The Jeb Bush College of Education

Remember that University of Florida department faculty that refused to grant governor Jeb Bush an honorary degree? Well, the Republican state legislature has responded...

Upset by this lack of Jeb Bush adoration, the conservative-controlled House Schools & Learning Council voted yesterday to force the university to rename its education school the "Jeb Bush College of Education."

Over the faculty’s opposition, the school will now have "to erect 'suitable markers' noting the college’s new name and include the revised name in all university documents, including catalogues and brochures." The lawmakers acknowledge they "came up with the idea as an answer" to the faculty’s denial of Bush’s honorary degree.

Is this "story" available on any news sources? I checked the BBC, CNN, and Fox News and didn't see it. I also checked the University of Florida's website and didn't see it there. I also called the Florida House Schools & Learning Council (long distance from CT), and they referred me to House Bill 621 (the blog on the Orlando Sentinel also mentioned HB 621). I checked HB 621, and didn't see anywhere in the bill's text or staff analysis where Jeb Bush's name is even mentioned. Since
CS/SB 1160 is a related bill, I checked that as well, and again, there is no mention of Jeb Bush's name.

For all of you who do not live in the State of Florida, before you jump on the “I hate Jeb Bush because I hate his brother bandwagon,” you probably should look into what he did for the state in terms of education. He was quite the proponent of furthering education, something his predecessor failed to address. While you all might hate the whole voucher system, or No Child Left Behind, both programs have drastically advanced the state of education in Florida.

Bush put accountability on the schools, teachers, and administrators, and the result has been a substantial increase in the literacy, test scores, and over all education levels in the state.

Furthermore, he revoked affirmative action for all state universities. I know many people who would have easily been allowed into Miami, or the University of Florida but were denied due to their test scores rather than the fact they might be a 16h Native American or another minority.

Say what you want about the man’s brother, but as a governor, Bush brought in an incredible period of prosperity for the State of Florida, in terms of education, tourism, etc etc. He did his job extremely well, and deserves this honor.

I live in Florida, and I work in the education system. Fuck Jeb Bush. He was nothing but a bitch to us, and I applauded when UF told him to jam the idea for an honorary degree, even though I don't work for UF. He subverted the will of the people when it came to K-12 education as well, refusing to fund the class size legislation that passed overwhelmingly via referendum, and he screwed over the smaller universities in the state as well. And if UF, who received the lion's share of state funding, didn't like him, you can imagine how the rest of us feel about him.

As far as the rest of the job he did as governor is concerned--he got lucky and rode a real estate bubble for the last five years, a bubble that's bursting now under the weight of overpriced real estate, high property taxes, and unreal property insurance rates. If you want to blow Jeb!, go somewhere else to do it.

After watching the archive footage for the 10th (HB 621 starts at approximately 2 hours 12 minutes into the meeting), I will agree that there were 2 amendments to HB 621 brought up at the meeting. The first was for naming a building after Ronald Reagan (suggested by the school that would be affected by the amendment), and the second was the amendment that would name the College of Education after Jeb Bush.

It passed the commitee with 13 affirmative votes, 0 negative votes, and 2 people not there. The breakdown was 8 republicans and 5 democrats. Keep in mind though, that even though the House Schools & Learning Council voted in favor of HB 621 (with its amendments), this issue still has to go to the full legislature (according to the person I spoke to on the phone at the House Schools & Learning Council) to get voted on.

He was constantly fucking with our overall funding--and with pay raises for both staff and faculty. And he was especially screwing small universities when it came to Masters and PhD level programs. That's an integral part of how universities not only gain reputation, but gain alumni who then contribute to their alma maters. Small universities already have a tough time with fundraising without the governor and his task forces telling small universities "you don't need that many masters programs" or "you should be an education institution, not a research institution." Jeb was no friend of higher education in Florida, and that's why the UF Faculty Senate took the very unusual step of saying no to an honorary degree.

I guess it's a Bush family tradition to have physical monuments to their monumental incompetence. First it's Dear Leader Dubya with the Presidential Library at SMU which will celebrate his decisive war presidency, and now it's Jeb's turn. He of the 2000 Election debacle, and producer/director of Dawn of the BrainDead (aka the Terri Schiavo brouhaha.) Wonder if the Bush Twins will get a shrine if and when they fuck up just as big as Daddy and Uncle Jeb.

"This amendment may demonstrate to some folks around the state and around the country that the office of the governor of Florida is a very prestigious and honorable office and is certainly deserving of an honorary degree," Rivera said.

"Some may take it as a message," he added. "But more importantly it's an appropriate recognition of a distinguished governor's accomplishments in the field of education."

Surely that should be up to the university to decide? And they did. 38-28.

Also. I didn't think upon reading the thread title that "Jeb Bush College of Education" was going to be anything other than a joke about stupid politicians. I just can't take that name seriously. Especially the "of Education" at the end. It just sounds like a joke. It is a joke. But I'm not laughing.
