The Name-Fuhrer of Sweden

"Sweden's tax agency rejected Michael and Karolina Tomaro's application to name their 6-month-old daughter after the legendary rock band.
In Sweden, parents must get the names of their children approved by the tax authority, which is in charge of the population registry and issues personal identification numbers, similar to Social Security numbers in the United States."

Ordinarily I'm all for the Swedish way of running a country, but this is a bit ridiculous.

Sweden's not the only nation with such laws. France is notorious for similar things.

What about Iron Maiden?
Cannot think of a name
03-04-2007, 20:42
Well...I'll say this...Scandinavians sure do love heavy metal...
It also noted that there already is a woman in Sweden with Metallica as a middle name.
Seriously.
That does seem (I say seem because I don't really know anything about it) like a pretty silly thing to have, an agency that approves names, but in this case they may be helping dodge a bullet...

What about Iron Maiden?
I'd make it a lil' less obvious, and change it to Erin Madden.

Yeah, because if she takes after the band she's named for when she gets older she'll really suck cock.
What about Iron Maiden?
Depends on what kind of guys you want her to date.

In Japan, in 1993, two parents were stopped from naming their chiled Akuma (Japanese for devil). But stopping them from naming her after a rock band? I gotta agree with ya there, man.

I change my mind. My kids' name is going to Megadeth. Megadeth Burgenstein.

Besides, Metallica suck something awful.

The law is quite clear on the subject: Som förnamn får inte godkännas namn som kan väcka anstöt eller kan antas leda till obehag för den som skall bära det eller namn som av någon annan anledning uppenbarligen inte är lämpligt som förnamn.
As first name may not be approved a name which can cause offence or can be assumed to cause discomfort/embarrassment to the person who shall bear it or a name which for some other reason is clearly not suitable as a first name.
"Metallica" falls under the last two rules. Hopefully the appeals court will reject the name as a first name.
Other rules that apply to names in Sweden, especially surnames:
"As newly formed surname may not be approved:
1. a name which through its composition, pronunciation or spelling is unsuitable as a name in this realm
2. a name which is in use as a first name, unless there are special reasons for it being accepted as a newly formed surname
3. a double name
4. a name which could be perceived as a name of a railway station, post office or similar which can cause inconvenience or otherwise mislead the public
5. a name which can be offensive, or
6. a name which can be assumed to cause discomfort/embarrassment to the person who is to bear it"
Also
"As surname, whether it is newly formed or not, may not be approved:
1. a surname that someone else legally bears or is legally entitled to bear
2. a publicly known surname which has been born by an extinct lineage
3. a publicly known foreign surname
4. someone else's artistic name or similar name which is publicly known
5. a title of a foundation, a non-profit organisation or other similar organisation
6. someone else's in the realm protected firm or trademark or other hallmark which has come to be associated with someone else's industrial accomplishment in the realm, or
7. a title of someone else's protected literary or artistic work, if the title is distinctive, or a specially created name that figures in such a work and the use of which would incur a violation of someone else's copyrights to the work."
I have no issue with these rules, as they are quite sensible and serve to protect people, especially children, from stupid naming decisions.

Can you explain these 2 - number 3 seems rather absurd and number 1 seems racist - please note 'seems', hence the request for explanation
I can understand if it applies to someone deciding on the name - fdakjfdh - but why 'in this realm'?

The rule is used primarily to invalidate nonsensical names such as "l<sdfhaspofui", or names whose spelling does not accurately reflect their pronunciation. This is for "newly formed" surnames, i.e. a surnamename that someone already living in the realm (and already has a surnamename) wants to change to. As surnames are passed on, they have stricter rules applied to them than first names.
I can understand if it applies to someone deciding on the name - fdakjfdh - but why 'in this realm'?
Sweden is officially a royal realm, hence many laws refer to the country (officially "Konungariket Sverige") as "riket", which means "realm".

From the BBC article on this:
The name Brfxxccxxmnpcccclllmmnprxvclmnckssqlbb11116 - pronounced Albin - was also rejected by authorities in 1996.
It's not so much the name but the 'pronounced Albin' bit that greatly amuses me.

After sitting down with the Black album and trying to decide how many of the songs I like, how many I hate, and how many were nothing special I decided it was the beginning of their sucktitude.

I was sure of it as soon as it came out. It always irks me to see it hailed as their finest work.

<name rules>
Those rules make sense. Can't be arsed to look for the rules, but we have rules to protect the kids in Switzerland, too. Parents can be so cruel to their kids... I mean, Metallica? Are they aware this girl is going to be in school someday?
As for Kal-El Cage... well, stars have this tendency to find stupid names for their kids. Always gotta be special, eh? And 'normal' people seem to think they have to imitate that... at least with Kal-El, I like the reference ;) Though I wonder how much help this name will be when he'll try to get the licence for his first private jet.

Oh wow, I read the title completely differently. I thought the name they wanted was "Fuhrer of Sweden", which sounded something like what a band would call themselves.
