Are you an outcast?

Zilam

Well, do you consider yourself to be an outcast? If so, why?

I think that here in America, I am an outcast, mainly because of my opposition to the military, national security, among other things. I posted my thoughts on another forum, which is run by a newspaper back home, and i was called a tool, terrorist supporter, unpatriotic, liberal scumbag, and someone ever referred to me in a sarcastic manner as the Wizard of Western. They accused me of all this crap, saying I hated freedom, and then I posted quotes from our forefathers discussing a standing military as a threat and so forth, and it pretty much shut them up. But its safe to say, if my true identity was to be found out, I'm sure i'd have an angry mob outside my house ready to lynch me, or at least to egg me.:p

Not in the manner you describe. Most people are either unaware of or simply don't care about my political leanings.

Socially, however, i've always been a bit (ok, more than a bit) of an outcast.

And on here a bit too, maybe.

Never meant to make your daughter cry

...crap. Alright, socially I don't mix well with other people, mostly due to a simple difference in interests and tastes. Not an outcast, necessarily, just out of place.

Politically, I exercise the wisdom of the the great Mark Twain, as seen in my sig. Where I live, I disagree with most people most things, or at least on the issues that get an immediate emotional reaction, like abortion and gay marriage.

More or less someone posted something about 9-11 and terrorism and how the war in Iraq was justifiable, then i said it wasn't and they flamed me, so then I explained my position, and gave them some quotes like "If tyranny should come to this land, it will be in the guise of fighting a foreign enemy"(or however it goes) and this dude said i misunderstood the quotes. How is that hard to understand? More or less I am not patriotic, because as a Christian I can justify supporting a group that goes around killing people, and doing so "because they are told to". I value the right to think for myself, and above all else, I value human life. And then I went on to say that 3000 dead in 9-11 was a drop in the bucket compared to things we have done as a nation, or the lack of doing in trying to stop the deaths of other people. Someone did chime in by agreeing with me on the point in not doing anything about the genocide in Rwanda, Sudan, and the conflict in the Congo. But after that it was back to flaming me as a some sort of ungrateful pussy liberal. I love how mature and grown up these adults are!

Well, I might not agree with you on all of that, but it's certainly not worth flaming you over.

I might discuss the idea of the 9/11 dead being "our dead" and the dead in Rwanda, Sudan, and the Congo being "someone else's dead". It may not be the way you think about it (and it has nothing to do with patriotism), but a lot of people in this world think of their own country, etc., first.

Oh, and Iraq has nothing to do with 9/11 - just so you're straight on that one. Here's a question - do you think it was ok to invade Afghanistan in retaliation for 9/11?

I am also an outcast in the local homeschool community, because I don't have the same "homeschool values" as the rest of them, and it causes a lot of butting heads, mostly because they take political and social positions I find idiotic, and the fact that I have an entirely different approach to education and parenting than they do.

Should try that in the next storm. :)

It actually has worked before, now that I think of it-- about a year ago I was riding the bus home, and the bus had just left the middle school and a storm was coming up-- it looked ugly, but wasn't really bad. Anyway I looked back to see if lightning would strike aroudn the school (you now, like in those horro/Dracula movies or something ;)). It didn't, but it would have been so cool.

When I walk down the street in my doc martens, braces, scrawled on teeshirts, leather jacket covered in patches and badges, padlock around my neck, etc, etc I certainly get a few funny looks, it can't be denied. But would I say I'm an outsider because of that? A lot of people consider me an outsider in appearances but I never really notice it.

I feel more of an outsider due to my politics but I think people realise that less. It gets a bit annoying being a token communist, hearing the same arguments over and over again ("Human nature!" "Only in theory!" "Look at Russia!") and to be honest I often feel like people react in quite a hostile way without realising it. I cant be arsed to explain. A bit stoned. Talking to a girl. Ah, but the camps where they were trained were in Afghanistan.
The leaders of the group that sent them were in Afghanistan.
The leaders of Afghanistan were closely allied to that group, and refused to hand them over.

But, if you're against the use of any military force, what do you do when people attack your country?

Nothing? Talk?

By the time 9/11 took place, I think that with a certain specific group of people (members of al-Q), we were way past the talking stage - they just wanted to kill us - they didn't really care who or how many or in what way - as long as they got to kill us in some spectacular public way.

I am an outcast insofar as no one who matters actually hates me, but those who matter don't understand me. I go to a school dominated be eco-friendly future engineering majors who really don't understand that I don't like math or science, and that I love politics. That's fine, I'm not too fond of popular culture or the psuedo-bachanale that is teenage interaction, and I don't understand why they don't find politics to be truly fascinating.

However, most of my peers are perfectly willing to tolerate me, and more often than not, the ones with a political agenda (that would be most. Even the conservatives at our school are worried about global warming) are willing to ask for information, so I can't complain too much. Besides, if they understood me, then I'd have to understand them.

Of course you must be right... addressing any of their published demands such as the removal of US bases in Saudi Arabia would have had no effect whatsoever and not averted the escalation that resulted in 9/11...

We've long since moved our bases out of Saudi, and they didn't so much as acknowledge it.

Egg, eh?
That's so two days ago.
