Godless N Korean commies ate my monster rabbits
Mystery surrounds fate of giant German bunnies

The German breeder who sold 12 German Gray Giant rabbits to North Korea believes the planned breeding programme may have been canned after communist officials tucked into the oversized bunnies.

German pensioner Karl Szmolinsky was approached back in January by the North Korean embassy in Berlin after "attracting attention for breeding his country's largest rabbit". Szmolinsky subsequently supplied eight females and four males at £60 a head which were packed off to North Korea. Szmolinsky explained: "They want to boost meat production. They've arranged for me to go to Pyongyang in April to advise them on setting up a breeding farm."

However, Szmolinsky says the trip has now been cancelled, and suspects "it may be because communist officials have eaten the rabbits", according to The Telegraph. He admitted: "That's an assumption, not an assertion. But they're not getting any more. I think the animals aren't alive any more. I was due to go and inspect the animals and look at the facility. They kept delaying the trip. I would have liked to go."

Stressing his unilateral rabbit export embargo, Szmolinsky added: "North Korea won't be getting anything from me any more, they shouldn't even bother asking."

The North Korean embassy in Berlin has denied the rabbit feast claim. A spokesman said: "The rabbits aren't intended to be eaten, they are for breeding purposes."

A fully-fattened German Gray Giant can provide up to 15lb of meat - much-needed protein for a famine-stricken land. The Telegraph did spot one potentially fatal flaw in the breeding masterplan, though: since the monster rabbits are "voracious eaters", just how did the Pyongyang authorities intend to feed the beasts? ®

Since the start of that I always wondered "How is sending rabbits to a famine-stricken country going to help with the famine?"

If they don't even have the vegetables to feed themselves, there's no way they can feed the rabbits.

I can see if they were planning to raise rabbits as food-maybe they have plenty of grass/clover for the rabbits to eat, then they eat the rabbits.

But-they ate the initial stock?

Pellets I imagine. Rabbits don't have to eat what we eat, but we feed Flopsy that becuase he's around and we know he'll like it. If it costs less to feed a giant bunny pellets until it's slaughterable then it does to grow an equivelant amount of food they're in the shade.

I don't know if this is the case. Giant bunny man thinks so, guy in article speculates not. I don't know what everything would cost, so I'm not going to say one way or the other.

And no one should be shocked-its bad judgement that got them in the position they are in today.

No, but ostriches convert feed into meat more efficiently then other meat-producing animals. It's all about efficiency.

If North Korea needs lots of cheap food, I suggest the following steps:

1) Adopt capitalism
2) Grow rice

In that order.

I don't see how switching to growing cash-crops for export will feed North Koreans, capitalism doesn't help poor people. Maybe their foreign bosses will be oh so generous to feed them? More likely they'll just invest elsewhere if the Koreans are too expensive.

North Korea's corrupt, self-serving government is the problem, even if they sold the entire country to capitalist investors poor North Koreans' bellies would be empty. Letting the people on the bottom decide where the food goes will ensure most of it goes to the people on the bottom. As long as Kim Jong Il and his ruling elite decide it will continue to go to them.

Potatoes, ratites and democratic distribution will feed far more North Koreans then capitalist ideology and rice.

Err... you do know pellets don't grow on magic trees, right? Pellets are about 70% some sort of grain.[1 (http://www.rabbit.org/journal/3-4/pellet-info.html)] That means the rabbits are eating food that could feed people.

You overlook another difference Western Europe, the US and Canada have over those countries. Unions and a welfare state. Not the mandatory government controlled unions of the Soviet Bloc that exist to tell the workers 'what they want' rather ones controlled by largely by their members. These union demanded higher wages for their members, as a result even ununionized worker's wages were forced up. Further by electing social democrats to their government welfare states were established, giving more universal healthcare coverage and better access to education.

Cuban working people tend to have slightly higher standards of living then other Caribbean working people, largely because of their better access to health care and education. Cuba's no socialist paradise, but it is worth keeping in mind.

Democracy and freedom of assembly leading to adoption of mild socialist reforms are what have improved the conditions of working peoples in the democratic part of the world, not capitalism.
