Kerry: McCain's people approached me about VP spot

I don't generally post blog items here because of the questions of their veracity, but if you follow the link (http://www.mydd.com/story/2007/4/3/11936/97033), you can find audio of Jonathan Singer's interview with John Kerry, and listen to it for yourself.

In the interview, you can hear the following exchange:
Jonathan Singer: There's a story in The Hill, I think on Tuesday, by Bob Cusack on the front page of the paper talking about how John McCain's people -- John Weaver -- had approached Tom Daschle and a New York Congressman, I don't remember his name, about switching parties. And I was wondering if you could talk a little bit about what your discussions were with him in 2004, how far it went, who approached whom... if there was any "there" there.

John Kerry: I don't know all the details of it. I know that Tom, from a conversation with him, was in conversation with a number of Republicans back then. It doesn't surprise me completely because his people similarly approached me to engage in a discussion about his potentially being on the ticket as Vice President. So his people were active -- let's put it that way.

Singer: Okay. And just to confirm, you said it, but this is something they approached you rather than...

Kerry: Absolutely correct. John Weaver of his shop... [JK aswers phone]
Now, McCain supporters will no doubt say that this is a fabrication, that Kerry can't be trusted, that he's out for revenge, blah blah blah. If you don't trust Kerry, I don't imagine that you'll believe him here. But I can't help but think that this sort of story puts the finishing touches on an already floundering campaign---and good riddance, I say.

A McCain/Kerry Ticket, three or four years ago that would of been a good thing. Now it's a sign that McCain is sunk I think.

McCain is toast. With all signs pointing to the fact that he was considering jumping ship, the party faithful are going to sacrifice his ass to their base.

As if anything would get me to vote for McCain. This doesn't impress me at all, it just makes him look weak.

I agree on the good riddance. I frankly can't stand the senile old fart. Especially since every one I come across that has no clue in politics says "McCain would make a good president" They give no reason why, but just say that, and it ticks me off.

A McCain/Kerry ticket would make me sad...neither candidate is any good whatsoever.

Wait, what if I gave you a Klondike bar?

Not in '08, which is great in my opinion. He had his shot against the most inept President ever and couldn't close the deal. There might be second acts in politics, but not for him, I hope.

Nope. But if you gave me one I might grit my teeth and shake his hand though. ;)

But to be fair, the media played the whole "he is weak on defense and counter terror" bit, while we were in the middle of a war. Who would want to hire a president that wouldn't be able to help the troops out during a war? That was the mindset, and even though he did lose, IIRC, it was like 49-51 in terms of percent of votes. That was a close race.

This conversation simply serves to foment McCain's image as a straight shooter. He is willing to ford the turbulent waters of the fast-moving political stream in order to bring Americans together. He puts loyalty to his country above loyalty to his party. He is a courageous man who, unfortunately, is rather artless in the cruel arena of politics. He is naive; he doesn't realize the ramifications of his noble actions. Alas, when he acts to do something for the greater good of the country, he is gruesomely dissected in the media and his presidential aspirations are stifled. Some people may feel that McCain is duplicitous because of this; all it shows, however, is that he is steadfast in his devotion to this grand, old nation, not the grand, old party.

But it shouldn't have been close. Bad media coverage--of which there was plenty--shouldn't have been able to swing it. It was evident to anyone with two neurons to rub together that Bush was beyond bad in 2004, and that Iraq was a fuckup of Greedo-shooting-first proportions, and all Kerry had to do was show that there was enough of a difference between the two to make that evident, and he still couldn't close the deal.

If this actually happens, then it will be official: there is no longer any difference whatsoever between the two major parties.

I used to respect McCain. Now, whenever I think of him, I can't help remembering this old exchange from the Daily Show:

[On the "Straight Talk Express"]

Carell: Alright, it's time for the lightning round! Senator McCain, what's your favorite book?

McCain: "For Whom the Bell Tolls."

Carell: Favorite movie?

McCain: "Viva Zapata!"

Carell: [deadpan] Senator McCain, how do you reconcile your criticism of pork-barrel politics with the fact that while you were chairman of the Commerce Committee, that committee set a record for unauthorized appropriations?

[McCain, speechless, looks like a deer in headlights. Seconds pass... then--]

Carell: [laughing] I'm just kidding! I don't even know what that means!

The man is weak, hypocritical, equivocating, and has abandoned all he once stood for.

Honestly, I have such a serious grudge against the Military Commissions act of 2006 that there's no way I would ever vote for McCain for anything. I had some faith in the man, once, but no longer.
