Did anyone ever give it a go? Is it any good?
Cannot think of a name

A friend created an avatar there but as far as I know never went back. I tried but my OS is too out of date.

I was thinking Second Life might be my reply to the "make up a videogame" thread . . .

So if I log on now, I can play without paying a cent?

Yes, you don't pay money unless you want to have game money. I didn't enjoy it too much, it basically is just a virtual world though where you get to meet people and see things though.

Yup, I've got an avatar there. Have had for just a few weeks now.

I don't log in very often, but it's fun. It's a huge world, with many things to explore.

You can travel through stargates that actually work, jump with a parachute from the top of the Eiffel Tower, free-fall from the Earth's orbit... to name only some of the things that I've tried.

Second Life is also attracting a lot of interest. The BBC has an island there, and did a concert there once. (I went to the island; it's deserted now, but still there.) The Swedish government plans on opening an official embassy in Second Life. Reuters has an island there. And three major French political parties have headquarters there to campaign within Second Life in preparation for the upcoming Presidential elections in real life.

Here are a few pictures I've taken of Ségolène Royal's and Nicolas Sarkozy's respective official headquarters in Second Life (with my avatar blanked out):

Royal HQ image 1 (http://img158.imageshack.us/img158/3200/pswb0.jpg)
"Désirs d'avenir" is her official campaign slogan; it means "Desires for the future" and/or "desiring the future". The "vote or die" message is... interesting. I don't know whether it was put there by party members, or by vandals.

Royal HQ image 2 (http://img158.imageshack.us/img158/3505/ps2rb0.jpg)

Royal HQ image 3 (http://img158.imageshack.us/img158/6565/ps3nh8.jpg)
Somebody has vandalised her HQ... That crossed-out symbol is the symbol of her party.

Royal HQ image 4 (http://img158.imageshack.us/img158/8639/ps4uk6.jpg)
Committee meeting room. Where they gather for official meetings on that neet row of chairs, to discuss... whatever it is they discuss in there.

Sarkozy HQ image 1 (http://img158.imageshack.us/img158/82/umplf4.jpg)
A portrait of Sarkozy, with official campaign slogan. "Ensemble, tout devient possible" means "When we're together / united, everything becomes possible".

Sarkozy HQ image 2 (http://img158.imageshack.us/img158/2886/ump2wm6.jpg)
A few faithful supporters gaze at a blank screen, while a large portrait of Sarkozy watches over them. I've blanked out the names. Sarko is using "high tech" in here... even if his island is mostly deserted.

When I read the title I thought this was going to be some insane religious debate about the afterlife.

I haven't heard anything about the game though really.

I've not been very impressed with my first life, so why would I want two?

A couple of pictures (taken by me), to give you a quick glimpse: jumping from the top of the Eiffel Tower:

This life involves flying.

This life involves flying.

I can get simulated flight from many video games that aren't intended to resemble life though.

Yup, I would never do that. But you don't have to. You can create a free account.

If you can already fly, what's the benefit of jumping off the Eiffel Tower?

Because you get a parachute at the top of the Eiffel Tower. And that's fun. :p

You can then keep your parachute and use it for other things. I used it to throw myself off an orbital platform.

Flying is essentially there as a time-saver, so you can move around quickly without having to walk.

Other things you can do (again, my pictures, with my avatar blanked out):

* use a Star Trek transporter that really works (http://img451.imageshack.us/img451/9873/44424140bm0.jpg)
* visit a rather strange version of the Louvre (http://img99.imageshack.us/img99/4171/35873040ux5.jpg). There are a variety of museums in Second Life, ranging from science to art to culture, and from tiny to quite extensive.
* go through a stargate that really works (http://img452.imageshack.us/img452/576/47545139ld1.jpg), after dialing in your destination and witnessing the whoosh effect. (Note, incidentally, that this stargate has only seven chevrons instead of nine.)
* enjoy the scenery (http://img99.imageshack.us/img99/327/17183835yl9.jpg).

Why dont you show us your avatar?

BTW, the graphics suck a lot. Well, it sucks to be a normal person and have never played much more advanced games, they dont know how shitty Second Life looks.

Why is it some people are obsessed with having the most "advanced" graphics? Who the heck cares? I feel rather sorry for anyone who can't see past that.

More to the point, 2L is vast. And a lot of what you see in there is created by users, with whatever skill they happen to have.

Yes, but Second Life is also really, really big and has a lot of stuff in it. Upgrades will undoubtedly improve graphics, but since they probably want to avoid making people pay a significant amount of money for it now, and they want to maximize what you can do in-game, they compensate by providing lower-quality graphics in exchange for being able to do a lot of stuff.

For that matter, scientists working with Boeing and a few other companies have apparently created the most realistic simulated reality to date...this stuff will be making its way to the consumer market in the near future. (especially after neural-interfaces hit the market...that will take gaming to the next level).

It did? I can't remember that, and I usually don't join anything that asks for a lot of personal info.

What did it ask you?

were it not for our lack of broadband we might well and likely be there instead of here, or at least both. although i have scepticesm toward its enshrinment of capitolism. that and its virtual requirement for broadband are the only two shortcommings of it i am sufficiently familiar with.

i DID attempt to participate, even without the neccessary broadband, on my dialup connection. but there really wasn't sufficient bandwidth that way to maintain control of my av, and or, not get timed out.

there are parts and places on there that i have seen and love.

especialy some of the furry areas and the one with the monorail p.r.t. system.

I have an avatar there...and I go every day.

It's not all sex, porn and stuff like that. Sure, it's there if you want it, but you don't HAVE to.

I like going to the dance clubs, because they are usually populated. You can talk to people from all over the world. I like the visual aspect of it. Forum based chatting is good and all, but there's something I like about real time chatting with lots of different people.

If you don't want to pay money in, there's tons of free stuff to be found. It's a great outlet for creativity....everything in the world has been created by the residents. (it's not really a game, as there isn't really a desired outcome, no way to WIN)

I'm a stay at home mom, my husband works nights. So from 7pm until I go to bed, I'm totally alone. SL becomes a means of interaction. It can be whatever you want it to be.

A good friend of mine is opening a business there. You can actually make real US dollars, if you are a creator or business owner. People who design clothes can make a ton of money. You can get a job if you want money. I did that, but it was more hassle than it was worth, so I quit.

It's free to try...and you can do most everything with a free basic account. You can't own land...but, who cares...you can rent a house or apartment, if you want a private place. I haven't gotten any spam from signing up. You don't have to give any credit card info. If you want to, you get 250 Lindens (the currency of SL) they don't bill your account unless you choose that option.

Apparently, there is a person who has amassed over a million US dollars in Real Estate. Colleges like Harvard have a presence there, and conduct classes. Corporations have purchased "islands" where they hold conferences, job fairs and interviews.

Anyway...I like it...but like everything else, it's not everyone's cup of tea.
