Lock Up This Sicko!

XDR-TB patient quarantined (http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/17915965/wid/11915773?GT1=9303) for being "uncooperative." Your thoughts?

I think he should be quarantined. A drug-resistant TB strain is a REAL threat.

Definitely needs to be locked up until such time as he's cured, or dead. If he dies he should be cremated.

IIRC, TB is passed by droplet transmission. If this guy would just wear the freaking mask, the chances of transmission would be tiny. If he won't do even that, then, by all means, lock him up.

Just rip his lungs out and replace them with a new set.. Or is TB nestled deeper than that?

Mmmm . . . a mandated medical procedure might be less invasive than completely losing his freedom . . .

taken away his television, radio, personal phone and computer. His only visitors are masked medical staff members who come in to give him his medication.

I really don't know if I would agree with that. Considering he's just sick, that's excessive.

Quarantining him is one thing. Treating him inhumanely is another altogether... it's been quoted already, but:
He said sheriff’s deputies will not let him take a shower — he cleans himself with wet wipes — and have taken away his television, radio, personal phone and computer.

If they gave me a LCD plasma screen with an Wii, Xbox 360, Playstation 3, an awesome gaming computer with internet, some porn magazines and a plastic doll, I could stay in his place.

Well its for the safety of the public, I must say however that they are dealing with this in a cruel way, maybe if they at least gave him a computer to type last words to friend and family then incinerate him so no germs survive. Then there actions will be justified. It'll be an act of mercy on the man and an attempt to protect the people.

What the hell for?!

Okay, look, the disease is obviously a serious threat and thus SHOULD be contained, but for his sake, treat him humanely! Let him have a computer, a TV, a radio, or whatever. Just make sure he can't spread the disease and its fine. Don't treat him like its his fault for having the damned disease!

Instead of merely tolerating his illness by quarantining him, he should be put to productive use. Namely, he should be shipped to Iran in an effort to create a public health fiasco in the country and destabilize it further. He's a biological weapon, and he should be sent where he's needed.

Trash my other idea, YOUR A GENIOUS! :p

Put him in a germ proofed cell on board a military vessel that is and purposefully enter Iranian waters. And make the cell easy to open from the outside so when their troops take board they will bring him right into their land.

You fool. Don't you realize TB is transmitted through television transmissions, forum posts, and radio waves?

Here's a thought: Maybe they're to cheap to give a dying guy something to entertain himself. They'd have to incinerate pretty much everything he touches, so maybe they're just tightfisted bastards.

While he was being an ignorant dick, they are being dicks. Not allowing him a TV, telephone, or computer? What is he going to do? Transmit TB electronically?

That's actually explainable, barely, but they are obviously stupid so it is far more explainable than the rest of the shit they are pulling.

They should either drop him in enemy territory or incinerate him, that way its either used for good or an act of mercy on the man. Would you really want to waste resources waiting for a doomed man to die especially if its a burden not getting sick from him and all he's going to do is suffer (especially because of the cruelty he's being subjected to) or would you incinerate him thus putting him out of his misery and eliminating the risk of catching any disease from him whatsoever, along with the cruelty "needed" to prevent him from spreading disease if he was left alive?

That, I don't know. Perhaps they are worried about transmission when these things are moved in and out? Masks and such would solve that pretty easily.

Incinerate? That would be an unlikely requirement. TB doesn't pass nearly as easily as some people seem to think it does.

This is sad, but he shouldn't have been a douchebag and just agreed to wear the mask.

As it is, I think they're treating him a bit unfairly. Lock him up, sure, but don't be needlessly cruel. He should get TV (with free cable), a nice computer with games and the internet, free movies and a stereo with free music. He should also have access to any reading material. If he needs to be locked up, he should at least be given the means to entertain himself.

They've got him locked in a single room, so letting him take a shower would probably involve breaking their quarantine and introduce a risk that they (apparently) feel is unnecessary.
Not to say that it isn't dickish, but they've got their reasons. Sort of.

He's still got his genitals, hasn't he?

They'll probably take those next...either that or someone might have to disinfect after each use.

I'm pretty sure that guy has some of these at home.

Also, if they originally were fine with him just wearing the mask, it's not all that horrible. Hey, come on, it isn't the thing you saw in the "Epidemic" movie. That first type of restraint proves he doesn't have to be locked up in an airtight cell, and can at least be let to use the shower and whatever.

Put him in a germ proofed cell on board a military vessel that is and purposefully enter Iranian waters.
Why such hate for Iran?
BTW, it won't work. He isn't a bioweapon, just has a form of TB resistant to currently used drugs.

And...
...The new strain, which has been found throughout the world,... - He isn't unique in having it.

Clearly the guy has to be kept from communicating with the rest of the world, or else he'll be selling goobers on ebay and before you know it there's a queue of coughing nerds wanting their private room with cable and a toilet right there in the room. Could wreck the economy ...

Why the fuck would they be moved out? Until he dies or quarantine ends, there is no reason to move it out and it can be decontaminated once it needs to be removed. My desktop has only ever left my room when I changed houses. Plus, he already has to see people once a day. They are treating him like the worst criminal in history, who also happens to have a dangerous illness. The quarantine is necessary, the denial of any access to the outside world is neither necessary nor warranted. He needs to get a lawyer and take them to court to get back his rights to at least a TV. If I was a lawyer, I'd pull this case up pro-bono.

It would not be hard or unreasonable for them to give him his own shower. If they have to build it where he is being held, or move him to where he will have his own private shower. Taking away the tv, internet and phone makes no sense to me whatsoever.. (unless they were trying to keep him from seeing and or hearing anything about his own case-- not saying that is right, but it's the only reason I can think of as to why they would do that-- you can't transmit tb through a phone, pc or tv-- so you figure it out).

It's a quite fucked up situation. Found a link of the story that goes into more detail (http://duggmirror.com/politics/US_Citizen_Quarantined_For_Life/). Sad.
