The one that's heading straight for the East Coast of the USA? That has already killed a bunch of people in Texas and Kansas because of tornadoes and snow, respectively? Yeah, that one. It's a GIANT storm.
And it's heading straight for NC and Va. And I live in NC, close to the border of VA.
If this were just wind and rain, I wouldn't care. I wouldn't be on NS at almost 3 am scared out of my mind about this thing. Why am I so scared?
The thunderstorms. I, of course, am the town brontophobe. I hate storms-- I've had panic attacks when lightning hits too close or when a storm comes up. As I've said, this thing could be another freaking Hurricane Isabel (like that noreaster around Thanksgiving) without the lightning and I wouldn't care, but it's the lightning I'm afraid of. So now I can't sleep because every newschannel in my area plus the Weather Channel says tomorrow is going to be uber-stormy.
As you can see, I do not deal well with thunderstorm predictions. :(
Now it is like 320 am and I still can't sleep, despite spamming a little bit. :(

Are the thunderstorms that bad!?
Or is it the wind/rain coupled with that? I'd take tropical storm-force over lightning any day.

It's a combination of hail, rain, winds, and lightings that does it. I am really praying that my car doesn't get damaged, if it does, jeez I am going to have a fit.

Check out the TWC site... this has gone through most of the country...

Big storms? We get those all the time.
We got them all the time back in Cincinnati too. As the more or less outermost edge of Tornado Alley, we got some nasty storms every summer. Ahh, can't wait until I move back there...

I love it when it storms here, heavy rain, high winds, sirens blaring, sky darkening...Oh how i wish it would warm up so we can get storms.. its fricking 30 outside, and its the middle of April!

It's 36 here. The coldest of the cold front lies in a big swath from Illinois to Ohio, with Indiana getting it the worst. Oh well, it's supposed to warm up next week...
But I liked the storms too. I'd go outside and watch them approach for as long as I could. Arguably the coolest one was seeing a huge storm approach from the top of the Racer at Kings Island, but our old house back in Cincinnati had a great view of incoming storms as well.

Okay, no, but calm down, Pancake...it's just a huge thunderstorm. They're not that bad, really. I've experienced several back when I lived in Ohio...they were massive, but at most they were fun to watch. Some incredibly loud thunder, though...sounded like freaking dynamite going off. (At least till I'd heard what dynamite explosions actually sound like, then I just considered it to be as loud.)
We've had some neat ones here in Colorado too a couple years ago...hopefully we'll have some soon again instead of more bloody snow.

LOL- that just made me think of Pat Robertson's "God punishes us with tornadoes" tripe. There was actually a thread around here about in my pre-Pancake days... I suppose that if a god does indeed punish mankind with violent storms, then the US must have really pissed it off :(

I <3 hurricanes. They get me out of school for a week and most of the time only do minor damage (that's probably because they're often tropical storms by the time the eyes reach my area, lol).
Hurricanes also very rarely have thunder and lightning, which satisfies the wild-weather mania and appeases the brontophobia. :)

If it helps maybe you can get prepared for the storms better, make yourself a storm box, with a radio, and flashlight, and food and first aide box and an extra battery for your parent's cell phone. Just don't get all OCD about it like I do. ;)

LOL, yeah, it would take a catastrophic event to drive us North Carolinians out. My family hasn't fled a hurricane since 1999 :p We stayed through Isabel. Hurricanes are fun, and the Cat-1's are WAY over-dramatized. But now my area is under a tornado watch, and the tornado warnings keep coming further and further north :(

5 bad ones. They usually come with hail, so they do some damage, but nothing nearly as bad as a tornado. 100km/h max, and rarely. Regular storms happen all the time, and most every building here has a lightning rod.
Yes, shutters are a must around here. Those decorative ones are as useless as curtains lol.
I myself have a bit of a "stormphobia", especially when I lived in Iowa. Somehow, the storms always caught us in the evenings and nights, and every time I would lie in bed thinking about how I wanted my bedroom in the basement. We got a lot of tornadoes in Iowa. There was one time when we were driving literally next to one (not very close, but close enough to have me speechless and immobilized in shock) in the city while it passed through. Fortunately, I've seen enough tornadoes and funnel clouds barely missing the "touchdown" mark by my house, and have now moved to a safer area.:)
But I know how you feel.:(

Here in NC we rarely get hail-- in fact I've been here eight years and it was only last year when we actually got hail, it was the first time I'd seen hail since I'd lived in the UK eight or nine years prior!
The first year I lived here I went to a certain part of the county, and saw two funnel clouds (I was seven at the time). A few years ago (I was probably 11 or 12 at the time) there was a tornado quite close to my house (I have a very funny story about that one).
I actually wasn't afraid of storms until I moved here, perhaps because the storms seemed severe in the woods of North Carolina rather than the cities of Virginia :p. In fact the only time I can recall ever fearing a storm pre-NC was when I was on vacation in Austria or Germany at 5 and in the mountains during a storm. The fear didn't become a phobia till last year when my neighbor's house got hit by lightning :(. I've had a few people tell me to see a counselour for that.
Oh, and BTW, there probably won't be any lightning today, so those arsefaces got me worked up and insomniac over lightning that probably won't come!

