What say you?

No. There are already too many badly run nations represented at the UN general assembly already. We can do without another one.

If they want to be independent, fine, but I don't see the point in recognizing them.

Definitely. The place isn't actually badly run, and the people there enjoy much better conditions than in the rest of Somalia.

There's little point in trying to uphold a reality that doesn't exist anymore. If other countries get a UN representation, then Somaliland should too. They could take Somalia's place...it's not like there's anyone in charge there anyways.

Give it enough time and the UN General Assembly will be packed to the brim with representatives from "The Independent Republic of Himself".... all five billion of them.

Compared to some of the "badly-run" countries already represented in the UN it's unfair not to. It is effectively and independent country anyway, recognising it would just stop somalia terrorising it quite as much.

So called "badly-run" countries could include many in the western, so-called civilised, world. Some of the most powerful voices in the UN are those who ignore its rulings the most.

So it is fine to recognize US puppet governments such as the one in Somalia now, or the US-paid warlords that murdered and pillaged, but it isn't fine to recognize an Islamic State?

To be fair, no one else recognizes Somaliland. Also, we don't recognize it because we want a unified Somalia.

The Islamic Court movement did a pretty good job by any standards in unifying the capital and much of the country itself, if the US wanted a united Somalia they wouldn't have supported the brutal warlordism and sectarianism that divided the country, they wouldn't have supported the Ethiopian annexation either.

Ethiopia didn't annex anything.

See, if you really, really don't like the US, your powers of projection are awesome. Anyone who stands against someone who at some point was criticised by the US leadership is automatically evil and needs to be burnt at the stake.

That being said, I'm not a fan of the Ethiopian government myself.

Nor am I, but they are an improvement over the Derg.

They seem to be doing a better job of running their patch better than Somalia is, so why not?

I'd recognise anybody who wants to secede from that hellhole.

Ah. A seceded state from Somalia. I say they should get it, in case it actually proves to have any use in the future.

Because it is a reality, and not to recognize reality is, by definition, insanity.
