Calling on all dorm students!

Assuming your university had a large sum of money, that because of a leadership change had to be spent ... lets say 200 -300 thousand dollars

That HAD to be spent on technology related services for the student in the hall
And preferably (but not required) to be a promotional/flashy service

What would you chose?

Some examples:
Locally hosted game servers for common games
Streaming High Def TV
Streaming campus radio stations
Increased outdoor wireless access

What would you spend that money on?

Should have mentioned (because this is a RL situation) that comes AFTER a complete overhaul to one of the best architecture possible AND a purchase of 30 percent more bandwidth

Porn....lots and lots of porn. Or High Def televisions. Might as well get something all can enjoy.

Actually, our school would give the money to the network admins who would spend what it takes to upgrade everything and then the $300k on a circle-jerk of a committee comprised of themselves in which they research ways to upgrade the network and come to the conclusion that people with real network experience told them should have been done in the first place, then they would be out of money and would have been messing with the original architecture so we would now be broke and networkless.

Increased outdoors wireless support is good. I've heard you grumble about how your current wireless setup is a bitch to setup on XP, fix that that first.

Faster internet connections.

Some kind of mother server where all the college students can dump random porn, and view porn uploaded by other students.

We have by making Enterprise level WPA a broadcast option rather then VPN requiring a client side VPN client

but I like the outdoor wireless myself though we have the problem of frequency ranges ... there are only 3 distinct non overlaping frequency ranges and we have right NOW about 270 Access Points on campus .... adding more might be an issue

First time I read the thread title: Calling on all drum students!
Second time I read the title: Calling on all dork students!

I have nothing further to add, I'm afraid. :p

That sucks that they are so incompetent ... our "Comittie" for the network upgrade was me my boss and the campus side networking guru, we had it hammered out in a day and a half and the purchase orders on our boss's desk two weeks after that (and only because we waited for Cisco to fly a few reps up for consulation and training on the new equipment)
All of us are networking guys it was an awsome project to work on

The only people in our school with real network experience are in the local college sections, not the university wide network.

I know NOTHING about networking. I cannot even setup CUPS FFS!

See it is oposite here (well not compleatly) most of our IT staff (at least the direct technical ones) are AMAZING ... biggest learning experience I have ever had was being paired with thoes guys

The networking degree helped in theory for me to understand some of the larger picture but there is NO practice experience given for what 90 percent of my work in the real world covers

They have one or two amazing guys that had a tone of super advanced configuration courses and such but they were the exception to the rule 1/3 of my degree was statistics strait up

In the end it is good prep work but we would be in sorry condition if they were actually running things lol

Either replace these waterless urinals, or fucking CLEAN them once in a while. Jesus Christ.

And let me have a single room, if you please.

Wireless access for sure. Make sure you can access wirelessly from anywhere in the University grounds.

I voted in my Student Presidential elections for a Polish guy who pledged to increase the strength and reach of our local wireless network.

Ideally, outdoor wireless stuff.

Since I'm in Manchester, one of the wettest cities in England, I'll go for campus radio. But only if it's actually good.

wireless over entire campus
HD cable

in that order

The top one is a 90% sure to happen
Second one is a strong possibility depending on ability to do such (like stated wireless saturation may be an issue)

HD cable is a possibility with things like videofurnace over the Ethernet, under consideration as well

Cool keep the idea's or comments rolling!

Hey, we already have campus radio stations and outdoor wireless access. If they had money to spend, I would have them fix the heaters and if there is money left over, put windows in the school.

If you have ever seen the office in Stranger than Fiction with the little slit windows (ie. riot proof), that is what they are all like. Its hard to see out of them. Not only that, most of them also have so much tinting that when you look out of them, you think "oh crap, its dark already!" until you realize its only 3.00.

Technology? Fuck that. Take out the god damned Asbestos!

Anyway, HD would be good. Sooner or later, HD is going to be the standard. Might as well do it now. Although there is a concern, as of now, that alot of students wouldn't benefit from this.

QFT. (yeah, don't you need a tv thats HD compatable? IMO alot of students in dorms won't have this)

I would actually poll the students and see what they would like.
