I've heard that they don't have anywhere near the kind of control they'd like the west to believe they have. *nod*

The biggest improvement in our lives the Internet provides is freedom of expression/speech. These idiots that want to ban sites or certain aspects of the net are on the loosing end of the information battle. It surprises me that Turkey seems to be taking a step backwards.

anyone who attemts to censor the internet is an idiot for 2 reasons:

1) Censorship is wrong

2) The internet is far too large and dynamic for all of a certain website type to be blocked off successfully.

Or maybe Americans aren't so insecure? ;)

I'm quite proud of the UK, although I don't let my pride blind me to our faults. Despite this, I'll cheerfully defend anyone's right to insult or ridicule my country as long as they refrain from inciting violence or stirring up hatred.

Are you telling me that because we're not scared of having our founders insulted, we must be a WORSE country then Turkey? Because we're not insecure about our founding parental units?

No, but it could be if you do it on someone else's property, or with someone elses flag.

Probably their unicameral parliament? I dunno, who keeps the US secular anyways? (as to "what" on both accounts I can safely say, it's their respective Constitutions).

Wait a sec, does the mean they'll censor Monty Python fan sites? (the Eric routine suggests Ataturk had an entire menagerie called Abdul). How sad! An entire nation, deprived of the comic genius that is Monty Python... :(

you' know I once had a friend who was going to move to Turkey thank God shes too lazy :p

Turkey has been on my naughty list for awhile what with the domestic abuse rate through the roof and the idea that homosexuality is a mental illness but this takes the cake, first they start with censoring anti-state sites next its porn then NSG!

Yes, Turkey is in a real pickle. On the one hand, the EU wants Islam's predominance in politics to be subdued. On the other, it believes the military is far too powerful. Too bad that the military is what keeps the country (semi) secular.

ANKARA, Turkey (AP) -- A parliamentary commission approved a proposal Thursday allowing Turkey to block Web sites that are deemed insulting to the founder of modern Turkey, weeks after a Turkish court temporarily barred access to YouTube.

It is illegal in Turkey to talk of breaking up the state or to insult Ataturk, the revered founder of modern Turkey whose image graces every denomination of currency and whose portrait hangs in nearly all government offices.

so....
Atturk was an idiot
and
Long live the break away state of Kurdistan!

Guess NS is banned in turkey in the near future.
Actually come to think of it this forum must be banned in a few countries already....
