Hold Steady. 3 damnn good albums. If their sound is familiar it's cause they were part of the original Grunge scene but they were all in different bands that formed together later.

Kamelot - One of the best power metal bands out there. Fantastic clean male vocals and excellent, well written songs that don't all sound the same.
Epica - A metal band that makes good use of a symphony orchestra. Also, the best female vocals in metal. Period.
Theatre of Tragedy - Used to be melodic doom metal, now they are Industrial and have a new singer.
Lacuna Coil - A good alternative/gothic metal band from Italy. Smoking hot singer.
Sonata Arctica - Needs no introduction IMO. Another of the best power metal bands out there.
Within Temptation - Symphonic metal band with a softer side, sometimes almost theatrical.
Tristania - Gothic/Doom metal that makes good use of contrasting grunts and opera.
Blind Guardian - Excellent fantasy/power metal band. Excellent vocals.

Blind Guardian - Excellent fantasy/power metal band. Excellent vocals.

As a natural recommendation following Blind Guardian, I recommend Demons and Wizards, which has both awesome, extremely strong vocals and excellent guitar parts. Much of it has no drumming, the only two permanent members are the lead singer of Blind Guardian and the guitarist of Frozen Earth. One of the few (only?) bands to release an album with much of the music based on a Stephen King series of novels (A great deal of Touched By the Crimson King is based on the Dark Tower series.)

Also, Sisters of Mercy rock.

Corporate Avenger have their moments. Not all their stuff is great, and they are just as likely to show a silly side as any other extremely political band... but they do have some great moments, and give some good insight.

They are pretty good. Think Rage Against the Machine with Native American influences and kind of Ministry-ish vocals.

Try websearching the lyrics to get a feel for what sort of messages they 'preach'... ("Taxes Are Stealing" is another good one). But, there is some real crap in there too, I'm afraid. "FBI File" is paranoid delusion of a Philip K Dick proportion, "Envovled" is just plain silly: "If man had evolved from apes, there would be no more apes..." and "Gay Muslims For Christ" betrays a good title, and some really nice wordplay (I like the word "christinsanianity"), by turning into an NS General type attack on the ebils of Izlamz.

Are these Sex Pistols-esque "Let's piss everyone off" songs, or are these their serious views?

Also, why is it okay to call Christians imbeciles, but not okay to call Muslims imbeciles? Personally, I'm in favor of religious equality in all fields, including ridicule.

I love songs like that! Ever heard "Government Flu" by the Dead Kennedys?

Yeah - but I'm not about to compare Corporate Avenger to the Dead Kennedys. :)

Are these Sex Pistols-esque "Let's piss everyone off" songs, or are these their serious views?

One has to assume (if you look up their lyrics, you'll see what I mean) that they reflect a certain amount of their real views. One of them is Native American, so they do show a definite slant towards a certain perspective, there. It looks like the motivation behind 'Envolved' is simply not wanting to accept that 'Native Americans' may actually just be much earlier settlers. They definitely do have a grudge against Christian expansionism in the New World, and it's legacy... and with good reason.

Also, why is it okay to call Christians imbeciles, but not okay to call Muslims imbeciles? Personally, I'm in favor of religious equality in all fields, including ridicule.

I'm not representing it well. If you are talking about the historical facts of the Spanish settlers in South America, and their genocidal interactions with the natives... or about Manifest Destiny, you have a certain historical background to talk against.

"Gay Muslims for Christ" isn't talking about history, or about being silly - it is a fairly trollish attempt to imply that all Muslims are automatically barbaric genocidal maniacs... the same kind of trolling we see on NSG from time to time. "Bible is Bullshit" is more balanced - it questions the legitimacy behind major 'god-ordained' scripture fairly equally, but with a specific focus on the specific interaction between the Christian expansionists of New World history and the 'natives'. "Gay Muslims for Christ" is just a rant, really.

Matisyahu: A Hasidic Jewish reggae singer. Seriously.
Pillar: They identify as a Christian rock group, but there aren't any religious references there. Just some very good music - "Frontline" in particular, is perfect to listen to while playing a violent video game.

I don't "like reggae". But then, I refuse to believe that any genre can automatically be so uniform that I can write off every single artist and every single track that might, possibly, be attributed to it.

Rap.

I think we can agree that 99% of it is fairly formulaic and predictable.

Perhaps. Of course, 'formulaic and predictable' isn't always bad. But, even though I wouldn't identify myself as a 'rap' fan, I can point to certain things in the genre I like: Eminem - "The Way I Am", Hilltop Hoods - "The Nosebleed Section", Wu-Tang Clan - "C.R.E.A.M.", House of Pain - "Jump Around", DMX - "Who We Be".

Maybe a hardcore rap entusiast would say my tastes were not 'real' rap. I'm okay with that - but, I can find some stuff somewhere in the genre that I appreciate.

Agreed - that was just 'off the top of the head' stuff... I loved the Disposable Heroes version of "California, Uber Alles". I guess stuff like Tricky might count as rap, also... (although I tend to associate him more closely with the 'trip-hop' movement), in which case, there's quite a lot of stuff out there that I like.

I like a band that can make a song whose only lyrics are "New Day Rising" repeated over and over and over and make it a meaningful song.

Yep, but their best stuff (lyrically) were the songs that one would think could only be written by some psychotic nut in a drug-induced haze...

...Like Private Plane, which is one hell of a mind-fucker.

Pretty much every song by them I've ever heard, to be honest.

Could someone recommend me some doom metal? I know Electric Wizard...Well, you could start with the classics: Candlemass, Saint Vitus, and (early) Cathedral. Some newer doom metal to check out would be Yob, Boris (Boris isn't exclusively doom, but they have doom elements sometimes), and Sahg.

Kanabia is a huge fan of doom, so he'd know more, but those ones are some of my favorites.
