Investing in Iraq's Future

Iraq's Dinar has obviously devalued quite severely due to the invasion and the subsequent collapse of the economy. Is there a way that you can take advantage of this situation and at the same time help Iraq? Yes.

Thoughts? Would you ever invest in Iraq?

It seems innocent enough, but in the back of my mind I hear that old alarm going "SCAM SCAM SCAM!"

I'd watch and see what others do with it.

With no apparent end to the occupation in sight this seems like a very risky investment.

It's like betting on the Zimbabwe Dollar because it's got nowhere to go but up.

I would rather put my money in something that at least has a remote chance of ending well.

With Iraq's oil it has to get better sometime. As long as you wait you are almost guaranteed some increase in the future.

I'd invest in Kurdistan, but nowhere else.

Just because there's resource wealth doesn't mean that things will actually work out. Look at Sierra Leone or any given number of other African countries.

I don't know how easy it would be to sell oil on a black market but if you say so. Diamonds on they other hand are very easy.

How can I invest in the terrorists?? Bush policy has enabled them to grow enormously. How can I cash in now, before we elect a sane President?

A short-term investment, at best, and not one I would bet on at all. Too risky. Oil isn't a stable commodity, and it will be a dead market in a decade.

If Iraq does not diversify, the most it can bet on is a decade of prosperity, followed by a terribly destabalizing recession.

Edit: Yeah. That's a scam. It reads like one.

so I'm expected to buy Iraqi money on the whim that:

1) my money won't be rendered worthless in an instant
2) the Dinar is going to go up in value
3) there aren't better things to be investing in
4) I can expect a return in my investment in my lifetime
5) that liberty and currency are somehow connected

no I think I'd be safer putting money under a mattress...in a crack den...thats about to be demolished...that is owned by Spar

Might a free Iraq thrive?
Above and beyond the vast oil reserve, agriculture, and highly educated population, there is now liberty in Iraq. We believe that where liberty is sown, prosperity blooms.

compared to whom exactly?

We are not professional financial consultants or Wall Street gurus. We can't predict the future or offer any investment advice.

But we will bet on Iraq

 on second thought take my money!

I did a thread on this about a year ago. Doesn't seem to have changed much since then. However I do have a lot of the new Dinar. About $500 USD worth. If it goes up then I make a bit of money. If it drops or stays the same then oh well.

The scam with this and others like it are you buying the Dinar at more then market price from them. If you buy it at current rates then it's alright as long as you got that money to burn. If you are looking for a serious investment I would not take this into consideration. I personally am gambling on it going up. I can also afford to gamble the $500 on it. If I loose a bit it's not a big deal to me.

Do you hold the physical notes? And if so where/how did you get them?

Speaking of which, I have a whole bunch of JPII coins from the vatican (not circulated). I am hoping his sainthood comes thru, then those puppies are going straight on ebay.

Me, no but that's because I don't know if it's a scam and I'm not into charity.

Yes I do. I had a Army buddy get them for me while he was in Iraq. That is the best way because it is far cheaper then these scam sites selling them for twice-three times the real value.

Tell you what, you pop along to your financial adviser and tell him/her you're thinking of investing heavily in the Iraqi dinar. Go on - they have a pretty dull job and could probably do with a good laugh. Let us know what they say.

I think this bloke says it best:

Should I point out that Second Life's Linden Dollars -- which DON'T EVEN EXIST IRL -- are over five times as valuable as Iraqi Dinars?

Why not just go to your local Bureau d'Echange, or failing that your local Iraqi Consulate? This site's idea seems to be sound, but they obviously want their own cut, there's no reason why they can't just be cut out though...

It's not so much a cut as a great thick slab:
They are offering to sell D555 for $1, although the exchange rate is somewhere around D1,272 to $1.

Quite steep considering all they've done is put up a pretty website portraying Iraq as some sort of earthly paradise, suggest that you can have a 952 per cent return on your investment, and make proud claims like: 'Back in 2005, The Times of London named us their "Wild Punt of the Week".'

Hmmm... I must rush out and invest my money in this opportunity of a lifetime.

I don't believe you can get them at a exchange. If you could you wouldn't see a proliferation of these sites on the web. Best way is to have someone buy them in Iraq for you.

Nah. Hand out flamethrowers and put people in Iraqi bank vaults. After all, if you burn half of the money, it's worth twice as much - hurrah!
