Well, I'm not religious, but I guess I would give the similar answer that I identify most with people who think like me. Of course, there are different ways in which their opinions and mine can overlap, so I can't really pick a single group.

When you ask what we identify with most, do you mean what group do we feel the most sense of belonging with? Or do you mean what do we feel most comfortable mentioning to describe ourselves to others?

If the first, then, nothing because I do not feel a sense of personal belonging to any group of any kind. I am an individual, self-sufficient and self-defined. Every connection between me and a group is limited and provisional. Even my family has this limitation and the less personal the group, the less sense of connection I feel to it. In truth, there are maybe 5 or 6 people in the whole world to whom I feel a deep and abiding sense of personal connection, yet taken together, we do not form a cohesive group. And those people have little connection to each other beyond knowing me, by the way.

If you meant the second option, then I usually identify myself as a New Yorker, meaning that I was born in New York City and my personality and world view were largely shaped by the culture of that city. But I don't live there now and very possibly never will again, even though a few generations of my family are buried there. However, if people from other places were less quick to identify my accent and my attitude as "New York" I probably would not mention it as a personal identifier. In fact, I'm often not the one to say it at all. It's more like the other person says, "You must be a New Yorker," and I tell them that they are right.

lol. Why is the poll being mutually exclusive ?

There is a concept of multiple identities that the OP is unaware of.

I have a Tamil identity, caste/clan identity, Hindu identity, Indian identity, professional identity etc. I feel no conflict amongst these and quite at home with all of these which make me what I am.

I fail to see why I have to choose one over the other as if they are all mutually exclusive.

Definitely my religion. It's the only group I've ever felt like I belong to. I don't really have a family. I don't feel any sort of connection with my country or ethnicity. Even those meetings I used to go to with a bunch of other rape victims where we'd all talk about our various psychological problems and insecurites, I always felt apart from them.

Did i miss something, or did intelligent lifeforms (that is aliens, and possibly some animals) beat out your sense of identity over humans?

I identify myself as a generalite.

That was Brilliant!

If by identity you mean what labels I would use to describe myself to someone who didn't know me:
First and foremost, my family, so my last name. Sometimes i think of my personality as a peice of a puzzle, just an odd splash of colors and oddly shaped. But my family members are like the other peices of the puzzle, and taken as a whole, we all make more sense.

Then Philadelphia, American, twenty-something, APO brother (almost!!), Catholic, Spammer, and lots more. But those are the important ones.

I tend to identify with people with whom I have common interests, values, education and intelligence. This has nothing to do with nationality (I consider myself a good American while finding that many Americans are anti-intellectual and complacent in their nationalism) or religion (I am non-religious, but I find that I share values with people of many different religions. This is something that exists apart from the superstitious aspects of religion and magical thinking that informs most religions).

Add those who share my political affiliations to the above, and I agree.

Odd that the most controversial collective identity of all was left out - race. One may say ethnicity fills its role, but it still isn't the same thing.

Ethnicity doesn't really mean the same thing, as you pointed out. I do consider race to an artificial creation, as the genetic difference between races is nonexistant. The true point of division is culture, not skin color. And it is difficult to identify with people who are culturally unlike us. For instance, I had a number of co-workers who were Mexican - I liked them, respected their work ethic, and enjoyed their cooking - but aside from work, we had nothing in common - aside from the great tamales and carne asada, I really couldn't identify with them - I had a far easier time identifying with the individuals of Mexican background who had grown up in the "American" culture.

I agree; it's implicit in my pursuit of self-interest, since people with similar political views will help me achieve my goals rather than hinder them.

I'm not going to debate the biological validity of race here (and besides, almost all the sources of identity mentioned are social constructs anyway). You are correct in that culture is perhaps the most powerful source of identity. Yet race is, however, a collective identity many associate with, rightly or wrongly. I just thought it's odd that you excluded it, though it isn't really important. Tribe is a similar enough term to cover it anyway.

I agree; it's implicit in my pursuit of self-interest, since people with similar political views will help me achieve my goals rather than hinder them.
Fair enough.

Family, Ethnicity, Religion and country. From the choices given.

This doesn't mean I put God 3rd. I don't relate God to a religion, neccessarily, but I understand many of my beliefs are part of some religions.. but religion is not God.. So I place it 3rd because I know there are many who I have a common familiarity, belief with, to a certain extent, and that is connected to religion. The word religion is two faced imo, but not at the fault of God, but of man. Religion is bad news. Faith is good news. It's really the only way I can put it. It's a hell of a lot more complicated than that, but there it is.

I identify most with myself tho.

I'm many things. I'm French, a Brit living in France, male, an atheist, a vegetarian, young (25), a teacher (and civil servant), living in an urban context, strongly left-wing... I suppose you could even add that I am tall, somewhat underweight, white, and dark-haired. These are all forms of identification, and commonalities with wider groups (i.e., I'm British, an atheist and a vegetarian as an individual, but these are obviously characteristics I share with many other people). Depending on context, any one (or more) of these can become predominant... particularly if they make me self-consciously part of a minority in any specific situation.
