500 Terror Attacks in EU in 2006 - But Only 1 by Islamists

There were almost 500 acts of terrorism across the European Union in 2006 -- but only one, the foiled suitcase bomb plot in Germany, was related to Islamist terror, a new EU report reveals. Meanwhile the trial of one of the main suspects in the German plot has been adjourned in Lebanon.

Report: 706 terror-related EU arrests in 2006
Half of the offenses involved threats from Islamic extremists, Europol says

BRUSSELS, Belgium - More than 700 people were arrested across the European Union for terrorism-related offenses in 2006, and half of those arrests involved threats from Islamic extremists, a European-wide law enforcement organization said Tuesday.

Full report is here (http://www.europol.europa.eu/index.asp?page=news&news=pr070410.htm).

Apart from the interesting difference in how this report is being talked about by these two news sources...I think it's good to keep things in perspective sometimes.

Terrorism isn't a huge threat to us. It is a threat in the middle east and in poorer countries, I grant that. But on the whole, I just don't think this problem warrants massive changes to law enforcement or the erosion of civil liberties.

That article is confused.

It states only one attacked linked to Islamic extremists...yet in the article is this...

However, Islamist attacks such as the German plot and the foiled airplane mass bomb attacks in the United Kingdom were aimed at mass casualities, the report points out.

Bad journalist...bad bad bad journalist.

I think it's interesting, and it also shows that fighting terrorists with police and law enforcement rather than soldiers is actually working to make the european community safe.

And both perspectives are important ones :)

Actually, it's right on the money.

...the bombings in London were in 2005. There were only one case in 2006, and that was the suitcase one. See?

well... the liquid terror wasen't a real plot. It's obviously scientifaclly impossible, and is reall just made up by the US and UK to have an excuse to start the war on moisture.
