On April 9, 2007 there was a United Nations believe-it-or-not moment extraordinaire. At the same time that Iran’s President Ahmadinejad declared his country was now capable of industrial-scale uranium enrichment, the U.N. reelected Iran as a vice chairman of the U.N. Disarmament Commission.
Yes Ripley, the very U.N. body charged with promoting nuclear nonproliferation installed in a senior position the state that the Security Council recently declared violated its nonproliferation resolutions.
So in Iran at the Natanz nuclear facility Ahmadinejad gloated: “With great pride, I announce as of today our dear country is among the countries of the world that produces nuclear fuel on an industrial scale.” And in New York, courtesy of his U.N. platform, Iranian Disarmament Vice-Chairman Seyed Mohammad Ali Robatjazi railed against “noncompliance with the NPT [nuclear nonproliferation treaty] by the United States” and “the Zionist lobby.”
I guess it makes about as much sense as any of the other nuclear powers being in such a senior position - it's just that the irony is glaring.

The point of being an NPT signee is to be allowed to employ nuclear power for commercial purposes ;) The irony is therefor not that glaring...

Not really. When one looks at how well signees stuck to the NPT for the past few decades, Iran is definately at the top of the class.
Not that it is a good class... failing all would not be unreasonable.

Wait a min!
Irony? It is not Irony if the participants notice it yeah? It is only Ironic if they don't notcie it, but others do? Thats right innit?

Really? Looks like they're intentionally failing the class now.

What the Iranians are doing now is perfectly legal by the NPT. Though there is the increasing chance that they will go off into nuclear weapons paths the reason why is because U.K (backup) and U.S.A in the region over the past four years or so have now made it clear that Iran most likely will not be safe until it has a nuclear weapon (case in point NK). So whilst it most likely would not have tried very hard to develop weapons beforehand (as their convential systems would have provided sufficient deterrent against anyone in the region) they will now have a much greater need of the deterrent.
I thought it was the UN's job to be funny. And now you tell me it's unintentional?

Well, I take it as a general rule that the UN is a fuckup from the first words in their Charter.
But apparently, we're supposed to take it seriously.

The UN is a fantastic idea. Unfortunately they forgot the bit where they actually needed to give it power to do something.
So it can be completely ignored without repercussions. :(

The UN didn't appoint Iran onto the disarmament commission: it's member states did.

As it stands now the UN does not have enough clout to be considered a further echelon of government. It is more a forum for existing nations to be able to focusbetter on collaboration than just by using relatively limited discussions and whilst it is then useful to bring up point by weaker nations (though they still have very little time) it is not so useful in forcing changes on the member nations.
It needs some reform to either function better as a stabiliser or as a better discussion platform.
