Just state which side of the political spectrum you are. If in doubt I'll try to fish up some sort of test for people to take to find out what side of the spectrum they're on.

I think of myself as a centre-right moderate. I don't think of myself as 'right-wing' per se, although many might think I am, since I'm not afraid to vote for a right-wing party as an alternative to a 'centrist' party.

I may even vote for the lefty party next time around. We'll just have to see what happens when the name-calling starts.

Alright, here's the problem: There are many levels to politics.

A person could be a social liberal, but an economic conservative, and a libertarian. A person could be a social conservative, but economic liberal, as well as an autoritarian.

And any mix in various degrees.

Honestly, politics is not as black and white as some Americans would like to believe.

I can see it now:

Do you support gay marriage?

Yes: Moral Conservative
No: Immoral Liberal

Do you support high taxes to pay for government funding?

Yes: Honest Conservative
No: Thieving liberal

Do you like President Bush?

Yes: Good Conservative
No: Evil Liberal

Etc. and so forth.

That's a good point. Economically to some degree. I'm sort of a old school economic conservative, complete with protectionist policies. It works well with socialism at times.

I'm in no way a social conservative. Ick.

What does it matter which wing someone is? It's pointless since people may lie in a poll and will otherwise jerk you around when it becomes obvious you're fishing for dirt so you know who to piss off.

I prefer to keep people like that guessing.

I would have liked to have seen a Jean Charest PC party back in the day before he left for Quebec politics. I also would have like to have seen a Belinda Stronach led Conservative party, but even with her at the helm, it would still be the Reform party with a flashy dressing leader.

I am very left of standard American politics.

I'm an anarcho-capitalist, so I'm kind of a square peg going into a round hole. However, since my focus is upon subsidiary institutions such as the family, church, and community taking over from the government, as well as an emphasis on laissez-faire capitalism, I suppose I'll bill myself as right-wing.

Ugh Stronach...'hey, I'm a gorgeous millionaire! Elect me, elect me!'. Bleh.

See now, I'd be worried if you were claiming to support the Reform, or the Alliance or whatever the frick it's called. Harper's little minions.

I lost any respect I had for Stronach when she flipped after running for the leadership of the party. But she comes from a political family, and has the business background to boot. She would have been a progressive influence in an otherwise hick-heavy party.

But yeah, there was too much celeb in her game. And in other places.

I've never voted Reform/Alliance. But I saw the necessity of 'uniting the right', since although I'm more ideologically liberal than conservative, I don't think it's particularly healthy having the same party running the country continuously. It's bad for our complexion.

Thus, my urgent desire for democratic reform. See?

I think it's pretty clear that many of my views are to the right of many others here.
But "Right" can be a shifting sand. I would consider myself a conservative in the classic mould - small government, self reliance.

13-04-2007, 08:22
I didn't vote in the poll because I'm not sure whether I'm leftist or centrist. I'm socially liberal to such an extent that even most liberals would think I'm a nut, but on economic issues, I'm a pragmatist. I believe capitalism is better than socialism from an ethical standpoint (I disagree with forced wealth distribution) but at the same time, I can't delude myself into believing that charity alone will keep the poor on their feet. And so I tolerate socialism with the belief that it's a necessary evil.

Right wingers aren't conservatives except when one uses the inadequate political spectrum.

I'm a conservative communist. I am therefore left-wing despite being conservative.

Tsk, tsk young lady.
