DRM-Free

Many of us despise DRM because it's the symbol of the stupidity of the RIAA and the attempt to limit what we can do with the music we buy legally, whether it is playing the MP3 on a player of our choice, burning ourselves a back-up copy, or just ripping a CD to our harddrives so we don't have to wear out the disk from over usage...

What many people don't know is that there are still Compact Discs (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Compact_disc) (CDs) that are DRM-free that exist.

How do you know where to find them? It's quite simple. Just look for this trademark logo...

http://true-audio.com/upload/8/8f/CDlogo.png

Discs that have that logo conform to the standards to allow for it to bear that image. That logo on a CD means that it can be played on any CD player and is not limited, nor does it have any form of copy-control on it.

CDs that lack it, don't conform to that standard and hence, won't play on all media.

The concept of DRM is not a modern 21st century concept. Back when CDs first came out (the development began in 1979), some record companies wanted to put copy-protection on the discs, but they wouldn't have been allowed to call the discs CDs because it the discs wouldn't be playable on all CD player platforms.

And you know your burnable/blank CDs?

There is a tax levied on them that goes to the music recording industry despite that the disks won't necessarily be used to copy music. The disks are used also for data storage, which has nothing to do with music. So, everytime you burn a CD, you're putting money into their pocket by not burning music.

Now you know.

Now you know. Why would you ever need it on a disk of all things? I have it on my HDD, my flash drive and my iPod. How many backups do you think I need?

it depends on what kind of work you are doing. I have backups of my files on my server, on my tape drives, and also, I have to keep them on CD.

Or if you're like me, you need the back ups because you can never remember if you have duplicates of that file on your extra HDD or on that other partition... and then invariably delete it. It helps to negate the numerous explicitive-deleted that would inevitably follow. :D

There are tons of unDRMed music on the net. Even for free. Think of Magnatune.com or Jamendo.com ...

I think you're confusing copy protection with DRM, Kryozerkia.

Although I just had a look at a few recent CDs I've bought and none of them had the CD:DA logo. I didn't realise it was that widespread... Not that it's done them any good; not met a CD I can't rip yet. Obviously my drives have sturdy firmware in them.

They all ripped painlessly, as did my Family Guy DVD's (so I could watch them while playing Diablo).

|Yep yep, call me old fashioned if ya like, but most of my music I listen to at home, on my stereo. If I want some music on my mp3 player, why then I take the CD to the 'puter, copy in to a certian folder, cut and paste from there to my MP3 player, then delete the contnts of my folder.

Backup? I got the disks man.

alternatively, download your music for fee as mp3s, buy a cable to connect your computer or mp3 player to your stereo, connect said appliances, turn up to 11, enjoy free and loud music at near-as-dammit the same quality as CDs :D.

or, if you want a 'proper' musical experience get your tunes on vinyl.

Ummm now let it be said that I was never one to let a freebie go by with out haveing a grab at it. But art in all of it's forms does have a creator, and that creator has normaly poured every once of sweat into the creation, I just can't bring meself to then take that and not give summit back.

In short, what CD's I don't burn a copy of I buy from the music shop(remember them?):D

well yeh, most of my music is on CD (c.400 CDs now and it still doesn't seem like enough :-D, i have about half that again copied or downloaded), and music shopping is the only kind of shopping i like, but i rarely listen to CDs anymore. the first thing i do after i buy a CD is copy it onto my mp3 player (after i listen to the thing in its entirety) cuz i really like listening to my complete collection on random shuffle.

Money is useful only insofar as it can be used to get something else. As a uni student, money is an end to itself. The prospect of having $4.50 in my bank account makes me giddy. However, that almost never happens.

exactly. its not like i *want* to do anything 'illegal' with the music. i just want to be able to play it when i'm not connected to the internet, burn CD compilations of the music i paid for to play in my car, and play my music on the mp3 player of my choosing. that's pretty much it (apart from streaming it to my xbox360/hi-fi)
