pfff, this comes as a surprise?!

I lived in Geneva for three years, and quite frankly, it's the best place I've ever been to. everythings just... perfect!

although, looking at the chart, the base city was NYC, which is mega awesome too. NYC, geneva and London are my three favourite cities in the worlds

It would be strange if the top cities in the Swiss ranking weren't Swiss and top 50 wasn't dominated by the Western Europe.

No, not cheating. Just that they obviously based it on specifically their system of values.

Have you ever lived in San Francisco? It has the buzz of a world-scale metropolis (It is denser even than Chicago.), but has the political air of Scandinavia, the cuisine and architecture of Paris on steroids, and the generally fun-loving nature of its small nearby neighbor of Santa Cruz, CA. (Aside from that, there would appear to be no adaquate comparisons. Imagine if you crossed the French Quarter of New Orleans with Amsterdam and Lisbon.). I think you'd like it there.

Don't you watch South Park? San Francisco has got WAY too much smug :p

on a serious note it sounds like a really nice place

if you read the page with the statistics it states that the results were based on the feelings of actual residents, not any 'objective' criteria laid out by the researchers. so it isn't biased towards european values at all.

also they make the distinction between quality of living (which they are studying) and qulaity of life which is what you are suggesting has a eurocentric bias.

The Top Cities were either Canadian or Swiss?

Nope. No surprise there. Now if Canada would just hurry up and adopt Switzerlands political model, we can settle once and for all, the supremacy of all things Canadian, and crown Wayne Grektkzy, Wayne I, King of Canada, and the Emperor of All Things Awesome.

You're not going to be able to do that until you adopt California...

I don't doubt it.

The Swiss have built paradise in their mountains.

One thing I don't understand though, if guns are dangerous to society, and swiss people all have guns, then shouldnt their society be in constant peril?

Since guns are dangerous to society, this study must be fictional, and Washington DC must be the best city in the world to live in.

Well, since Gretzky played for LA, it's only fitting that we admit California. I guess that means we need to take NY too, which is fine by me as well.

And Michigan. Cuz' I like Michigan.

A little different though. I believe every male citizen is required to own a weapon, and also serves time in the militia. Not exactly the same thing as anyone having a right to any sort of firearm at the local firearm's store.

Plus, the history of Switzerland is about defending the cantonments from outside aggresion. The US is about rebelling against 'corrupt leaders'. This makes things a little difficult for general administration, since the defenition of corrupt may vary.

But I agree, Switzerland is like the Mecca of Democracy and the model to adopt.

Phh. Gretzky's not playing for the coyotes. He just owns them. Just because we have Tim Hortons creeping up in various states doesn't mean those states belong to us.

(Yet... MWAHAHAHAHA!)

EDIT: Re-read your post. We'll just have to move the Coyotes to another Canadian city and make it 'The Emperor's Team'.

It doesn't surprise me. I visited Zurich before and it struck me as a great place to live. Low crime, great public transport, clean streets, overall great public services, ect. It also doesn't surprise me that London fared so badly. Now I know Zurich might be less 'vibrant' and exciting than a lot of cities, but that usually leads to chaos. Give me a safe place like Zurich over any cities like London and all the crime, gang problems and other social ills that come with them. I've always admired Switzerland and I wish my country could be more like them.

Why does Seattle rank so low? Other than traffic issues, we have little to no crime. cheap electricity, good water, some of the best sanitation in the States, the largest number of highly educated people in the states, and significantly higher-than-average wages.

Well, I settled on Gretzky, since he's universally acknowledged as 'the Great One'. My instinct was to go with Don Cherry, but settled on a less polarizing figure.

I might change my mind to make a Large Double-Double the Emperor of All Things Awesome.

No, no no.

Our monarch is simply a figurehead. Timbit I, King of Canada and Emperor of All Things Awesome will be a benevolent and awe-inspiring leader due to it's lack of offense. It's Royal Highness will rule with sugary greatness.

And we can have a timbit on all of our coins. I think it's the right choice.

I think it's more a question of the society that is dangerous. The guns are simply the tools that give greater leeway for a dangerous society to vent pressure through.

So the US has a more self-destructive society than the Swiss. Not much of a surprise there.

I hate cities. They're all just big trendy zoos for sheep-like people pissing in their urban jungle. Every last city. The bigger, the crappier. And I hate city-loyalty and city-elitism people seem to have. NYC is 4 ever! LA rulez! It's like gang members flashing each other their little gang signs and thinking they're so cool. I despise cities. Cities are what went wrong with humanity. Soon as we had those cities, we started building walls, and then had siege and warfare and raiding, population pressure, pollution, famine, large scale crime. I hate cities.

Not quite. Walls started coming up after people started agriculture. The walls were at first to keep out animals that were stronger, faster and better armed than squishy monkeys with pointy sticks. =p

Siege, warfare and raiding started after that when people figured out that if they had walls, they must have had something worth taking.
