With the British sailors out, I am going in.

Next Sunday I am leaving for Iran, for a two week visit.

Consequently, I was wondering;

do NSGers have any messages you would like to give me to the Iranian people?
Any tips on what I should visit, while in Iran?

Demand to see the uranium enrichment facility at Natanz. Make sure you are very insistent, and make sure you're talking to a government official.

Tell them the UN will write a letter saying how disappointed they are if they don't let you see the facility.

I have a question you could ask of them; what is the correct reply to the Islamic greeting 'assalamu alaikum' (spelling?).
I'm curious and I've never been able to find the answer.
As for tips, no idea.

Oh, and tell them that I wish them well in the face of the increasing hostility coming from the West, and that should we end up going to war I would feel shameful for our nation resorting to such tactics.

I don't like the Iranian nuclear programme, but I'm certain it could be settled by diplomatic means.

An Iranian serial killer who murdered at least 20 children has been executed in front a large crowd of spectators.

Mohammad Bijeh, 24, dubbed "the Tehran desert vampire" by Iran's press, was flogged 100 times before being hanged.
___________________
So far this year, Iran has executed at least 42 people, according to an AFP tally based on witness and press reports.

In 2004 at least 159 people were executed in the Islamic republic -- the highest rate in the world after China -- according to Amnesty International.

At least one was a minor, the rights group said.

Iran's capital offences include murder, rape, armed robbery, apostasy, blasphemy, serious drug trafficking, repeated sodomy, adultery or prostitution, treason and espionage.

I saw a stellar documentary called "Mystic Iran, the Unseen World" - if I were going to Iran I'd want to dance with the Kurdish Sufis, but they're kind of hard to get to...maybe just visit some of the awesome shrines, the tomb of this Shi'a woman saint comes to mind...oo and definitely go see Persopolis! and try to find a Zoroastrian cave-shrine, they're cool too. tell them some americans think they're cool and that Farsi poetry and Azam Ali both pwn.

Sharia takes the right to privacy more seriously than western law does. they have a hell of a lot more respect for their citizens and more dignity over there - which is part of why it's so harsh, methinks. as a gay man, I sure wouldn't like to live there, but there's a lot we could learn from them.

Explaining the meaning, forces me to be more precise

I used batakatu; which should be barakâtu-hu

The “hu” refers back to (a)llah meaning God

Let me restate the full sentence:

wa ‘alaykumu s-salâm wa rakhmatu-llâh wa barakâtuhu

working translation:

wa: and
‘alaykumu: upon you
(a)s-salâm: the peace
Rakhmatu-llah: the merci of God
Barakâtu-hu: the blessings of “him” (God)

Full translation would be:

And peace, God's merci, and blessings be upon you

Or

And peace, the merci, and blessings God be upon you

Don't do anything that can be construed as "unIslamic".

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/middle_east/6557679.stm

The Iranian Supreme Court has ruled that anyone can kill you if you do so, provided they warn you 2 times. After that, all they need is the suspicion you've done something unIslamic (and there's no trial) and they can take you out and feed your remains to animals.

According to their confessions, the killers put some of their victims in pits and stoned them to death. Others were suffocated. One man was even buried alive while others had their bodies dumped in the desert to be eaten by wild animals.

The accused, who were all members of an Islamic paramilitary force, told the court their understanding of the teachings of one Islamic cleric allowed them to kill immoral people if they had ignored two warnings to stop their bad behaviour.

But there was no judicial process to determine the guilt of the victims in these cases.

The group even killed a young couple they thought were involved in sex outside marriage, but media reports say the couple were either married or engaged to be married.

Lawyers for the victims' families say the Supreme Court has five times overturned the verdict of a lower court that found all the men guilty of murder.

Now the Supreme Court is reported to have acquitted all the killers of the charge of murder on the grounds that their victims were all morally corrupt.
