I've always believed that polygamy was a bad idea, largely on my experience that it's hard enough to make one woman happy.

Trying to make multiple women happy, and insist that you're "in charge" strikes me as an impossibility (or suicidal, or both).

They bit part of his nose off for suggesting that he get a third wife.