We only get funnel clouds here in NC, it's very rare that we get actual tornadoes. The storms do catch us here in the evenings and afternoons most of the time, either that or very early in the morning :(. However there was a tornado in the largest neighborhood of my town where three of my best friends (four at the time, one moved to NY) live, it was setting off smoke alarms and screwing with the power a couple miles away in my neighborhood. However the local news channels only said it was a wind storm-- probably because they're all based in Virginia . It was quite destructive though.

It sounds funny but my mom taught me and my brother very young not to be afraid by making us count slowly between the flash and bang. I don't know that it would work because you're already phobic, but if you hold your breath and count between the two 1) it may slow your heart rate some and 2) it may actually distract you from being afraid.
Just show some caution -- if it's windy, don't go near windows, avoid taking a shower or using the sink if there's lightning.

Oh. You were in Western PA. Ahahaha!!
I hate WPA, and it seems I'm not alone.
We were in mountains so long that people starting saying we'd taken a detour through West Virginia. I highly doubted it though...
But the trip through Maryland wasn't bad at all, and Virginia went smoothly and so did the brief part of NC...

Better they scare us and we're prepared for the worst than they don't and we're trashed.
I live one block away from the water, so I'm a little wary today. They're predicting flooding here, and there would really be nothing I could do about it.
True, but I live in NC, nothing is a threat here. It would take eight Cat-5 hurricanes, a hundred tornadoes, and uber-crazy lightning to get us to think otherwise, so of course nobody in NC really gives a crap except me, but I'm only worried about the lightning. My heels have been tarred enough to the point where hurricanes and tropical storms don't scare me at all.
I don't live extremely close to the water, but my yard is going to be all muddy and watery by Tuesday because of the rain...

Feh, Zeus and me? We're buds. There's no lightning and probably won't be any today... apparently Zeus/Thor/God/Jesus/Allah/Flying Spaghetti Monster/Invisible Pink Unicorn/Tom Cruise decided that my area did nothing to them and decided to leave us alone. :)

There's New Yorkers and Jerseyits to blame, then.
Hey! I wont take that lying down!
And its Noreaster here today. We're afraid for my grandmother's house on Long Beach Island. Noreaster + full moon = really high flooding.

I love rain and thunder. I have a habit of taking long walks when it's really pouring, and the wetter I get, the happier I feel. Last summer was really hot and dry, and I hated it. Of course, even the worst storms over here are not likely to kill you, so I'm not saying that people elsewhere don't have reason to be afraid.

Full moon? It was full moon two weeks ago, I saw it on the trip to Canada...
I'm sure your grandma's house is going to be fine. :fluffle: for luck. :)

Where do you live?
It's the same here now though. The weatherpeople fail, with their ominous predictions of thunder and lightning and hail and tornadoes and doom...

I just went through it. It wasn't really too bad, but I think that was only round one. Things are already getting really windy. But of course, where I live you can have a ten minute storm with 60 mph winds, rain so thick you can't see, huge thunder, and hail, and then ten minutes later it is sunny.
Oh, there was a lightning flash.

Yeah, there is this tree outside my window that is swaying. In my neighborhood, right before huge storms everthing turn quiet, cars don't come down the streets, it stops sprinkling, and all looks to be well. But you can tell by the way there are no birds, and by the swaying of that one tree that things are about to begin.
Oh. The tree stopped swaying. Every thing is still.
The clouds above don't look like rainclouds......

I like watching the storm chaser videos. They always seem pretty safe from our angle, and even though the chasers know which way it's going to go, for the most part, it would still be a rush.
well, when you are filming a tornado a mile wide, whatcha have to understand is the storm isn't limited to that mile.....it's all around it, so you got wind and debris and hail and all sorts of nastiness. Even if you don't get in front of the tornado and are filming it from the back or the side you can still get hit with a baseball sized piece of hail......or a 2x4 (in my case)
But I can understand your hubby not wanting you to continue after getting bonked on the head. lol
haha, yeah, he didn't like it before that, he always said "you are going to get hurt!" and I would say "no, I'm not"
I was so wrong.....
I was putting stuff back into the van and I saw something coming towards me, I was like "what is that?" and then I woke up later in the back of the truck with people trying to shield me from the rain on the way to the emergency room, then I blacked out again.

Me either. My little weather watch OMG Storm warning thing on my pc hasn't gone off either. I did see a bit of a doppler radar showing a storm from the south heading SE. Could've hit my sister tho, on the outer banks, but they've been through much worse.
Last 3 days have been sunny in fact.:)

Yeah-We're having a blizzard here right now-it started 1/2 hr ago and the ground it covered.
Before that we had a solid 24 hrs of rain & sleet & high winds.
The storm knocked the power out at my hosue so I missed my 7am class.
