Well, what do you know...an African government actually can do something right for once.

I object to how mild the punishment for involvement with it is, though...it should be punished much more severely. Nothing like the death penalty of course, since that should also be illegal, but come on...a fine and imprisonment for a short while?

Right next to Ethiopia.

Surely you know where Ethiopia is, right?

No, and while we're at it where is Libya, Egypt, Iraq, and Asia?

It's right above Somalia on the map, unless I'm remebering incorrectly...Eretria would be to its left.

Eritrea is north of Ethiopia. They used to be one nation, IIRC.

That's why I don't know where it is. All my school textbooks were made in 1930 :p

On Africa's night table. ;)

The point is that an African government has finally addressed, in any fashion at all, a major human rights abuse that has been perpetuated under the guise of "tradition." First we may celebrate. Next, we may make book on how long it will take before a violent revolution erupts by factions determined to go on mutilating young girls.

Oh, that's right. That's what I get for not looking at a map of Africa for two years...

Muravyets: Oh I hope that doesn't happen...I'd almost be willing to go and fight on the Ertrian government's behalf if that did.

I also hope it doesn't happen, but it is the great tragedy of Africa that it often does happen. The few governments that have attempted to institute reforms are almost always attacked, with little rhyme or reason about it. Eritrea deserves international support -- including support for security -- for taking this step.

Good for them. Female circumcision is a barbaric and despicable practice.

Yes. Ethiopia and Ertirea joined as a federation, but around 1962-ish, Eritrea became a de facto province.

Why would someone circumcise a female?

Why would someone circumcise a female?

The idea is that by removing the ability to feel sexual pleasure it's supposed to prevent the woman from "straying" or being promiscuous. In other words it's a form of control in cultures where women are seen more as property than the human beings they truly are. Cultures like that do not deserve tolorance, in my mind. Once I was a cultural relavistist, but when it comes to treating women like property to be carved and mutilated cultural relavitism can go fuck itself. In the ear.
