(I couldn't really find any really good links)

Apparently, kids at public schools around the country were using Google Image Search to look up porn. Since the schools were to lazy or stupid to install any kind of protection software, or something like that, they simply banned Google Images in school.

At my school (I won't disclose the location) they've even gone far enough as to ban Google entirely, not just the image search. I've found out several loopholes around that ban, but still, I mean, BANNING GOOGLE? Just buy or download for free software to install on the school server. If you're really that desperate for money, share the software across the community. Banning google, even if a few students looked up porn, will only lower grades, increase rebellious thoughts in students, and just make life harder for students. I mean, I know that I use Google to put in a finishing touch on a project at least several times a week.

Thoughts?

well:

1) there is really no way to block the images on Google, sites have to be naughty listed first and with a search engine that rapidly searches new sites everyday this is impossible

2) hopefully this will lead to Google doing something about the disturbing images that come out of ordinary searches

3) you seem awfully emotional about this don't you :p ;)

4) if schools can't guarantee that kids won't see bad stuff on the internets parents won't let there kids use it in school and so we find ourselves with those annoying people who constantly ask for help installing windows

5) I don't think I use Google for anything but porn :(

Because porn sites are blocked, so you use google images as a workaround.

The only way I can think of would take too much effort and time. Then again any real solution would take more time than any public school would employ.

My school has cameras, microphones, and an assortment of other gadgets set in the most unusual places.

Well, if you have a laptop (from the school) say and you go in a corner with a low desk, and then your back to the corner, you can look up porn with no one seeing you. I admit, I don't see why they would do that.

And it's not really for that, but simply now that Google is gone, I have to search for actual information to school on other search engines, that in the past, haven't proved as reliable as Google has. And Google is generally more awesome.

I've seen it done. I've gone down the list of recent searches on the Google site, and there were names of celebrities, sex, etc. It was kind of sickening that it was being done at school under every teacher's nose. And just the prinicple in itself.

No offense to all the pr0n addicts out there... :p

As does any search engine, or at least the ones I've tried so far. Google just happens to be the most popular search engine around, so sites that want to pay so that their information is on the first or second pages, will usually pay Google, and only later think about Yahoo or AOL, etc.

I find that most of the crap sites don't start until the 2-3rd pages, usually. If I don't find a good source in the first two or three pages, I reword my search a couple times. If that fails, I try wikipedia. If that fails, I usually do a little book search in the public library near me. I usually get what I'm looking for by then.

But yeah, what kind of moron looks at porn in school?

You know, I don't think this is about the porn, I think it's part of the war on the internet and electronic entertainment. All of which is fought under the banner of "protecting children," slowly they make inroads on the internet, getting laws in place that allow them a little more control, then they just spring the trap shut and the only thing that comes through the internet is stuff that's been approved by a fundementalist panel. Sadly, it's only a matter of time before the internet is just like tv, overregulated and policed by uptight, overprotective mothers and fathers that don't get laid enough. All the content reduced to only that which is fit for children, and therefore totally unwatchable. Just wait until the Obscenity Purges of 2012.

you don't pay to get on a google search unless you do pay per click, those are in that little blue shaded area near the top of the page. Everything else is based on relevance, people who know how to make their page relevant are at the top of google's results.

If you look up "failure" on Google, an account of President Bush is on the first page. Obviously, the site had to pay Google to get their site on the first page, just for kicks and laughs.

The first 1-2 pages, sometimes more depending on the search, are most likely at least a little bit paying to Google so that their sites are shown first and foremost.

Google also makes most of its money primarily from ads. It is very beneficial to post ads on Google as people will come across them more easily. I often wondered how Google became so rich - it's not because they were a search engine (although indirectly it did, because it was visited so often) it's because it's an ad company.

While I think it is stupid I dont really blame the network admins, do you know the cost of something that would actually determine a the content of an image that is hosted on google?

Not many school districts have the cash to do a selective filter like that and not many have the skill to hand write something that WOULD do that

Depending on how they do roaming profiles (if they do) it is a bit more interesting then that to get the cookie to roam correctly and not be over wrote by the profile owner

I agree that is more ideal but touchy like I said depending on the profile type and how they travel.

Because GPO gets tricky when you try to apply what would be a domain level policy and have a single exception within that file

The reason I brought up roaming is that is the way workstations go these days more often then not, and more then likely what the school will have to work with.

But enforcing a locally locked down individual file in what is otherwise a roaming folder is a recipe for glitches

It is possible, we have done some things like that in the past here (not the filtering part but other static mixed with roaming) but weirdness kept mangling students profiles to the point of a 5% + reset rate a simester

Either way I sure as hell would not want to be the tech supporting that, there are better (though more expensive) ways to filter a lot of that unwanted content but it is hit or miss with proxy'd images

Networks don't tend to work very well if they are constantly haveing to upload gigabyte-sized files for students.

Hmm... well not system is going to 100% secure, and I find to be foolish to prevent the bulk of students from using a valuable research tool just to prevent a few trouble makers from uploading porn.

That brings up another point. Why not just ban specific students caught accessing pornsites from using google rather than the entire student body? And turn on safesearch as well so it is very unlikely a student will stumble upon a porn site by 'accident'. If one student gets really devious you could just either a ban them from accessing the internet at all, or delete their account full stop.

And turn on safesearch as well so it is very unlikely a student will stumble upon a porn site by 'accident'. If one student gets really devious you could just either a ban them from accessing the internet at all, or delete their account full stop.

I agree, I guess I am just trying to correct the misconception that it is something that can be done at the system administrator level. In my experience it is far more likely some stupid directive passed down from school board level and about the only way they could reliably do it while complying with the directive.

So a bunch of idiots are stupid enough to abuse a tool, which then has to be banned by most schools offering under age kids internet access. And you are mad at the people having to do the blocking?

Yeah indeed, I mean, you can of course ban all traffic and destroy all roads to stop drunk driving, but it is just over the top and simply stupid!

But even so people seem mad at the cops doing the blocking rather then the city or state making the decision to need to stop all drunk driving

But the way google images caches the images it makes it almost impossible to filter without blocking the site in its entirety.

You are right there are other places they could go but they got to start somewhere if it is required from above.

Sooo what if it's impossible to filter without blocking the site entirerly? Don't block it all all then since it's hardly a serious issue in schools.

Did you by you last sentence imply that they should block other sites to? First start off with google, then take on altavista, then yahoo , after yahoo msn...

:fluffle:Sorry, was that toll or troll? I mean r is quite an easy letter to miss.

Anyway, sorry, but a toll is a toll, and a roll is a roll, and if I don't get no tolls, then I don't eat no rolls. Free cookie for anyone who gets the reference.

Wow. Attentive faculty there. At one of the schools I went to, kids looked up porn during study hall. While the computer was facing the teacher.

I am not making this up.
