The date April 12, 1961 is significant because it was when Yuri Gagarin made the first manned space flight. April 12, 1981 is when the Columbia launched for the first time.

Space history is one of my interests, (for obvious reasons). It appears that the 2010's will be the commercial era of space flight, so hopefully something important will happen on April 12, 2011...

WW3 started the first date and ended exactly 20 years later on the second date?

You mean outside of Yuri's little hop and Columbia's jaunt into space?

Well, I do recall Douglas MacArthur turned down the Baseball commissioner's job in '61...

first Vetalia in space, huh?
good luck with that. hopefully you'll see me up there too.

oh, and yes it is the anniversary of Yuri's flight and first Shuttle launch (no coincidence there either - NASA deliberately chose that date)

well done all

Norman Invasion and Battle of Gettysburg?

Gotta love sarcasm when it comes to history

And yes, it was the first in space flights.

Wait a minute - when did the Normans invade outer space? I must have missed that one.

Ah, that explains it. I wasn't born yet in 1961, and when I was in high school in the 1980s, my history books all stopped with the Eisenhower administration. So 1961 lies in that unknowable limbo between "history" and "current events". :D
