Hangover Question

I was at a wedding over the weekend, and an after party, that resulted in a significant amount of alcohol consumption. I sincerely doubt it was the most alcohol I've ever had, but it was a hell of a lot.

Yesterday I spent most of the day with a headache and a queasy feeling in my stomach. I figured I'd sleep it off and it would go away, but while the queasy feeling has, the headache remains.

Am I still somehow hungover two days after the party? Is that even possible? Or is my headache likely unrelated.

you could just be normally ill. to little sleep, drinking stuff that's basically poison ... it's not good for your body.
one thing you can do is eating a lot of honey and fruits. they contain a lot of fructose (and other healthy stuff) wich is good when you have a hangover because it helps to produce NAD+. that's a very important coenzyme wich is alos used to metabolize alcohol, that's why your body is short on NAD+. i don't know if it really helps, but it was a professor who told me that (and he looked like somebody who had consumed way to much alcohol in his life) so i guess it's true. (also note that i wasn't paying a lot of attention when they were teaching about NAD+)
another thing you should do is drinking a lot of water, getting enough sleep and maybe take a pain-killer.

Yes it is possible.
Don't mix the champagne and too much of anything else, for one.
Also, next time it seems likely, make sure you're halfway sober before going to sleep, after drinking some water and definitely some orange juice. Walk a little too. Some alcohol won't leave you with any hangover but the best way to ensure a hangover is to mix your liquors.

Fruit, water and Excedrin.

As time wears on, you might introduce coffee into the mix as well.

Thanks guys. The water is definitely helping, but I won't be able to have much of anything else until after class.

To prevent hangovers, food eaten while drinking helps to absorb the alcohol to a certain degree.

Yeah....in the past,I have had hang-overs that lasted two days, maybe even into the third. One memorable occaision was after drinking an entire fifth of rum and several beers in a very short period of time. Too much, two quick. I was still drunk the next day.

sipping a Coke can also help settle your guts and treat the dehydration.

Water, water, water. You are probably dehydrated.

C'mon, gatorade. Gatorade actually has electrolytes in it.

the caffeine in coke might help his headache for a bit, but it's eventually going to dehydrate him further, a cup or two of electrolyte solution will go a long way at solving the underlying problem, and the headache will go away once that's gone.

Good to see I'm not the only one who has experienced this. I had a large amount of mixed drinks over the course of about 3 hours before passing out in my hotel room. Mostly screwdrivers/rums and coke.

I hate the taste of Gatorade. I'm going to drink some coke and balance it out with more water.

The water alone seems to be doing a good job.

caffine and sugar are both diuretics. In other words, Coke (and all sodas) will only dehydrate you further and prolong or worsen the hangover.

Drink water, gatorade, powerade, that kinda thing. Maybe vitamin water. Have a banana. Eat something light, like eggs or a bagel. Maybe take a vitamin tablet

The bottle of rum I drank started off as a Rum & Coke- a really strong one.

Yeah-I was in bad shape for a few days. And I made a real mess.

I've drank so much a couple times I felt the effects 3 to 4 days after the fact. Its normal, you'll shake it off in a couple days.

Yes, it's very possible.

After drinking a pint of vodka and 6 tins of lager, as well as a bottle of pretty strong (14.5ish%) red wine, all within 2 hours, I went to sleep and woke up with what can only be described as the grandmother of all hangovers, which lasted for 3 days. Ugh.

2 Screwdrivers
3 Rums and coke (one of which was a 151 and coke)
1 glass of Johnny Walker Black Label
1 Corona
1 glass of red wine (probably Cabernet Sovignon, but I wasn't paying attention to the bottle)
1 Manhattan
2 Brass Monkeys (equal parts vodka and coconut rum + orange juice)
1 Kamikaze

So really, not that much.

This is also one of the unfortunate problems with me not blacking out, ever. I always remember exactly what I had the night before

lol, i had funny situation recently, went to a party, all very nice, just a few pints (ok 5) then came my mates round, and he has a fondness for Jack Daniels and procured several of these which we drank... what follows is pretty hazy, apparently i took out about 3 tables falling over ended up getting chucked out, i got a lift home and slept.

No headache, just quesy all day and that horrible taste in the mouth that no amount of brusing cured.

I till want to know what i did that night, i have heard several versions all a bit confusing...

another thing you should do is drinking a lot of water, getting enough sleep and maybe take a pain-killer.Ooh, someone else stuck studying the wonders of biochemistry! You're part right, NAD+ is a coenzyme which is involved in the oxidation of ethanol to ethanal as it is reduced to NADH within the enzyme alcohol dehydrogenase. However, it's not broken down, it's merely recycled back to NAD+ in a redox reaction by a separate enzyme (as far as I can tell). The fructose would certainly allow for increased NAD production, as a bit of stereochemical fiddling would let it become ribose, a structural part of NAD. I doubt that increasing the amount of NAD would do much for a hangover. I'd say that ingesting fructose may allow for more important factors, such as depleted glucose levels (leading to fatigue). The lack of glucose, incidentally, is also partly caused by NADH build-up as it indirectly slows a process called gluconeogenesis whereby glucose is produced.

Fruit also compensates for lots of depleted nutrient levels, such as vitamins (especially vitamin C, hence why orange juice is brilliant) and minerals like potassium from bananas. Water should deal with the headache by reducing dehydration - I once read that something like 90% of all headaches are caused purely by mild dehydration, although I'd take that with a pinch of salt as it was merely a throwaway comment by a lecturer. Don't drink caffeine drinks until you've had quite a bit of water, it's a diuretic and will lead to more waterloss.

If the hangover's a real motherfucker, it'll stick around. I've been hungover for 2 days once, I would not recommend it to anyone. Avoid paracetamol (acetaminophen) if you're gonna take painkillers, there's a risk it'll permanently damage your liver. Unless you plan on extending your session, don't use hair of the dog. Really, it feels disgusting and you'll be worse after. Electrolytes, vitamins, water. My personal remedy involves the holy trinity plus an unholy guest - shit, shower, shave and a bit of narcissism, coupled with the others. I'd also mention that I find small volumes are best until the initial nausea has left - fatty food may reduce the nausea or it may make you vomit everywhere.

Wow. Second thread in as many days with a mention of alcohol dehydrogenase. How sad am I :(

EDIT: OK, so wikipedia really does cater for everything (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hang_over) :p
