Sperm is not XY. Sperm (and eggs, for that matter) contain one half of each chromosome pair. the XX or XY pair determine gender, since sperm contains HALF of each chromosome pair, and men have an XY pair, a spermatazoa has either a Y, or an X. The egg, which has half of each pair from the woman, has only an X, ever, as the mother has a pair of XX, half of it will always give an X.

So yeah, sperm is not XY, it's X or Y, since it gets half of the chromosomes from the male, copying either his X or his Y.

From my understanding you would take the sperm from one female and then merge that with the egg of another female. Hardly inbreeding.

I support manipulating the human body on a fundamental level, but there's a difference between manipulating and altering it for good things like enhancement or treating disease and altering the gender makeup...that's pretty bizarre, just like genetically manipulating people to eliminate homosexuality or certain races. I mean, there's a very good reason why we have male and female, and why they are genetically unique; getting rid of one gender would probably be highly undesirable from a biological standpoint regardless of our knowledge of genetics. There just wouldn't be the opportunities for beneficial mutation or recombination, to say nothing of all the cultural aspects destroyed because of it.

Of course, I'll just avoid the whole problem with cybernetics. I'm not physically male if I'm artificial, and I imagine I could keep things like blood and semen samples hidden just in case somebody accidentally wipes out all the human males.

I support manipulating the human body on a fundamental level, but there's a difference between manipulating and altering it for good things like enhancement or treating disease and altering the gender makeup...that's pretty bizarre, just like genetically manipulating people to eliminate homosexuality or certain races. I mean, there's a very good reason why we have male and female, and why they are genetically unique; getting rid of one gender would probably be highly undesirable from a biological standpoint regardless of our knowledge of genetics. There just wouldn't be the opportunities for beneficial mutation or recombination, to say nothing of all the cultural aspects destroyed because of it.

I agree with you with regards to treating diseases and stuff like that. What I mean by "fundamental" is a change that would alter the extreme basics of the human body- like how many fingers we're supposed to have, the different genders, etc. There would be support for being able to restore a heart to functionality- there probably wouldn't be support for a third leg or an eleventh toe.

Now, if you wanted an artificial third leg or something like that, go ahead, but if you're messing with human physiology at the genetic level to do that, that's a bit of a problem because you have no idea what that might end up doing to that person or the kind of long-term damage it might inflict.

I'm as optimistic as anyone when it comes to our ability to understand and shape human genetics, but evolution selected this humanoid structure as the best for its environment and it would be foolish to tamper with evolutionarily determined genes to alter it.

Well, it shouldn't be done unless it's been looked in to thoroughly. If rigorous testing and evidence prove it to be safe, I would have no problem with it, but only if it had been investigated thoroughly to prevent any genetic risks from that method of artificial reproduction.
